How were the gears selected on the front unit?

The early models used a long linkage to engage and disengage the range lever. You had to dismount to change the gears by hand on the front unit. Then you used the linkage to engage the range. The later models engaged the gears pneumatically on the front unit. That’s the large looped tube you can see running between the units.
