Dodge Viper RT/10 by Monogram - Episode 39

Today on the WorkBench, I’m building the Dodge Viper RT/10 by Monogram. This is part three of a three part build. This build was inspired by a photo that I had come across on the internet one day. I did one of these in 1969 GM mist green a few weeks ago. I too was surprised at the glueless pieces. Nice job.

Thank You! I believe that shaking up the "norms" of paint color can be fun. The color I chose isn't anywhere near what these vehicles were available in. I imagined what this car looked like in a light shade of green and thought that it would fantastic like that. Thanks for watching!

Try a Viper RT/10 AMT 6808 1/25 it will fit in the Trailer.

This Monogram kit is 1/25 scale. I don't know if the AMT kit would be any smaller. Unless, AMT doesn't know how to convert the measurements that were given to them from Dodge. LOL!

Thank You! There are a couple of Ollie's within a drive from my house. I say drive because it's over 50 miles one way to the two of them I have been to. There's one located in Grand Rapids and one in Bay City, Michigan. There are probably more than those two in the state but I haven't been to them.

Thank you for sharing. For the detail Brush Painting, were the parts Primed? or just painted directly on the plastic?

Thank you for the great question. I prime all parts before applying any top coat on it, especially craft acrylic paint. If you were to put acrylic paint on bare plastic it would easily scratch or rub off. The primer gives the acrylic paint something to hold onto. Thanks for watching!

@@southpaw5483 Way back when I was a young lad, just getting started in the hobby, I never primed anything. That was a time when Testors bottle and spray can paints ruled my model building. I would just apply it straight to the plastic with no thoughts of what it would do to the plastic. Testors paints after all, were formulated for that purpose. Now, 40+ years later, everything has changed. There are a plethora of paints available for use in the hobby. Personally, I have switched over to acrylic craft paints due to the availability of colors, availability and price value. That's not to say that I don't still use Testors enamels, as I still do. Craft paints are not designed to go straight onto styrene plastic. The plastic is to smooth and leaves nothing for the paint to bite into, hence the use of primer. Testors paints can be applied straight to the plastic with nearly zero issues unless you don't clean the body of release agent first. That can lead to bubbling, wrinkling and lifting paint. So, in conclusion, I would say that it is possible to apply Testors enamel straight to the plastic without primer. However, I have also found that applying a coat of primer can illuminate problem areas (i.e. mold separation lines, dimples etc.) otherwise not seen by the naked eye thus giving you a chance to correct the problem before laying down an epic paint job.
