Clipping in theory for a driver, is almost exactly the same as putting a bare coil on the table, and running a sign wave through it, or DCV +/- through it. Think of your driver as a light bulb. That’s kinda what clipping is. Thing is, not all drivers are affected by such, and in return can damage your amp as it becomes the next weak point. Hopefully this makes sense.

Everything you said was pretty much spot on. Seems some people have selective hearing and only hear what they want. But some of their arguments have merit. In the world of car audio, clipping is associated with thermal damage.Usually when we clip it is while we push our subs/amps. So clipping our amps/subs and damage "is" synonymous, so technically clipping (in the car audio world) does indeed relate to damage. Apples and oranges really. Your videos are a massive information dump for a lot of beginner car audio enthusiast and have motivated many to dive deeper into this amazing hobby. Ive been doing car audio builds since the mid 90's and am never satisfied. We must go bigger and louder..lol. I started off with 10" pyramid subs from the 90's and have evolved into 8 18" Ampere Audio's running 32,000 watts of rockville audio strapped mono blocks in a 3rd gen honda odyssey. Bass head through and through. I can never get enough. Keep up the good work.

Not wrong at all. It's always heat or mechanical stress. Buuuut clipping has the same mechanical effect as over excursion, holding the driver in place at the limits of travel and just sending power through it while it doesn't move, creating heat. Tinsel leads are often burnt this way, not mechanically stressed. Edit: it's not the clipping, per se, but clipping near or above the rated RMS will always cause problems. The guitar analogy while correct, seems flawed, guitars are clipped in preamp stage, and also contain such a wide frequency range that a 100w guitar amp is typically using 25-30 at full volume and the signal after the preamp stays clean, lessening any chance of problems.

all true, still consider, the pre-amp stage of the guitar amp versus the pre-amp stage of a car amp. its the same part of the signal chain. also consider that when someone clips a subwoofer to death, its ALWAYS accompanied by maximum power, i am planning a demonstration

I'm not clear on one of your points. It seems you associate a clipped signal out of an amplifier with the speaker reaching its maximum excursion levels. I just want to clarify that this isn't always the case. For example, you could have a 500 watt RMS rated subwoofer and power it with a 100 watt RMS amplifier. You could push that amplifier beyond its limits and make it output an extremely clipped signal. Regardless of what enclosure design is being used, you're not getting enough output for the subwoofer to reach its mechanical limits yet the sub is mimicking the movement of the almost square wave. It's moving, stopping, moving, stopping, and generating a tremendous amount of heat during the periods that it's stationary. It's possible this 100 watt amplifier could burn up the coil in that 500 watt subwoofer. Maybe, maybe not, but it would be close. I think a 200 watt amplifier on a 400 watt sub under the same circumstances could definitely burn up the voice coil. So there doesn't have to be a mechanical excursion limit involved. If I misunderstood what you said, sorry in advance.

i speak on both mechanical clipping, and signal clipping. 2 different things.

power handling is more determined by the type of enclosure it is in and the tuning of the system. the longer the coil is out the gap of the more heat and resistance that is created. Clipping has the coil out the gap longer which will create sub failure. made good points but there is so much that goes into equipment failure. I have gone 3 years without equipment failure.

Tweeters are tough. How I pick my tweeters is with a RTA reading to start. I pick the types that aligns with the frequencies I’m missing, and/or have to boost. Some cases, you just need more tweeters.

Barevids dude did a video on this a few years back essentially saying that clipping being a high frequency was nullified by the amps signal filters.

in fairness Barevids was talking about the signal from the source to the amp being clipped, and the amp output being clean.

You aint hittin if you aint clipping😎 For real though I always add a little clip to the signal. I gotta trunk so I dont hear distortion as much as I feel it with a little more excursion 🙃😂 I just dont play loud for more than 4 tracks usually. I let the subs cool for about 10 minutes if they aluminum and Copper Coils I let cool for about 10 at mid-volume. Haven't burnt up anything outside of stress testing.

If you are not clipping you should be able to play at rated rms for way longer. I’m playing my subs at 1500 over rms and can play for 30 minutes with no problems

Something else thats kills a subwoofer is buying a cheap sub like i did (wolfram ag12 v2 subwoofer rates for 1250 watts rms) and only giving it about 700 watt from the amp and having the subwoofer snap its tensil lead in half and get told that it was user error and have a blow subwoofer that only lasted less than a year. Get you a quality built subwoofer.
@CarAudioEnthusiasts
@CarAudioEnthusiasts 4 күн бұрын
well, id say buying a cheap sub is fine, as long as you treat it like a cheap sub. which you did. the issue was bad engineering, and incorrect specs listed. 2 issues that plague the world right now.

There are two kinds of speaker failure sir which is mechanical and thermal. clipping causes both of these things to happen easier so for u to say clipping doesn't cause damage to speakers is very irresponsible

If u send 10 watts of a clip signal to a speaker that is rated for 100 watts of course u wouldn't damage the speaker but if u give it a 100 watts the recommended amount the speaker is rated at but clip the 100 watts it will mostly damage the speaker

What is a clipped signal? It’s converting an AC signal to DC, and yes that will burn up a voice coil. Not even going to watch this BS
