In this video we are looking at the Dodge Intrepid! This was part of the LH platform of sedans with Chrysler's revolutionary 'Cab Forward' design. It lived through 12 model years and 2 generations, and for the most part people were happy with their Intrepid as it provided decent power, good looks, and a spacious interior at a modest price. However, the car did have various issues (2.7L V6 ENGINE!!) and would get replaced after 2004. Watch along for a full history of this car from concept to cancellation!

I have a 2002 Intrepid with 3.5 liter v6, it runs like a dream, and the car is meticulously maintained by me, when you start it up, you can hardly even hear it. It has pure raw power, and the interior is pristine. It’s silver with a trunk wing, aluminum wheels, and is a dream to drive.

They were stylish roomy and comfortable, really good design. The 2.7 was troublesome after 80k miles , but the 3.5 was pretty good, with real low end grunt.

That's it right there. The 2.7 killed this amazing car. My 2000 was a beast, loved the autostick. That is, until it hit 27k miles. Started jumping into limp mode and later shutting off at stops. But i was driving a company car at the time so I had the cam position sensor replaced and parked it until the lease was up. Towed it to the dealer and didn't have to pay that ridiculous repair bill.

sploofmonkey Harsh about the Intrepid. The 300M is a good looking car. The Stealth is a FWD platform though. It would have absolutely been a killer with RWD and any LA V8. It would be the Hemi Cuda of the 90’s. Plus, didn’t the Daytona last into the 90’s?

Right, I find it funny that the Chrysler 300M, Concorde and LHS all scored higher on average for reliability amongst owners, even though they were all practically the same car with the exact same drivetrain offerings. I’ve always thought the higher original price tags of the Chrysler LH cars explains why you still see many more of them on the roads over Intrepids, because people who could afford to purchase them from new generally took better care of them in terms of preventative maintenance.

You've speak of the mediocre performance but you really should emphasize that at this time in the 90s- that was mid pack performance, and not thought of as being an under performer. Back then this was decent for a large car- a 215 hp V6 was at the upper echelon of what was available at the time.

Me and 3 friends rented a new Intrepid around 2002. Base model, 2.7L That car was surprisingly quick, and got great fuel economy. Doing about 80 mph with 4 guys loaded with luggage, got about 29 mpg. On some high speed runs, easily got it up to 115 mph. The 2.7L was a great engine without considering the terrible reliability. Had a 1998 Intrepid ES 3.2 engine and it was a great car, and I loved it except for a few issues. If you still own one of these cars or bought a used one recently it helps when previous owners give you some helpful tips. Issue #1: Hot engine stalls and hard starts. Here's a tip if your 3.2 engine stalls when hot and takes 10 minutes or more before you can restart it....it's not your fuel pump! .... it's the Crankshaft Position Sensor .... so save yourself a lot of pain and money and change your Crankshaft Position Sensor ASAP with a new one and NOT one from a junk yard. Issue #2: Electronic Climate Control module kept failing and the blower would go into high speed which required the replacement of the module (aka HVAC Blower Motor Resistor module). Again, learn from my mistake and only install a new one. Junk yard parts are used and have a limited lifespan and don't always last very long. Issue #3 Inner Tie Rod bushings. These went bad on me 2 times and after a shop replaced them (and screwed it up by not installing the inside washers) I bought the bushing kit and did it myself the right way and the car handled like it was brand new. I bought the car when it was a few years old and owned it for 9 years and have some good memories. It was a great car to drive but not at all designed to be easily worked on.

Shame there aren't more of these around, they'd be nice cars even today (especially for a teenager) if they didn't have the garbage engines in them. Now there's hardly any left. My 02' Honda Accord is a beast reliability wise by comparison. 230k miles and the engine is still going strong, zero oil burning, runs great. I love sedans, I've always thought they were the best style out there. Shame everyone has to buy these ugly, fat, and bubbly SUVs instead of clean, sleek sedans. The SUVs handle like shit compared to a nice sedan too.

Got my first Intrepid in 2011. A 2004 dark red base model with the dreaded 2.7. It had 90000 kms on it and I was lucky it lasted me 7 years and another 90k before the engine gave out. I fell in love with the looks of the 2nd gens back in high school when they hit the streets, and then I saw DMX n Nas rollin smoked out in a green one in the film BELLY. Had to have one. I love big sedans and this is one is so sleek and super roomy. I was not surprised to hear that it has Lamborghini design origins. I loved it so much, last winter I went searchin for another 2nd gen. Found a nice condition 2002 ES, leather package, prem sound system, trac control, 16" chrome five spokes and best of all, the 3.5 under the hood. Had 180000km mostly highway and I got it for $1800 Cdn. Drove it home whizzin past semi trucks, lovin it all the way. Her name is Saskatoon Sandy cause that's where I found her, and she's still goin strong. Peace to all the Intrepid lovers out there. Keep em rollin. Thanks to Marspeed for doing this vid.

I bought a 1995 Intrepid ES fully optioned and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, it needed 6 transmissions in the first 5 years. The last 2 were out of warranty. On the 6th, i accidentally over filled it, well that was the ticket, because it went 200,000 more on that one. I seriously got 300,000 out of that car until i sold it for $500. My family had 4 of these cars over the years. Two 96 Intrepid's both with the 3.5. one lasted till 280,000 miles before the timing belt tensioner went out. The other we bought at auction and was repoed and the oil filter was rusting through, so that one didn't last too long. Had a 98 Concorde with the 3.2 and it was amazing. Purple paint did not hold up though. And last an 03 Concorde with the 3.5 HO. Should never have sold the 03. Miss it still to this day. Way nicer than the 2012 Malibu I drive.

Well done! Thanks for this. I loved my silver 2003 Intrepid. I looked like the future car in those car magazines I saw as a boy in the 60's. Best American aero sedan look ever! My parents even asked "how can you afford this?". I learned about the sludge issue early on and paid to have the engine flushed, then synthetic oil, and another flush 3000 miles later. Two engine flushes done myself - $40. Unfortunately the transmission melted down (repair exceeding the value of the car) at 132K. Moved on to a 2007 Chrysler 300 which I still drive as backup car and love it.

Manuel Topete my cousin had a first-gen Intrepid and the only issue she had with it was sway-bar bushing, but she lived in the mountains then and had a lead foot, so I’m assuming the curves ate them up. I actually saw a 2001 Chrysler Concorde for sale with 336k miles on the odometer in great condition the leather wasn’t torn and the dash wasn’t even cracked it had the 3.2L which if you take care of things and service them the results are obvious.

Chrysler LH platform stands for "Last Hope". I had a 94 Intrepid ES, POS, I leased it, and in that time the catalytic converter went. I took it in for the clacking noise from the engine, dealer told me the valves were fouled and it needed a valve job. When I turned it in at the end of the lease period, I wrote in the owner's manual that this car was POS for future owners. Thankfully as noted in this video, you don't see any on the road vs. a similar vintage Camry or Accord, which are still used as daily drivers. This was the end of the era for the old school "style sells" trade your car in every few years approach by the American auto makers. Not saying they learned their lesson, they have all given up on the car market except for the foreign brands. Thanks for the video!

My dad purchased this car with 80K miles on it from a 99 year old man for $800, my older sister and her moronic boy friend killed the car 18 months later, it then went to the scrap yard where it belonged.

@silverbird58 Blue Devil head gasket sealer actually works pretty good, all I know about that car was that it leaked like a siv and that the 2.7 liter V6 Chrysler put out, was one of the worst engines of all time. Also stay away from any engine that uses a timing chain driven water pump because ALL water pump eventually go bad and this type leaks, or dumps water directly into your engine oil. Who ever came up with that design should be dragged through the streets and strung up like the Italian Partizans did to Mussolini back in 1945.

Our 2000 Intrepid unfortunately had low oil pressure problems with the 2.7l engine, and was also plagued with transmission issues, in spite of meticulous maintenance. We decided to trade it in at 40,000 miles. It was a shame, because it was one of the best driving cars I've ever owned, and was surprisingly sure-footed in the snow. The reliability issues have prevented me from going into another Chrysler dealership for the last 20 years, and I'm sure many other LH platform owners followed suit.

It also had the infamous 2.7L sludge maker engine, although when I totaled it in Feb 2005 at just under 50,000 miles I had no issues or problems at all with the motor. I replaced it with a brand new, never been sold 2004 SXT in Stone white with 16" chrome wheels, 6 cd in dash Infiniti stereo, and the better equipped 3.5L high output engine.
