I think that knowing taylor molded 1989 based on the "flaws" of her previous album, Red - which was considered her best album yet but veeeeery critized by the critics for being messy and not knowing where to stand - really makes you look at it differently like, there were other pop girlies back then who were doing good and subjectively even better than taylor, but for her, who was already estabilshed as a country singer, full transition to another genre really makes it even more special, because she got the whole world on their knees thinking "tf this girl is doing" lol i wouldn't say this is her best work, but it's a very important album in her carrier for presenting Taylor to a much wider audience. like, if THIS was taylor's first impression to manyyy many people, think of how many people started to tune in to see what else she had in store. used to be my favorite album until folklore came and stabbed me in the back :'))

But the critics actually consider RED as her magnum opus.
@thrsdayschld Жыл бұрын
@@Fucorii i said that more based on when she lost the AOTY for Red and said she immediatly jumped into the 1989 idea an wanting to do a more cohesive project (which was what red was most critized about)
@Fucorii Жыл бұрын
@@thrsdayschld yes. That was the only flaw of RED. But the critics also liked the fact that it was not cohesive. Cause it resembles the fact that love and break up is just as messy as RED. While 1989 is more cohesive, catchier and digestible than RED, it was nowhere near acclaimed as RED.

Now my fav is prolly folklore, but I have such an attachment to this album that'll never go away. Every time I come back to it I always feel so happy and nostalgic because it reminds me of sitting on my bedroom floor with my CD player listening to it and then watching all of the music videos on repeat. I just love this album! Right now my fav song on it is prolly Clean, Wildest Dreams, or All You Had To Do Was Stay, but back in 2014 it was prolly Blank Space or Style. But tbh, I've always loved them all :)

You talked about how consistent this album is, so I'll share a piece of information that for some reason a lot of reactors don't know Maybe it's bc I'm a veteran swiftie but i think this is important: In all of her albums up until Reputation, Taylor hid secret messages in the lyric booklets for each song. The special thing about the 1989 secret messages is that they form a story. Here it is: Welcome to New York : We begin our story in New York. Blank Space : There once was a girl known by everyone and no one. Style : Her heart belonged to someone who couldn't stay. Out of the Woods : They loved each other recklessly. All You Had to Do Was Stay : They paid the price. Shake It Off : She danced to forget him. I Wish You Would : He drove past her street each night. Bad Blood : She made friends and enemies. Wildest Dreams : He only saw her in his dreams. How You Get the Girl : Then one day he came back. This Love : Timing is a funny thing. I Know Places : And everyone was watching. Clean : She lost him, but she found herself and somehow, that was everything

My favorite off the album is this love. This Love is something different to the rest of the album. While Clean probably has the best lyrics, This Love ties really close to it. I agree with everything you said. I understand why this album is so popular because it’s simple. Other than Clean, You Are In Love, and New Romantics none of the other songs have very good “bars”. Very easy and digestible. Clean is a top 5 song by her in my opinion though. “You understand now why they lost their minds and fought the wars and why I’ve spent my whole life trying to put it into words” for me is her epitome of music put into a single lyric which is amazing.

I'm here again, because I will strongarm the algorithm to get you to the eras tour all by myself! Over all I agree with your take on the album, the high school grades metaphor was solid. I think it's both her most polished and most commercial work, and it did exactly what she intended. It's also the most consistent (besides folklore). I respect it a lot and it's full of bangers, but maybe lacking a little in soul. I also can't quite divorce the album from the tour in my head, she was killing it but also clearly dealing with eating disorders and her life just seemed really stressful. I think that colors my experience. I am a Blank Space girl though, always have been, so there is that. My top five: 1. Blank Space 2. Clean 3. Style 4. Wildest Dreams 5. I Wish You Would The one song I dislike is All You Had To Do Was Stay, which again proves that this album is less about the feels, since I'm normally a track five stan. Shake It Off is fine. Not great, not terrible, just very overplayed, I don't know what to tell ya.

i'm gonna need a whole video on why New Romantics is alr 🤣 rob sheffield hit it on the head imho: it's urgent and glittery. It's where she really indulges all that Eighties synth-pop she warned us about, with a mascara-smudged nod to the New Romantic scene that gave us Duran Duran and Adam Ant. It’s the best song the Pet Shop Boys never wrote. When that chorus hits, she’s inside the mirror ball, on a floor where the lights and boys are blinding and playing cool won’t cut it anymore.

I think the disaster from musical critics that she received during RED really pushed her to the edge. That album was ahead of its time. Glad people and critics now look at RED in a different landscape. But yeah 2013/2014 was an F moments from Taylor to the whole public. Like starting in earlier 2010s, country radio stations were starting to banned female artists, and it effected to Taylor's singles. Speak Now singles didn't perform better than Fearless singles and RED country singles as well. But interestingly since the beginning of her career, Pop market always take Taylor's Pop mix singles and she got massive hits with it. So yeah instead of making another country album to her yeehaw audience and know the singles most likely would flop, she was taking the risk to move to Pop market completely, which was always waiting for her. 1989 was definitely the clap back from Taylor to everyone who questioned her range of making music. She really said enough of the fake country accent and it was time for Cowboy Swift stormed the whole world.

@@hassanmansour9857 thank you. It was really the issue back then. Like Taylor's career took over and changed how people viewed country music. And some of it in such a horrendous way. But basically it was misogynistic reason. Male country singers were terrified that their careers are going to be compared to the Taylor swift. And they never look at her in the same way like Pop style idolised her. The country bros even made fun of her country music. The rumours from the streets were also saying they were afraid if another Taylor Swift show up all of a sudden. So yeah they decided to give the female country singers less airplay than the male country artist. It was nothing new that country music is always kinda straight and old fashioned to their artists and audience.
@YourvitamineD Жыл бұрын
@@hassanmansour9857 Country music industry would find anything to demolish Taylor's country legacy. They've been questioned if her accent was real from the first. But they forgot that Taylor was a lil girl move to Nashville and she got bills to pay. So yeah Taylor needed to do what she did. They also been questioned her music if it's country enough. But miss blondie was smart and knew how to capture every room that she entered. The masses can't take her no more and pushed her to the edge when she released RED. She knew she had to leave them. FYI, they erased Taylor's spot in the honourable murals for legends/icons in county music. It just happened like 1-2 years ago.

To answer yer question: 1989 ranks 7th for me. I totally agree with all of your thoughts on the album. As for my favorite songs. - Blank Space (because of the 1989 Tour - "SYDNEYYYYYY!!!" ) - Style (the instrumentals!) - AYHTDWS (you explained why I love it) - This Love (TV - I love it more than the OG) - How You Get the Girl (pretty much a bangerrrrr and the tour made it 1000000 times better) - Clean (the tour version, I love it) It is really a hit or miss album but we cannot deny the impact of this album in the pop music industry. This is where it was confirmed that she will stay here longer than what is expected of female singers. Just imagine, all these years, new artists arrived but here she is, still thriving and is still popular. One of the few female artists that really made it.

I feel like after the eras saga series is over, you should do one where you analyze and understand the meaning of all songs by asking swifties. Just a suggestion ❤

That’s because this was freshman year of pop for Taylor. I remember when it came out EVERYBODY was hating on her and saying they missed the old, country Taylor. Then it became her most popular, it defies odds, that’s what makes 1989 special

Style is definitely my favourite song off the album, simply because the intro is superior and the guitar is so catchy. I also love New Romantics, Welcome To New York and All You Has To Do Was Stay!

It’s so hard to pick a top 5 from this one! Mine is probably: 1) Style 2) Blank Space 3) Wonderland 4) I Wish You Would 5) All You Had To Do Was Stay (honorable mentions Out of The Woods and Wildest Dreams)

1989 is so hard to place in my ranking because my brain lights up like a pinball machine whenever it's mentioned but it has the least amount of emotional impact, lyrically? but a lot of emotional impact just based off of nostalgia from that album. but every song SLAPS. like it MIGHT be top 3.

It is a Harry Styles homage in form of album, each and every song - besides This Love and Shake it off - is a representation of the push and pull inside a toxic relationship! (And how I wish i was a fly inside that car when the accident happened!!)
