Interesting name Vesper, in Latin it means evening, often referring to late afternoon or evening prayers and again Sylvan of Sylvan Grove, in Latin meaning wood or forest. The only people who used Latin then would have been Doctors, Lawyers or priests, so you can bet your bottom dollar that one of their founders was a Cleric of some kind. The field opposite Hammer Cemetery looked to have a really good crop of barley growing, what a lovely verdant area it is! Loads of ghost towns, what an interesting place, many of the old stone built school rooms look to be of a very similar design, possibly a school blue print at that time. We too get our share of tornadoes and water spouts in the UK but most of the time are nothing other than a talking point, doing little damage at all, but the ones you get are truly awe inspiring and so destructive... I would have been long gone my friend. Loved it John, thank you very much, good effort!

As always, a great video, thanks. I live up in the mountains of far north central WA 20 miles from Canadastan. "Ranch Country". There a couple old boys still around that went to schools that aren't there anymore. Just like the man you met at the school house. I am proud to call some of them my friend. They have such colorful stories to tell to anyone that will take the time to patiently listen. Patience has become my middle name as a result(lol). Nice to see many of the older stone buildings in good repair and still serving its occupants.

@@TravelwithaWiseguy Lol, I'm usually sitting at a table next to them at our local breakfast cafe. At which you will find "the long table". I jokingly call it the "cool kids table". I have found that old ranchers are some of the smartest people there ever was. Coarse now, I am a little bias(lol).

@@asimplehorseman4648 We had four older couples in our neighborhood. And my folks kept track of them and their needs, and send me over to help out with what they needed done. They were all like just additional grandparents to me, and I went over without a second thought to do what needed done. And if course, that couple would invite me in when I was done for fresh cookies or brownies, or even a fresh baked pie. And if course there was fresh milk or home made lemonade. And if course, we would have a wonderful chat while chowing down. Other times I would just stop by and visit. And then there were the times we got together to form a crew to do a job that needed done at someone's farm. Such things as harvesting, or baling, or vaccinating hogs or moving cattle. And there was always a story time connected to those get togethers. Darn it, I miss those days!

Your comment reminded me of a cute abandoned small two story house, just off the road several hundred yards on the east side of highway 14, just about five or six miles south of the Nebraska/Kansas border. Years back, so eone would hang white sheet ghosts in the windows in early October. What a sight it was for the Halloween season. I have some pictures on my digital camera from a motorcycle trip down highway 14 one October. I always thought it a crying shame that the little house was abandoned. It was such a appealing looking little house.

I remembered a time back in Iowa, possibly around the 1980's, when people were exploring old cemeteries. For headstones you couldn't read, they had blank paper and crayons, and would rub the sides of the crayon over the paper as it was laid on the headstone, and it would reveal what had been printed there. Many old cemeteries were mowed and cleaned up during those times. It was nice to see that happen. And it seems that someone has continued to keep many of them up since.

Interesting that this was in my KZbin feed. Visited Beverly many times in the 60's and 70's. Driving there we would always stop at the Tescott cheese factory (in Ottawa County). Hi to any of the George and Florence Dewitt family that see this.

Best tornado I ever saw was 2 football fields in front of me. I was in my car with my little doggie Daisy. It was crossing the road in front of me. It was a huge wedge tornado. This was in northeast Texas. I was on a 2 lane road with no shoulders. We have a lot of big trees here so I couldn’t see the horizon therefore I couldn’t see the tornado until I was almost right on top of it. I stopped when I saw it, took a picture (of course) and then immediately turned around and told Daisy to hang on. I floored it. Pedal to the metal baby. We got the heck outta Dodge!!! I met a storm chaser heading straight towards it. I thought….. well they’re fixing to have an experience. I enjoy all your videos!!! Be safe and I’ve often wondered if you’ve encountered inclement weather on your journeys. It’s been a WILD tornado season!!!

Commendable that the consolidated school in Sylvan Grove names the other communities: Hunter, Vesper, Laray. Seems like there were a plethora of schools in that part of the country. Pioneers took the education of their children seriously it seems. Speaking of serious John, I'm glad you had weather radio. Those gray green skies never bode well. Indeed, it was time to get out of Dodge. Great Series. Loved all the small towns and history you explored in Lincoln county.

Vesper is truly a map dot; nothing wrong at all with these small communities. Just like a lot that you have toured through Texas. Sylvan Grove is the type of community I would easily live in. Where we live is a little bigger, but not much. It is still the typical small town Texas. And keep up the great job. Some of us travel and tour vicariously through your travels.

That was pretty cool you met someone at Margaret, Kansas. That drive to Lone Walnut looked really treacherous, and you found some playground equipment. Good for you! I too was amazed at how many old school buildings you ran across. It would be really cool to map out all those just to see how many there are. Very interesting episodes. Lincoln County seems to have been a very busy place, at one time. With the storms, you could incorporate other weather videos in Kansas as, “ Storm Chasing With a Wise Guy”. It’s got a good sound to it! Just make sure that you have comprehensive insurance to cover hail damage and broken windshields!

very nice county, all of the towns are well kept. I think that shows the towns have pride in their area to keep the past alive while looking to the future. Wonder if the payphone works 📞 Nice, clean, safe comfortable motel, you really don't need much more than that. Great shots of lightning, that green sky and those clouds told an ominous story. The word motel (from a blend of motor and hotel) typically implies a roadside hotel in which the doors of the rooms can be entered from outside. In contrast, hotel rooms are normally entered from inside the building. Motels are often less expensive and have fewer accommodations than hotels. So I would say, that you stayed in a Motel. So the Motel is kind of false advertising, especially to those who just put in "hotel" in the search engine because they don't want to stay at a Motel. I LOVE Murals. Do you have a playlist of just "Murals" on your channel? I know you have one of just water towers.

I'm amazed at the huge size of some of those abandoned farm houses. There was $$$$ in this area at one time. When tornado sirens go off, Kansans head out to the front porch! I wondered what kind of shape your car was in after driving down some of these roads. "The rental car".😆👍

Glad you got to see the restored Sylvan Grove depot! Bashan was listed as Barton Station in my KCC records just a side track, same as Edalgo. Shady Bend had a population of 40 in 1910 and had an open RR station until 1939. Yep that was their old mill, looked pretty inaccessible especially with iffy weather. Quartzite is listed as a side track on the UP apparently to some quarries. Lincoln County must have a decent historical society to mark schools. Nice job! You might call this Travel with a Merry-Go-Round Guy

Sylvan Grove, my uncle owns a house just north of there. Used to stay there to go deer hunting and also pheasant hunting. We stull go out every year. The county has definitely changed since I was kid.

Great history and tremendous pictures, but what, Coach, is Himalayan Cuisine in Lincoln? That floored me. Back in the 80's and 90's Sylvan Grove was an absolute powerhouse in 8 Man football. The stadium is named for their old coach Mike Weatherman. I believe that he coached for 30+ years, he also won state with his girls basketball team.

I would love to know more about the construction of all those stone buildings. I'm sure they used a lot of local labor & equipment, but I bet there were a lot of traveling masons keeping very busy ~100-150 or more years ago with all the small towns that popped up with the homesteading. There's something about quarries that fascinates me. Then to think about all the towns having their population curve ups and downs around the same time frame. Was there a wave of growth from East to West? Probably as the rail lines spread. I wonder what it would be like if we didn't have the dust bowl/depression and WW2 which seem to be the biggest factor in migration to cities.

I’m guessing those buildings were all built from similar plans so yes it would be good work back in the day! The depression and technological advancements in farming hurt populations as well as school consolidation. Fascinating area to explore!

I have family farming there and it's interesting watching you visit some familiar spots, as well as some particularly in the southern half of the County I wasn't so familiar with. If you go back, make sure you catch an evening meal at Flyboy's in Sylvan Grove, not your typical small town Cafe.

Have you heard of Runnymede Ks.? It's on Hwy 2 N.E. of the town of Harper in Harper County. It has a very interesting history. It was an unincorporated township so it might not meet your criteria for inclusion. There's a plaque on Hwy 2 commemorating it's location.
