I hear it quite a bit ".22 Magnum rivals .380 ACP", but does it really? So what I am doing today is trying to stack the odds to make that happen. I am using a 2.75" Ruger LCP with Winchester USA 95 gr JHP ammo which is average/mediocre, VS one of the better .22 Magnum rounds out of a 4.75" Heritage Rough Rider with Speer Gold Dot 40 gr JHP. I am doing a bologna/MDF human analog follow by 10% Clear Ballistics. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.com/user?u=5828221

I realize this is an old video,it just showed up on my feed I found it interesting. Thought I would throw this out. I purchased one of those Heritage 22-22 mag pistols years ago ,gave 100$ new in box. It’s a shorter 3.5 inch barrel. Got it so as to have a cheap gun to keep in the truck to use for dispatching feral hogs I catch in my hog traps. Over the years now have shot just about everything under the sun through it, never had a single misfire. Settled primarily on two rounds in particular for hog dispatching, Federal 50 grain game shok. Jhp . And CCI 40 grain maxi or mini mag ( I forget) fmj . Now take this for what it’s worth, that little pistol, with those rounds, at point blank range out to about about 10 feet , with a head shot , will drop a 250 lb feral hog like a sack of turds. That’s dead in its tracks . I most definitely would not ever want to be shot with a 22 mag . Ever. That’s my 2 cents.

I gave him 2 more rounds trying to put him out of his misery and he still wouldn’t die. He was shot already with a 22lr before I got there. My buddy killed finally killed it with a sledgehammer. 22mag over 380 any day

Thanks for sharing. Gives me comfort. Just bought the exact revolver, 3.5" barrel, birdshead grip. Haven't taken receipt of it yet but the one thing I know is that 22WMR is effective on a number of 4 and 2 legged critters not to mention Gators down here in Texas.

@@rumtumdrumr3922funny. This old post keeps coming back. Remember shot placement is key . On a hog ,when I say a head shot, I dont mean between the eyes. In mean (IN) the eye, or in the earhole. Get that 22 boolat in there where in needs to be ,where it's most effective. And no even still today I most definitely never would want to be shot with a 22 mag.

This was a great test; however, I would have preferred to see a better representation of a 22 magnum carry gun. I believe that a Ruger LCR, S&W j-frame, Taurus or Charter Arms snub would have been great (I'm not a fan of NAA one inch barrel single-actions for self-defense carry). That being said, I understand that it may be difficult to get access to one of these just for an afternoon test. Thanks very much for your efforts and sharing with us, Sam! :)

Yeah, I would like a snub in .22 Mag, but knowing what they are not capable of, I thought why not buy the cheap long barrel revolver and show it. In a snub I would probably lose 25% of the energy I got, bringing it not far off from .22 LR. That's my whole thing with .22 Mag snubs, is they really are not worth it, but when you get over 3" of barrel it starts to become worth it.

NAA Black Widow is great. If you are at all interested in a Mini Revolver, that is the one to get. It has good sights, a 2.5 inch barrel, a comfortable grip, and an easier to use cylinder pin. Unlike the more common minis, the black Widow has a barrel a little longer than a J frame's, yet still has the tiny frame making it super easy to carry. Yeah you can't slip it into a watch pocket like the regular minis, but you can drop it into a side or back pocket just fine. Hell, I even have a tiny belt holster for it for when I want to be the ranger with the little iron on his hip!

Something to consider that Sam missed, the mass of the 380 will break bones and pass through whereas the 22 mag is gonna catch and bounce around instead your organs. I'm actually the most commonly overlooked self defense round that's gonna stop a threat is the 22 mag. One shot and you can damage the liver, lungs, heart, all the way down to the groin depending on where the bullet bounces from and to.

I’m always impressed by your videos! Even more now that you are using gelatin instead of water jugs for an even more accurate measure of the firearms ability. But I do find it inaccurate to compare a rounds performance when one is 2.5 inches and the other is 5 inches. To be fair to both you should have used one of the new Ruger snub nose 22 magnum revolvers. Then both guns would be what would be practically carried for self defense. Don’t get me wrong I happen to love and have carried both. I actually have to qualify twice a year with both out to 25 Yds. in order to be allowed to carry them.

Interesting. The 22 WMR both penetrated a littke farther and expanded a little better than expected. I was expecting a little over 12" equivalent and maybe .30". 16 in and .37" is quite good. Speer knows what they are doing with Gold Dots. The scenario i see is someone using it as a trail gun for dispatching animals (like a trapper) or small game hunting, and suddenly having to defend themselves. Another scenario might be a responsible, trained teenager at home who is still inexperienced and/or recoil sensitive. We used to recommend 22 mags to elderly customers with lower hand strength and/or recoil tolerance at the gun shop where i worked 26 yrs ago- or a Blackhawk 357 with modest 38 loads. I like my 4.75" Single Six fixed sight a lot, and i would not hesitate to use it for a trail gun. The 380 ammo did surprisingly well also. I was expecting minimal to no expansion and 12" or less, and it did better in both areas. Good to know.

The .380 can have trouble meeting hollow point expansion threshold out of a short barrel so it's nice to see that it can work decently. The Winchester white box round is really a good bargain. I've been a hunter- outdoorsman for a very long time. 22 mag is very capable if you use shot placement. Also I used to carry a stainless Ruger Single Six on my side while wade fishing. It was always loaded with CCI maxi-v+. Underwater for the bigger part of the day. On several occasions a fishing partner would say if you had to use that revolver it wouldn't fire. I would proceed to show them it would. Never failed!? After my trips I would completely tear down the weapon, clean, oil and ready for my next trip. Out of a 4 to 6 inch barrel it would obliterate a snake head. From a rifle I have seen whitetail deer taken with heart shots. Not at 200 yards, but 50 to 100 easily. My 22 mag rifle is usually loaded with CCI 40gr full metal jacket flatnose or Winchester 40gr. SJHP (lead nose hollow point for expansion at longer distance). For .22 long rifle Winchester 42gr. In the black box would be my choice in a pistol or revolver. Check that load out! Pretty impressive, (The Old Fat Dad has some testing with it here on YT).

Beautiful chunk of property you have. Meanwhile, I live in a swamp up north. An AWESOME comparison between these two. Just a useful side note. I've shot different makes of 22 mag through my NAA mini revolver. the best performer was the Winchester Varmint HV. Out of this little 1 inch barrel it clocked an average of 1,296fps!! This out performed all the CCI. So if you find a box or two, GET IT!

@@GunSam 😂😂😂. Yes. I've seen no fewer than 5 vids on KY ballistics. Interesting enough, you're one of the few I'd be interested in hearing an opinion / take on the situ. I see nothing wrong with the RN50. Thousands and thousands of ball rounds, etc, have been run through them. It's fairly well know slap rounds with a brake is a no no. It's quite unfortunate. I'm looking forward to Mark Serbu doing analysis on the gun, powder, and brass, etc, if any of that was recovered.

@@joshuagibson2520 I would never do a video on his event, but I can share my thoughts here. Basically, I have mixed feelings. At the end of the day I am glad he's alive, no doubt, however what I think of his channel personally in general has a lot to do with his event. His videos always start with " WHAT'S UP EVERYBODY!", which is a greeting that kids channels usually use, and interestingly enough my son is 8 and has no interest in guns, yet I caught him watching Kentucky Ballistics. And of course my son found him, because videos like shooting Stretch Armstrong and RC cars is going to put KB into an algorithm for younger viewers. So what my overview is, is that Scott knew (much like I do with my pellet gun videos) that younger viewers will watch more than old guys as long as it's "crazy" content. So we all can see that Kentucky Ballistics went from a legitimate gun channel, to a crazy 'wild stuff happening' kids channel, sort of mixing reality with video game nonsense, all the while using his LE background to obtain fully automatic weapons to make these crazy videos. Ultimately I think Scott is, or was at a point where channel growth and crazy content took over common sense, and doing the craziest stuff to go overboard with growth for a buck, well I think that just got the better of him. I mean, I am not judging the situation as who wouldn't want to succeed in life, but I think he pushed it too far. Kids enjoy his videos, but he also sets a bad example as some kid might see one of his videos, grab his dad's rifle and head out and do who knows what- trying to imitate Scott. As far as the gun that exploded, I have no knowledge on that part to make a comment, but in general like I was saying about kids imitating Scott, showing any firearm shoot any steel is not smart unless it's truly a legit ballistic experiment like car doors and whatnot. No one would be shooting fire hydrants with any guns ever, or safes, or punching bags or whatever other nonsense he's showing these kids because they might take dad's .22 and stick the muzzle up to metal, or some stupid variation of Scott's stupid "experiments". Long story short, there is way too much exciting crazy content, with zero warnings given. At least with channels like TAOFLEDERMAUS or similar, there is caution taken and a lot of verbal warnings about what they did or didn't do or what could happen. That's my take on it.

I thought of an idea you could use ??? if you got 2 squares of inner tube rubber and rubber glued the edges and clamped it with a tyre valve in one corner with an air pressure indicator attached to that. you'll see how much air is displaced with the expansion of the bullet . if it's a hollow point then you'll have higher levels compared to a pointier round that will just pass through. but maybe good idea can be made longer thinner etc etc I hope you see my vision. I mean it should be in front of balistic gek

With 3 different HP rounds, NO failures of any kind and the group sizes were about HALF of what the hardball ammo was! It really likes the HP rounds!

I am new at hanging steel. I just went with rubber just for no reason, had some straps and tried it. The bullet fragments are cutting the rubber up, chain would have been better. But the rubber makes it more challenging when it bounces.

I have a Taurus TCP in 380, shoots well, never had an issue with it. Also have a Kel-Tec PMR30 in 22 WMR/22 mag. The PMR30 is not really conducive to concealed carry. I have but tend to carry my TCP or my SSCY CPX 1 9 mm. The only thing I’m not thrilled with with the PMR30 is it has a very touch trigger. If you aren’t paying attention one could have an AD quite easily. For background, I spent 16 years Army Active duty/Reserves, 12 years as a cop, 14 years as a state corrections officer. So I have shot just a little bit in my life. Still like my 1911’s though, by far my favorite.

I watched this because I have both calibers, a 380 Bersa and a 22 Savage rifle. People really under estimate the power of small caliber weapons. The 22 has almost no kick, and I can shoot 100 rounds (which is a lot) through it with no fatigue. I am not surprised the 22 pistol has more penetrating power and velocity. At 200 yards a rifle will kill a full grown hog.
