I had a guy doing that yesterday. I told him about 10 times, literally. After that, I just said whatever and focused on him just not pointing the pistol at other people on the line. The back of his pistol was SOAKED in blood at the end of the day, but he didn’t shoot anybody.

I think some people may be a bit confused by this demo and the title of the video. The reason his thumb did not get injured was because he had it in a position where he could directly oppose the recoil force without injury. If his thumb had be only partly obstructing the slide, then he would have been cut. You're not likely to lose a finger but it can give you a good cut.

i shoot with a modern thumbs forward grip and i always get slide bite on my shooting hand with glock on the web of my hand where the base of my thumb contacts the slide.
@Bill-h2m11 күн бұрын
What type of pistol are you demonstrating these techniques?
@jheckert13 жыл бұрын
I shoot thumbs forward, but the other week i was shooting from a rest for the first time to sight in a gun. I left my left hand thumb float behind the slide, it went back hit my thumb and then on its way back forward it caught the tip of my thumb between slide and gun. It hurt and left a good cut, but not bad enough that i had to quit shooting. Got some tape and tissue and finished the job. All my pistols are fixed sights so i never shot from a rest and wasn't quite sure what to do with the left hand...lol...lesson learned... good video...

As you said, you are a professional and I am just a average dude. I am trying to understand. From the front of the cartridge a 125 gr bullet goes from 0 to 1100 fps in 3 inches. For that action I thought there should be a equal and opposite reaction. The back of the cartridge should have the same foot pounds pushing backwards. In which I feel the kick in my hand. The cartridge is pushing rearward on the slide. Please explain how this is possible to push a thumb and stop the rearward movement.
@petersmythe64623 жыл бұрын
The recoilling weapon has the same and opposite momentum, not the same energy or "foot pounds." This is why you can shoot things like .50 Cal BMG without flying across the room, since a 20 kJ round obviously doesn't impart 20 kJ of kinetic energy into the shooter (sending them flying back at ~20 m/s, which is 45 mph). Instead, it recoils with equal momentum, and as such launches the shooter back at more like 0.5 m/s. Still a hard kick but nowhere near sending you up a 2 story building that the energy of a round would indicate.

My husband had this issue with a Glock but didnt have the same issue with a Beretta. It really turned him off of Glock. He does have a high grip and is also heavy on the trigger which causes his aim to be off. And he was a Marine. I do believe that his grip style was due to the larger pistols that are used in the military vs some of the smaller 9mms out there. But he does get bitten and it really turns him off. I'd love for him to just shed some of his pride and have some lessons so he can become even more proficient. I love lessons. I'm constantly taking classes to become better just because I'm a perfectionist.

I got hurt by mine today. I was so focused on something else i didn't realize my thumb was on the back of the gun. After I fired and felt pain in my hand, I couldn't figure out what was hanging off the back of the gun at first, then realized it was my skin The casing didn't eject either 👍

@bud83292 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I always thought you'd lose a thumb. Makes sense, because if you hinder the slide even somewhat slightly, then most of the time it won't eject correctly, and/or fully load the next round. So apparently, there's not a lot of thrust going on with the slide. 👍

I am have slide bite when I soot the gun ONE handed. How do I prevent this. It is Tomcat by Beretta.
@geaugafirearmsacademy8 жыл бұрын
+Digger DanielG Thanks for watching, I think you maybe still confused about “slide bite”. Slide bite is when the slide cuts the shooters support hand because it’s placed behind the slide improperly. (For reference look at the video starting around 55 seconds.) While shooting with one hand this is nearly impossible unless you somehow grab the slide and grip with one hand at the same time. Where on your hand does slide hit your hand when you shoot one handed?
@diggerdanielg7528 жыл бұрын
+Geauga Firearms Academy when you hold a gun, most guns have a beaver tail to protect the upper part of you hand. A Beretta Tomcat has a beaver tail but it is very small. I was shooting it and the slide scratched across the upper part of my hand, just under the slide. I just wondered would a glove help? Or would the glove get caught in the slide?
@geaugafirearmsacademy8 жыл бұрын
+Digger DanielG The glove would protect your hand but I would focus on achieving the proper grip. Ultimately with one hand or two with a proper grip slide bite should not happen. In addition, the gun must fit the shooter’s hand (which sounds like your gun does not). I would suggest other small guns that have more (effecting, cheaper, and more readily available) calibers that can still be easy concealed and help you shoot better one hand or two. I would suggest holding and shooting the Springfield XDs, Smith and Wesson Shield, and Ruger LC9s Pro all in 9mm. Hope that helps.
@diggerdanielg7528 жыл бұрын
+Geauga Firearms Academy Well My Tomcat was bought to replace a 32 auto my father gave me. I had to sell it to live until my social security started. I do not plan to shoot it often. I guess I will just have to let it bite, because the grip is so close to the slide.

@oscarello627 жыл бұрын
Collin Landis, what this guy is doing is preventing the slide from working as designed by blocking it with his thumb, that's why there was no second shot, because it was not loaded. Then the second time he grabbed the slide with the other hand, also preventing it from working. What Hickok adviced is how to prevent the bite assuming you let the pistol work as intended.
