I can now say I am a member of the Durango HVAC box R&R Job From Hell Club. A huge Thank You Phillip for this video because it served as a guide for a job I never would have tackled otherwise. I'd swapped out engines and transmissions in cars and 4x4's before but those jobs seem like cake compared to this. Now to share a few tips/tricks (in no particular order) that may be of benefit to others: If you install a non-oem evap core you will probably need 2 new bolts. Oem is American standard, aftermarket required metric (6mx50m) + washers. The pipes on the new evap core won't be right so you have to bend them (gently) into position. Where the 2 heater core pipes pass through the firewall is a fragile black plastic vacuum line that's easy to break when pulling HVAC box (which I did!). Thankfully there was enough left to connect an undersized rubber vacuum hose/joint (Oreillys) to to reconnect the 2 halves.) Before you yard out the HVAC box take out the u-shaped metal guard on the transmission hump that protects the air bag inertia thing. That extra inch or so of clearance makes a huge difference. It's probably not necessary to remove the instrument cluster Just disconnect the shift indicator cable from the steering column. (when reinstalling I broke the little white plastic swivel where the cable enters the cluster which cost me time trying to glue it lol and $40 for a replacement off ebay). If you move the driver's seat all the way back the steering wheel will drop to the floor out of the way then disconnect battery. Go with a copper OEM heater core (rockauto) as they will fit correctly and not leak a year from now like the cheap aftermarket aluminum cores. Clean the inside of the HVAC box of all coolant residue especially the foam-covered blend door which is like a stinky sponge. I soaked mine multiple times in warm soapy water (Dawn) and allowed it to air dry in the sun. Mopar may sells these not sure but why spend extra money if you don't have to? One of my foam gaskets from the HVAC box to the dash disintegrated so I make a replacement with adhesive-backed weather stripping. The foam gasket where the heater core pipes pass through the firewall wasn't in too bad a shape but I went ahead and cut a new one using a $5.00 pair of knee pads from Lowes. While I had the HVAC box out I thought it'd be smart to also replace the blower motor assembly but the aftermarket unit I got from Rockauto didn't fit correctly. The motor body was about a 1/4" longer which in turn pinched the wiring behind it. I suppose I could have drilled a new hole for the wiring to pass through but was pissed. I reused old blower motor because if it goes out it can be replaced without pulling dash. I was concerned about the 2 bottles of 'miracle seal' I had earlier dumped in the radiator so I flushed everything out with water the best I could and put in 1 gallon of prestone concentrate and 2 + gallons of 50/'50 mix (that reminds me I need to check it with my gauge before winter hits!) Probably the most maddening part of this job was all the electrical connectors and figuring out how to release then without breaking them. Oh and that damn glove box door! What a micky mouse design. It came out easy enough but getting it back in without snapping any of the plastic hinges? I found online that the trick is to loosen the center of the 3 screws and 'twist' the hinges into place. Take photos of assemblies you may need help remembering how to put back together like the heater/ac controls and label your harnesses to they get fed to the right holes when installing dashboard. Keep your screws and nuts organized. It's summer as I write this but last night it got cool enough (high 50's) to hit the highway with the windows rolled down and all that glorious heat blasting out of the vents was heavenly! All told my out of pocket expenses for this job was well under $300.00 so Phillip you saved me how much by not taking it to a shop? At least a grand I'd say. Would I do it again? My first reaction is HELL NO but I know the 2nd time around it would go easier now that I have the experience.

I came back to this video since the new heater core I put in got chewed by mice causing a leak. Thanks again for making this video it was very helpful. One thing to add is you do not need to disconnect the radio, thermostat controls, gauges, or anything in that front face except for the plastic covers like the 12v cigarette lighter plastic.(That saved me a lot of time) All in all I got it done in just 2 hours the day before work lol

I did this once years ago before KZbin "how to" videos were a thing. Your video helped to make the job more straight forward, this time. One would think that, since they have made cars that didn't require pulling the entire dash to change a heater or evaporator core and since these are jibs that can be expected at least once in a vehicle's life that the designers would do a better job for their customers and maintainers.

Thank you so much for this post! It took me 1.5 hours to get it all apart. Ordering a new E.C. just in case! Only wanted the H.C., but better safe than sorry. I anticipate an additional 2.5 hours for reassembly once my parts get here. This will be due to the process of refitting and double checking everything as I go. FYI for anyone wanting to know, I am replacing the heater core, evap. cooler, A/C seals and gaskets, and the foam ( purchased from home depot door insulation area). Also need a vacuum line patch kit, as I broke one taking the assembly out. It only took a handful of tools, the ones he states in the post. Good Luck all! Thanks again!

I had a leaking heater core in 2000 Durango, passenger floor board was soaked and vapor in the vents. So I did this job, if it wasn’t for waiting for parts I would had finished it in a day, great video. I changed the blower motor and the evaporator since I was in there. It really wasn’t that hard a job as everyone was saying. If I had to do it again I would be done pretty quick. I did break the crankcase breather valve reaching for the transmission line screw, now I know to take it off before I reach down there.

After watching this I’m wondering if I can just get away with trying to flush the evaporator somehow, maybe back pressure it, it doesn’t leak, but may be clogged up. My 2000 Silverado was much easier, I just cut the heater box open with a universal cutting tool, then used Flex seal tape to seal everything up. Still haven’t decided if I’m even gonna try to change it if it’s clogged.

Great Video Phil - Somebody told me the dash had to come out, I can't believe that design. They could have designed it where you take out a few screws on the front of the heater box and exposed all it's guts. Undo a few hose connections on the firewall and you're done. Total douche bag designed that.

I wish I had not dropped my Kodak Camera and broke it, I found something strange, I went out to disconnect the items I seen you disconnect and realized I could pull the Fan Motor front cover off so I wanted to see the Fan Cage etc. I figured no harm in that as it only has, I think 6 or 7 10 MM bolts to pull and to my shock I seen the Motor is bolted to the Housing from the front not the rear as I had read and all have mentioned on the 2000 Durango so I removed the Three 6.5 mm Bolts and if that dang this did not just fall right out, all I had to do was pop the rubber grommet off the wires as well as feed the wire and connecter behind the unit and Poof the Motor was out. I did not remove any of the AC lines, Heater hoses nor pull the dash any further back then I had. I have the new one it Arrived 3 days early from RockAuto, I tested it and OMG I about removed some fingers as the torque ripped it out of my Hand LMAO. I cannot believe how much air the unit moves in the open air I can 0nly imagine how much better the Heater and AC will work now , The old one had to have been running at 1/4 speed all this time. There is a amazing story behind This vehicle and all the repairs I have done to it (when my Neighbors owned it) and how it cost me a whole $0.00 So I have been taking my time just replacing or fixing/cleaning things on it. if you have any idea why I could remove the Heater /AC Motor and Cage wheel without removing the entire unit I would love to know . Could it be a replacement assembly somehow that was upgraded so you did nothave to remove the assemble to replace the fan? I woudl still have to remove it to replace the Heater core or Evaporator just not the fan motor.

@@FixItPhillip Thanks for writing back buddy. I'm in Virginia so that's great. When you get out here let me know. I've been suffering with AC problems for the past two years. Dealers are rip off. You took that dash apart like it was second nature. I was always afraid that they might leave a couple parts missing or lost and not put it back the way it used to be. I want to try to keep my Durango for a couple of more years. It's a 2000. Keep me updated on when you get out this way! Thanks a lot again. I'll leave my email below. If I take it back to Pepboys is there anything they can adjust on the shaft besides trying to charge me for a wheel alignment? I did not have this issue before the steering shaft was replaced. I have new tires from last year and don't want to wear them uneven. Besides the annoyance of trying to keep the steering wheel straight when on long highway drives. I had a couple of appointments I had to get out of the way so I could not take it back the same day. And wanted to give it a chance to drive on level surface also. Appreciate the advice. Facing a core replacement, and watching this, although helpful is disheartening at the same time. That's alot of shit to fight thru and should have been made more simplistic in design. Right now I'm missing my Ranger, a core change in that was 30-45min, and that's stopping periodically to sip on a beer..... Thanks for your time and effort in the video tho.

Hey there I just got done putting everything back together and almost everything worked. I'm having an issue with the face air vents, they don't seem to come on instead it switches to the windshield defroster vents. I was wondering if you have any clue what I could've done wrong and if I'm gonna have to rip that dash off again. Thank you!

I also have an additional problem. The ac doesn't work I replaced the evaporator while I was in there and filled it with some refrigerant. The fill valve was bubbling so that's fun but the compressor also blew the fuse so now I'm wondering if the compressor is bad. But I'm also wondering if my temperature selector is working cause I broke part of the clip for the shift wire when I was re installing it. I'm gonna check tomorrow that was enough for today lol. My Durango has 277k miles btw.

@scottwhitcher265
@scottwhitcher265 Жыл бұрын
At about 13:30 he says "this thing..." that's the connector to the resistor block. You can also reach it from under the cowl vent about in the center, but you cant replace it from there. If I KNEW FOR SURE that the resistor block was the problem, I'd cut a hole in the top of the dash to get at it to avoid all the work to get at it.
