I saw a comment saying: “I love how he pushes her away and she’s always the one to turn back to him.” But also notice that when she tries to walk away by herself (when she was looking at the other couple) he went to her. He wanted to control and manipulate her more. He didn’t want her to stray away from him. It’s so common in abusive relationships and it’s so well done and incredibly subtle.

this is a painfully accurate representation of abusive relationships. "this is just how we were taught to love" is part of the internal dialogue she goes through, trying to justify why their love is still worth it. the whole setting of the video, pretty much in ruins, represents her mental state. the repetitive move of falling into his arms represents the literal going back to the same person that keeps hurting you over and over again. this is so beautiful and artistic, and the song is brilliant. dodie snapped.
@jaydenisaacs48555 жыл бұрын
Diamondust finally someone says it. It’s 100% about an abusive relationship. Not about so sad short lived love. You can see it all written across how she uses her face to express how she has to pretend to be happy around him while also being sad when she turns away know she can’t really get away until she does. And when she does, he moves onto another girl and she worry’s about her. Which is why she gets so angry in the last shot

@@gweng7033 i saw a video once that analized modern relationships. and how they are so affected by hollowood movies. you know how in movies there is always a huge conflict, emotions just too strong, and that's how the couple knows for certain that they love each other. In this video they would explain that many people have been too affected by this idea and even if they suffer, get stressed, etc in relationship, they think that's the way. And if its everything too ok, if there is no jealousy, no over control, etc, means they don't really love them. So i interpreted it like that. She suffered while being with him, but once she got a little moment to stop and analyze it (1:36) she smiled, she got happy cause all that stress and chaos means he loves her, so she got back to his arms all happy. she looks like relief. like "oh, he DOES love me!"

I like how also at that part she looks slightly out of control and he looks like he's being very forceful while leading the dance.
@PiggyLivi5 жыл бұрын
Here’s my analysis: A girl falls for a boy. She feels like she’s in love, like he loves her. She trusts him and gives herself to him, doing things with him she had never felt comfortable doing with anybody else. When she sees the other couple’s shadows, it’s like she can see that this “dance” is not unique to their relationship, like he could easily have a different partner. Maybe she begins to suspect he will leave her after taking what he wanted. She walks down a sea of men with hers facing the opposite direction. Perhaps he’s different from the other men that have hurt her... She realizes at the end he was never that serious about the relationship. He got what he wanted, and he’s into the next fling. It leaves her feeling like she was used, like she was naive, childish for thinking the love was real. It wasn’t. She should’ve known better.

When she’s looking at the silhouette of the other couple dancing more gracefully, I love that it’s just a silhouette bc it shows how we only see what they want us to see, and we can’t truly understand what another person/couple is going through unless you are that person/couple. Chances are that couple is having problems too, but what dodie sees is a perfect relationship and she doesn’t understand why hers doesn’t look like that too, even though it’s all just a lie. How is it that no one is talking about the line, “You thought you could charm me and damn it, you’re right.”??? Nothing is worse than when people are so manipulative and KNOW what they can do and do it anyway, intentionally. And nothing makes you feel more stupid then when you know what someone is like and what their intentions are and you end up falling anyway. And who is left hurt? You. And the other person doesn’t even have the decency to feel bad because they have already moved on to the next victim. Dodie, you are a goddess of music. Something i noticed near the end where alot of groups were dancing was that 'main guy'+dodie/girl's dance was fast and out of breath, and they wouldn't be able to do that dance for a long period of time, but everyone else's dance was slow, and they would be able to do the same dance for a long time. (idk maybe that was obvious lol) Also Dodie your music is amazing and you are an amazing human!!! Keep doing the things you love most! P.s the video is 👌

to me, this song & mv represent the normalisation of toxic and exhausting relationships. leading to people feeling hurt, but watching the cycle continue with the next one. dodie, having experienced poor relationships in the past, is cautious and self-aware. she has such low self-esteem, that the charm jordan shows is almost like a drug. when you've been belittled so much, a sweet-talking partner teaches you to be dependant on them. mainly through manipulation, you are told you are nothing without them, that no one will find you attractive as THEY do. you feed off that validation, and continuously come back, until one day they aren't there to greet you anymore. throughout the song, dodie glances over at other dancers. on the first watch through i saw this as jealousy or envy. but after a few repeats, i instead thought of it as a comparison. with people posting their relationships on social media, it opens up for a lot of unhealthy comparisons from those watching. "their movements are perfect, why aren't mine like that?" causing self-doubt. of course, she is still enthralled with jordan, but her movements weren't as soft as the silhouetted dancers. of course, they were shadows, because the light would expose them for having problems as well. the bridge, with the accompaniment of the green/turquoise lighting, tells me that dodie has attempted to ground herself. you can see that she is almost alone, until she meets up with jordan once more, and the cycle starts again. "they tell me, "don't go there. we know you love a nightmare. there's more than a crush here. why aim to be crushed here?"" these words are so quiet, and soft. and are then drowned out as dodie talks to jordan, and expresses her guilt for loving the way he makes her feel even with the cliches. and then, dodie falls, being caught and lifted up by jordan. however, jordan holds her by her head, covering her ears. "don't listen to them/they don't know you like i do/ i really do love you." dodie and jordan go off "script," dancing more passionately than the people around them. she's swept off her feet, and now she truly DOES feel different than the other girls. so when she's spun out, she smiles harder than she has every other time. only to find that when she turns around, he's doing the same dance with another. the addition of "guess i'll take it," is even more heartbreaking here.
@strrb85785 жыл бұрын
Good analysis but imo it's just about falling for a fuckboy. She's much more into the relationship than he is. "There's more than a crush here, don't wait to be crushed here" is the line that reveals it the most i think. She's falling for a guy who she knows is a fuckboy and doesn't want love but just sex and will move on to another girl without caring. ---> "I'm just a toy" "You thought you could charm me and damn it you're right" -> fuckboy " Watch me fall for every damn stereotype" -> fuckboy again "There's a name for boys like you" -> fuckboy. Also when she talks about the lines that "shake me up everytime". She's talking about the flirting, and that typical angel attitude of fuckboys.

for me i interpret this song as the short lived happiness when you know a relationship/fling wont last because its meaningless to the other person but it feels like the pain will be lesser than the happiness you get from it in the moment. when you reason with yourself you know that it's a bad idea (oh no, I gotta remember that I'm just a toy,') and that you're just a spur of the moment fling but you can't help up making up excuses and reasons to do it ('[he] can't help it, this is just how we were taught to love.') the whole idea that she's just a 'toy' adds to the image of his self importance as far as feelings are concerned. she's just a passing thought and someone to emotionally play with and when he's done with her she'll be discarded. then in the bridge we hear the internal monologue of reason appear again stronger, 'why aim to be crushed here?'. the play on words surrounding crush is so clever as it references the dual meaning and the two polar opposite aspects of liking someone- fanciful and crushing. in the video she is seen walking against the crowd which might symbolise ignoring advice given to her and what she feels is right to do what she wants to do. the green lighting makes me think of guilt that she's feeling going against what she knows will be best for her in the long run and being reckless. at the end of the bridge we see dodie quite literally fall into her old ways of being swept off her feet by someone she knows doesn't have the capability to love her. i dont know whether ive just completely projected my shit times onto the song so feel free to give me any other interpretations because i find it really interesting the different interpretations people get from the same pieces of music

I was thinking this was kind of about the cliché-ness of love or something? The way that everyone was dancing the exact same way and the same time and then at the end when he finds a new girl to dance with shows how some people do the same lines and gestures in relationships all to get a person to swoon over them when in reality it's not that special. When the lyrics "And yet I feel lucky to hear all your lines,I hate that they shake me up every time" I feel like it reminds me of people who always have a certain "line" or trick to get with people as if they're copying some actor's or book's character and that they would say it to another person? I really liked your interpretation of the monologue, insíghtful

i definitely agree, except during the bridge, i thought it more signified grounding yourself. trying to listen to the people who tell you that you're in a dangerous relationship. the greenish lighting is more refreshing, tranquil and calm, rather than guilty or envious. the people around her have stopped moving, and it's very quiet. she meets with jordan, and then moves away, showing she thinks "they" are right. until she falls, and jordan goes all out to make her feel special, only to do the same dance with another girl.

The choreograph is honestly well thought out. One of my favorite parts is at 2:34 we can see dodie and her partner dancing rather quickly compared to the couples that are dancing in the background. For me at least it resembles how quickly we can get into a relationship and enjoy every second of it until one of the partner decided they’ve gotten bored and just decides on their own to move on, and to do the same dance with a different partner.

I can't help but notice how their dancing gets more aggressive throughout the song and how as time passes, he's controlling more of the motions and forcing her into certain moves rather than her being an equal partner. Like at the beginning his touch with her is gentle and kind of guiding and she's happy, but the the end he's just grabbing her and jostling her around. Then when she turns back to see him dancing with the other girl, they're both smiling, but his touch still looks forceful with her. Like he grabs her arm close to her elbow and pulls her, rather than holding her hand. It makes you wonder if he was always that way with the protagonist and she was just too infatuated too see it at the beginning, but is able to see it when looking in from the outside at the end.

There’s something interesting to the choreo before and after the breakdown. Their dance and the one in the background are near identical before but after they’re is much more active and maybe frantic than those of the ones around them. They still line up occasionally but there’s much more happening in dodie and the boy’s.

Dodie and Jordan have more chemistry the most couples in big-budget movies. When his face tenses at 2:27 and then the look down is just amazing acting. The same goes for dodies reaction at the end. (edit: press 7 whilst watching ;)

The entire team from top to bottom did an absolutely stellar job on this. From the recording of the song to the editing of the video everything has such interconnected emotion and theming. You did a beautiful job on your performance and dancing!!! The transition at 2:34-2:35 took my breath away. The edit is clean and followed the movement so well. The color choices, location, lighting, outfits, and camera movement fit so well with the music and feeling of the song. I just fucking love this and want anyone who had any hand in making this to know that their work is appreciated and adored. Thank you for sharing this!!

This is soooo GOOD!! The song is so addictive and the amount of detail gone into the choreography is amazing! I love the story portrayed here and how toxic relationships can be. Don’t mind me, just gonna do a little analysis haha ;) note: when I say Dodie, I mean the character she plays in the mv :) I like to think the line “this is just how we were taught to love” is highlighted throughout the whole video, where everyone is doing the dancing the same moves suggesting that the way they learned love was very artificial. The fact that Dodie began fighting against this way of loving is represented by her trying to change the dance near the end of the video. As soon as she changes her rhythm and style, she is cast away for another, conveying that the relationship was not real. Another line that I like to think is represented through the dance is “gotta remember that I’m just a toy”. The fact that the man flipped Dodie and is taking much of the initiative shows that he is playing with Dodie’s feelings. The facial expressions are another thing altogether, showing Dodie’s confusion on the validity of their relationship and yet enjoying the struggle, as shown when she smiles whenever she is pushed away. Despite her worries, she is happy to come back and even when she is finally released of this toxic relationship, she can’t help but feel lonely. Sorry for the long comment ‘:) hope this makes sense. Long story short, it is a FANTASTIC VIDEO AND I LOVE IT ❤️😂
