Ok it took me a minute to get the theme of this choreography and stuff but wOA THIS IS COOL. She doesn’t do everything in sync with the other dancers but she’s still a part of it (none of them are actually doing the exact same thing anyway), she tries to walk away sometimes but it always ends up being in the direction the dance is going. *She’s pretending like she’s not part of the dance but she still is.* I also love how all of the dancers are a few feet from each other and have slightly different movements - they all have different lives and stories, and feel isolated from each other, but really they’re going through the same things. Beautiful.

One thing I really appreciate in Dodie's music videos is how she seems so aware of all the women around her and how they're experiencing the same pain she is. Like in 6/10, all the other girls in the room who looked just like her were experiencing the same thing, or in Boys Like You, they were all just caught in the same game she was. And here all the women have the same lonely look on their faces, reminding us that our experiences of pain are shared by many others which is both tragic and beautiful. I feel this song is discussing how women try and play the "cool girl", a mythical fantasy created by men (and named by Amy from Gone Girl, oo, look at that) where a woman is chill, doesn't get "emotional" and is "easy" to date. So many women are performing this role in their relationships, and you can see how lonely it makes them feel. Gah, there's just so much to appreciate. I feel we've really progressed from grouping women against each other with the "she wears short skirts I wear t-shirts" stuff. There is so much empathy for women in Dodie's music and it's so great. I don't know...just wanted to say that. Sorry.
@izzydasilva97034 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you!! Thank you for commenting this! I think a large part of why dodie's music is so comforting to so many people is that it makes everyone feel less alone. It shows us that everyone is going through the same sort of things even though we don't talk about it or necessarily realise it.

3:19 she breaks out of the crowd, looks proud in a childlike way, looking at the person whose approval she is seeking. when the camera zooms out again, i think it symbolized the temporary boost of attention fading, she looks disappointed in that same childlike way, as if subordinate to the person who she chases. when the camera leaves, she falls back into the dances she were trying to escape.

towards the end when she began 'knocking' the other women down, i thought that was really smart. she's acting superior since she's the 'cool girl', she's different as she stood above them all. but then, for a moment, she lies down with them, copying their movements. she's wishing she could be care free like them. whilst they dance in harmony, she's trying to prove herself different. it's like a battle of internalised misogyny for the approval of others. that's my interpretation anyway.

I also think there's an element of putting yourself down or letting yourself be a victim because you've put others down and you feel guilty. To me it looked like she knocked all the other girls down and then went "what have I done? I'll fall down too then." You can put others down to build yourself up and be the "cool girl", but in the end you defined yourself by other people's expectations so you knocked yourself down too. The relationship you build based on being different isn't going to be a healthy one.

3:20 this part really struck me and its when the entirety of the choreography’s meaning fell into place. as the other girls continue dancing dodie sings “i wont be like them” and distances herself from the group. but at the end shes in the same position as before. women so often try and ostracize themselves, whether intentionally or not in order to seek out approval. there are moments where they all blend back together, and the end particularly struck me because they end in the same spots as they began. womanhood is a cycle and societally, it cannot be escaped. they will always be perceived the same. small ‘outbursts’ like this for a lack of better terminology are extremely liberating and limiting simultaneously. oof that was a whole essay lol beautiful job dodes. EDIT: looking back at the part i timestamped i also noticed how her expression changes. when she first steps out of the crowd she looks very proud and defiant, but the camera refuses in that moment to let her have the center stage again and as she becomes smaller, her face falls and it looks almost as if shes forced or pulled back into the same choreography. GOD i just watched this and i already want to go on about it for ages.

@fairygrrl454 жыл бұрын
Beautifully said. It definitely points to the ways we isolate ourselves by trying to be “different” only to be acceptable and accepted in someone else’s eyes. In the end, just as much of a game and performance as any other. I also think there’s something beautifully human in that truth, though, which is that at the end of the day we’re all seeking the same thing, to be loved and accepted for who we are. And we’ll contort into all kinds of knots trying to get it.
@black_swanN4 жыл бұрын
[ Lemme modify my comment...] Actually she never did exactly like everybody else. She always slightly missed some moves, but the more the chore goes on, the more it is difficult for her to blend with the others. Walking is very natural move while they're all keeping the dancing, even out of the chorus line, she doesn't. (she refuses?) So when the chorus comes back, they've all gained in grace and even teamed up. She didn't, and she doen't naturally blend with the others anymore. she can't jump, or spin like a ballerina and basically did and feel excluded from the group. (In contrast to the begining when she was surrounded and much happier) Now, she knows old moves, but she doesn't share anything with the others anymore. All she can do is trying to mimic. Voila :) I see with variations throught all the peoples represented here : a struggle to be oneself. End.

So dodie asked on Instagram how we interpret the song and I wanted to add. dodie's narrative voice is preoccupied with the discussion of broken promises of the past, and the redundant desires to make them again. From 'you didn't call me back' to 'I'll be different' the narrative voice is splintered between past and future, thematically reminiscent of When. I love the contrast of the line 'I'll be different' with the cyclical use of the line in each chorus. The promise to change is encased into the most repetitive structure of the song showing the misplaced determination of the speaker. The music video visually echos this by placing dodie in the same place and position at the start and end of the video. This song is a cycle. This pain can't be cured until dodie grounds the speaker in their own present needs. This relationship promises to adapt but only leaves the character wallowing in self induced pathos.

Applying this to real life, I feel like this song can be such a wake up call for everybody including myself. We can never truly live life authentically until we stop comparing ourselves to others and what we 'could be' or 'used to be'. We need to start living in the now to be happy!

The sequences where everyone is dancing at the same time and the build up to the ending of the song when Dodie knocks them down was mesmerizing. Even when we all are in the same dance doing the same things.
@anna-zc6gv4 жыл бұрын
i love how in contrast to human you’re not constructing someone else to fit you, you’re trying to construct yourself. the variations of you are how you want to be perceived, perhaps by others, or how you want to perceive yourself. maybe it’s like 6/10 with comparison to others or maybe it’s about self love and growing but struggling to do so because how could you possibly fit all these ”cool girls” into a single cool girl. how you all move together but you separate yourself from the others maybe trying to be different and be your own cool girl but then you’re absorbed back into how others perceive you which leads you to feel isolated because you’re not presenting yourself simply another variation of this cool girl. and the ending could be how you detach yourself from it because you don’t feel truthful to who you are portraying to others- and that’s my really bad analysis of it hehehe

I have a migraine so I can't think of a clever way to word this but the patterns of choreography remind me of someone with a mental illness/disorder/neuro divergence masking, finally feeling free to take the mask off, immediately being rejected by society and having to re-mask by mirroring someone "normal"

Hi dodie! I don’t know if you’ll ever see this, but i can’t believe how much this hit me. I’m loud and angsty and hyper and big all the time, and when I like someone, I want to be the universe for them and make everything and anything possible, including if they don’t want me to be me. I’ve fought against my own desire to speak and act for a lot of my life, with the hopes that it would make me more whatever. I just, I don’t know how anyone can do it. I have such a hard time imagining not wanting to express yourself, or not having to fight against it, and so I’ve surrounded myself with people who are as loud and expressive and in sync with their own garbage as me, and it’s wonderful and lovely until I start craving novelty. I guess my phenotype is the one to blaze my own social path; to throw quiet and normal out the window and make a new normal, but it hurts when I like or love someone who rejects that. It’s weird, how love seems to work, and how it attracts us to people that we honestly can be incompatible with. It’s also weird to see someone who you know is too bogged down by their own perceptions of how a life should be ran that, despite them loving you back, they choose to be comfortable. I suppose I shouldn’t fault anyone for being comfortable, especially since that’s all I’m pursuing as well. Aaaanyway, I adore your song, and I adore your words, and it was recommended right when I needed a reminder that being “cool” isn’t necessary or even fun. It’s not worth it, not really. Thank you :)
@bhxnvi67894 жыл бұрын
Look how Dodie is alone in the beginning and then she goes to the other girls. In my opinion the other girls are the "cool girls" different from what Dodie is when she is herself. Also notice that she is barely in coordination with them like she is either before or after. Sometimes her moves dont even match with them. It's like she is trying so hard to fit in but she can't. But then again she's been through all of that after which she swore she wouldnt play the same old game which is why she keeps stopping and walks away. But then she looks at the camera giving it somewhat a sardonic smile, walks a bit and smiles again before going back with them. It's like she is doing this to please someone and this someone here might be represented by the camera. She stops and continues repeatedly, trying to blend in but then remembering that she's been there before but then trying to please someone again. She goes lying again with them blending in. But then she realises how much she had hurt everyone around her and realises she doesn't fit in with them and goes back sitting alone where she first was. She looks at the camera calmly, unbothered of what they think, since she is different and not like them but not difficult. But what she doesnt seem to notice is that everyone is different too. Like no one has been in coordination perfectly all the time as such and yet it's as if Dodie fails to see it. For e.g the girl shown at 0:34 in the beginning is alone in her corner too. Or at 2:21 there's someone else beside her trying to catch up with her, trying to fit in too but Dodie is too blinded by the person(s)/here represented by the camera as I said before. It happens also time where they are doing mismatched/contradictory moves but Dodie doesnt pay notice, her attention focused on the camera.

i used to be a hardcore dodie fan in around 2015/2016 during her "my face" type songs if i remember correctly ( i hardly remember anything that happened a few years ago lol ) and i just got this in my recommended now that i'm fifteen, almost sixteen. dodie helped me come to terms with my depression, my anxiety, my sexuality, with myself in general, and she was also just a presence that made my day brighter everytime i watched one of her videos. and now to see her still making beautiful music, and thriving, is so wonderful. this song is really incredible and has such a great message behind it, and i'm about to go listen to it about twenty more times :))
@giovannibonfiglio92434 жыл бұрын
The way I interpret this song is as follows. It depicts the feelings one experiences when dating/seeing someone who doesn’t respond or match your emotional needs. It’s this constant worry of being annoying because you act out in the middle of the night for the attention your craving. It then expresses the subsequent pain and embarrassment you experience after you’ve ‘acted out’ - I think this is emphasized when dodie sings “chill out if it’s late, or every heavy sigh will seal a fate”. The choreography and the addition of the other girls is to highlight how each of us might experience similar feelings in our lifetime but we aren’t aware of how others around us might experience similar moments of desperation and delayed rejection. The beauty of them dancing similar but not the same is that each of them showcase their insecurities from past relationships differently and that factors into how they respond to manipulative situations.

I find the lines "You will plead and demand all your needs but you can't He'll be asked 'til he's bored I would know, I've been bored before" And "I won't be like them Want me more than friend" To be really interesting. It's like this relationship is similar to "Boys Like You" - there's more, but the partner does not want a romantic relationship. Or, they're sending mixed signals, with them saying no but acting in ways that would suggest romance. They're insistent that they're "just friends", and she wants more, but she feels guilty for wanting more. She's been in this situation before, guy friends who keep pursuing despite rejection. So she thinks she's being like them, and doesn't want to be, so she doesn't say that she wants more out of this. But I think the situation is probably different. This guy does show an interest, likely sexual, in her, whereas she did not show any interest to the guys. But since the guy doesn't want it to be a romantic, likely closed, relationship, it feels very similar. The guy might be using this to manipulate her into staying with him in a not-quite relationship. But this song seems to mostly be about the ways women often perform, mostly for men, and hurt themselves and each other in the process. "Cool girl" disparages most women as being "uptight", "nags", "clingy", etc.
