i did this to my garage 11 years ago along with installing a mini split 12k btu system, i just bought some 4' x 8' r-tech foam insulation board and cut my pieces out of that, worked out great for 1/2 or less the price of precut kits. i live in Vegas and i maintain my garage at 75 deg. year-round and it is a wonderful environment to work in. you can find mini splits for $800 to $1100, and they are easy to install, once you have one i don't think you could ever be without one. also, we need more fathers teaching their young ones these much needed skills in life, glad to see it.

Great video on the installation and teaching your son the measuring tape. I just installed the same panels on my garage door, wished it would have been as simple as yours. My door has the windstorm reinforcements and half of the panels had to be cut at 21 inches. I also had to cut and fill 2 3/8 inch filler strips in the C-channel vertical rails. Caution if you have the windstorm horizontal rails going across your door, lock your door and take off no more than 2 cross rails at a time to install the panels. Start from the top and work down. If you take all the rails off your door will shoot up like a rocket! I live on the South TX coast.

Honestly, I was just watching this video as a part of a workshop renovation rabbit hole and was uninterested until I saw what I call a "teachable moment" where you took the opportunity to not only teach the audience but also your kid how to read a tape measure. That is how you can tell you're a good dad.

Yes it does. I added it to my garage door in Florida (in addition to some insulation in the attic). My garage faces east and by 9am it was an oven! Now it is very much more comfortable. I do not have AC in the garage, but it is attached to the home and having the attached space cooler reduces heat load on the home. I did not measure it for keeping the garage warmer in winter. Not really an issue here. I used exactly the same insulation kit for the door. Really looks good. Yes it was a little more quiet. You SHOULD re-balance the door after installing, or at least check the balance. With the door closer disconnected you should be able to raise the door manually and the door should stay in any position without falling down or raising up. If the door drops back down, or raises up when you release it, it needs to be balanced. If you do not know how to do that, you should get a professional to do it. Adjusting torsion springs can be very dangerous if you do it wrong or do not have the proper tools.

Same deal here: North Florida; garage faces east. It felt like a sauna. I blew insulation into the attic floor and mounted pink rigid-board in the door - with bubble wrap against the steel panels to open a small air gap. Stopped short of adding AC once I found that placing a fan in the doorway from the house runs just enough cooler air in - to make working out there bearable most of the time. The longer that runs the better it gets.

I used a cheap kit bought online. One side was silver to point to the outside. Material was about 1/3" thick foam, very light. So far this summer, it has made a 8-14 degree difference. Probably not as much in cold weather. Well worth it.

I live in New Orleans and have a south-facing two car metal garage door. The walls of my garage are already insulated with fiberglass batt. Six years ago I installed double layer reflective mylar with a 1/2" "bubble wrap" layer. I used a kit that came with double stick tape to attach the insulation. The difference was dramatic, the kit was relatively inexpensive and the whole job took just a couple of hours. I think the key is that each panel of the door becomes a dead air space and the mylar layers are effective against infrared radiation. I then bought a roll of similar insulation 4 feet wide and stapled it to the underside of the roof joists. In the summer the garage stays cooler on the inside than the outside ambient temperature. Again, cheap, quick and effective.

We closed 2 bays of our carport in for a game room but we recently turned it in to an apt for our son after he and his fiance were victims of a home invasion so now it's rly important it be efficient. Walls are insulated but 2 garage doors aren't. Is the mylar better in this situation? If so, can you pls link me to what you used? Southeast GA here so it gets rly hot.

@@TheKatiness Hi Kathy. I am not sure about Mylar. The insulation I used doesn't have a lot of insulating properties. Their R value is only 4.8. There are many products that will do significantly better. May not look as nice (which was one of my important factors). If someone were to live in the area certainly you would want something with a much greater R value. I added insulation panels using 8 ft x 4 ft styrofoam panels after my garage door spring broke. Contractor replaced both springs with the wrong springs to begin with then contractor blamed me for adding the extra weight. I used an infrared thermometer on the exposed panels vs the insulated panels and there is a big 20 degree difference in the summer time. I hired a second contractor who conducted a complete written assessment of the door springs/weight and confirmed the first contractor was a waste of my time and money as the panels made very little weight difference if any. I have a mini freezer in my garage and my intent is to get a longer use from my freezer. Great job on the video!

I just had a very seasoned garage door person out too. I had a spring brake. He told me it had nothing to do with the added weight. He said it was all due to the number of cycles. We use our garage door as our "front door". He told me you could make a minor adjustment for the weight but wasn't particularly neccessary.Thanks so much William! Really appreciate it.

When I lived in Colorado, having insulation in the garage doors made a huge difference. The temperature in the garage was at least 10 degrees warmer in the winter time.

I added 1.5 inch foil faced solid insulation to my metal sectional door, it worked great.. The garage is cooler in summer, warmer in winter, and quieter.

If a heavier insulation affects your garage door opener, it just means you need to readjust the springs. I would suggest letting a professional do that since he will have the right tool and will know what he is doing. Those springs can be dangerous.

I would caution anyone messing with those garage door opener springs. They can kill or maim you that's how much tension they are under. Call in a professional to handle that. They have tolerances that need to be adhered to.

@@dustinswafford9232 I redid my garage springs myself with much longer thicker springs that have a 192,000 cycles longevity vs the standard 10,000 cycles. They should now outlast me as I got tired of replacing springs every 6 or 7 years as the garage would normally go through 3 to 8 cycles a day. Less risk of a longer thicker spring breaking under tension as it doesn't approach near the limits of its optimum operating range for a given lifting force like a short life spring does.

Insulated garage doors in several homes, I do recommend this procedure in order to keep the heat out. Florida and Vegas where temperatures obviously get up there. So humid in Florida that we added an air conditioning as well. Less humidity in the garage than the house, just running the Mini - Split on dehumidifier, highly recommend. 👍👍👍. 7-28-21. Installing an air conditioner in my garage is something I have always wanted to do for many, many years. Not as costly as originally expected but the outcome has been very, very delightful and I know that the vehicles and other storage in the garage is amazing. Every time we open the garage doors from the outside, it is unbelievable how cool the experience walking into the garage, every time. You will not be disappointed.

Insulation is going to change the weight of the door. The opener might lift it for a time, but its the springs that ACTUALLY lift the weight of the door. If your opener is lifting more than 10lbs, your door will need springs that will match the new weight of the door to keep your opener alive as long as possible. Or get yourself a whole new package that comes with an insulated steel back door and opener that will last for the life of your home! :) Cheers and glad your son was able to learn and take part!

Using an infrared thermometer on a portion of the door that has the insulation and a portion of the door that doesn’t would give you an idea of how effective the insulation is. Since you have finished, you could measure the outside of the door and compare it to the temperature of the insulation on the inside. You will still have air coming around the sides depending on the seal along the sides of the door.

I haven't read all 790-some comments to see whether anyone else commented on this, but: If your opener won't pull the door up, it's worth having a garage door pro assess the coil spring to see if it can be adjusted to balance the door better. I have adjusted the springs on a few doors over the years as a DIY basis, but I strongly encourage having this done professionally. Someone I know had a spring fail (it was twenty-some years old), suggesting that periodic inspection and replacement of the springs isn't a bad idea as a safety issue.

I added this insulation to my doors and it makes a noticeable difference. I think mine is more like 10 degrees cooler in summer and even more than that differential in winter because I have a radiant heater in there, so it holds the heat better. The side benefits are that it the doors look nicer, the garage is a little brighter and there is less outside noise coming in. Definatley worth it in my opinion.

Thanks Diane for everything you said and you're continued encouragement and support. I will tell you in the hot months it is a little tricky. It does heat up in the garage slower than without insulation. But, as the evening comes it also traps the heat in the garage and you will find the temperature outside is much cooler than in the garage. What we have learned to do is once the temps start really dropping in the evening is we will crack the garage door open. Seems to resolve that issue.

I lived in Canada north of North Dakota for about three years and I insulated my garage door as I was working on my car a lot. It made a massive difference. If you think about one of your 4 walls being just thin metal it’s a massive place of heat loss. I could keep the garage at about 50 when it was 5 deg out with just a little electric space heater.

In Oklahoma and I just installed this kit into my door. 16 panels. Temperature outside today is a balmy 7 degrees. It is 32 in the garage. Almost made it without it freezing in the garage. I also installed the seals on the exterior. That seemed to make sure there was minimal draft coming in. Good product and video!🥶🌡❄

I have had west facing garages in my past 2 homes. I always installed insulation on doors and it does cut down sound and it provides a little inside protection from denting the panels as a bonus. I also put it on my shop door and it does not cut temps a lot, but it does reduce the radiation of heat feom a metal surface. I'm not worried about cold, I am concerned with a summer full of hundred degree days.

Ordered an insulated garage door when my house was being built. Then had the attic of garage insulated a year or so later. But, did not insulate the walls, so some benefit, but not as much as I was hoping for. Still glad I did it. But recommend the walls be insulated as well.

Thanks Jason. The garage stays a few degrees cooler than outside during the day. But, the comfort difference is feels like much more than that. I can tell you that it feels cooler with the garage door down than with it up despite the breeze you may get. On the other side of it when you get into the evening it holds the heat in too. I live in a southwest US desert neighborhood where the new housing tract has cloned domiciles next door to each other, so I can speak with some certainty about the effectiveness of garage door insulation, and it does work. My insulated garage door and my next-door-neighbor gets the same amount of Summer mid-to-late-morning sunlight exposure, where the surface exterior temperature of both doors can exceed 120 degrees F. The interior surface of the next-door neighbor's uninsulated garage door will be a couple of degrees lower, at around 116 to 118 degrees F. The interior of my insulated garage door measures around 100 ~ 105 degrees F. So, when it comes to sunlight heating of the garage door, the insulation does lower the temperature. With regards to the operating the garage door opener? I have no idea, as I manually lift the garage door for opening, and tug on it for closing.

Just as another anecdotal comment on how effective it is, I have it here in S. Indiana and it makes a significant difference. I keep the garage heated in the winter to 55f and even before I put the heater in temps were much higher in the garage then outside. I have the fiberglass and sealed the panels with the hvac foil tape on the open gap side toward the rail.. You noted you pulled the insulation so there was a larger airgap on the back side (side pointing outward) because of looks. I would suggest closing that gap as its going to get super heated and unless each panel was sealed that heat will leak out with convection and reduce the overall effectiveness. I also installed a radiant barrier in the attic on the joints and it has reduced mid-day heat soak up there from 115-125 to 95 to 115 on really hot days at the ceiling above the insulation, below I haven't see the ceiling drywall above 87 so a good radiant barrier does work when properly installed.

We live in Florida and we have an attached garage. Our Garage was like an oven. So we had an insulation company come in and blow R30 Insulation into our attic in the garage. Then we had them insulate the Garage Door as well. They gave us Double Bubble Insulation for our Garage Door. I watched them install the Insulation to our Garage Door and it was a Two Step Process. They cut out the panels just like you did, except they had to cut twice for each panel. We have a Two Car Garage. They first put the Insulation facing the Garage Door first. Then they came back and put on the nice looking white side over the insulation. It took Two people almost Two Hours to install the Insulation on our Garage Door. They charged us $ 225.00 to Insulate our Garage Door. My Wife and I feel our Garage is much more comfortable than it was before.

Great idea, I will do it to my garage. It has hit 115 degrees in my garage on a hot summer day. When I insulated the roof, it stayed cooler, but it took longer to cool down overnight. Not a surprise.

I would for sure do it again. It still gets hot. But, it is more comfortable than before. I have had to make some adjustments to my behavior though. When it starts getting cooler in the evenings it will capture the heat in the garage. So, as the sun goes down we open the garage to let the heat out. There is some tradeoff. Thank you Chip!

Use a can of spray foam to fill in the vertical metal pieces for more insulation. Then put some white vinyl floor tape on those pieces to block conduction heat transfer between metal and air. Tape along the inward facing horizontal edges of the door panels should also help with that. Easy enough to do a test in summer by applying the tape to part of the door then using an infra-red non-contact thermometer to check temperature VS un-taped - with the afternoon sun shining on the door.

Fellow Texan here.. house built in 96. My garage doors also face west. Whoever built the house went ahead and finished the garage we have sheetrock on the garage walls was painted with the primer and smooth down you can't even tell where the joints are so they did a good job with that. The problem is with the garage doors facing west that means I have a Southern exposure as well. That part of the wall in the garage is not insulated at all behind the sheetrock! So in order to insulate my garage I have to take that sheetrock down but fiberglass behind there put the vapor barrier behind there then put the sheetrock back up. Why on Earth when they built this house that they didn't spend an extra hundred bucks to put a fiberglass mats in there I will never know

The air gap will come into play when measuring your temperatures. Also if your exterior wall and attic is insulated this will really make a big difference. As far as acoustical, the closed cell foam does not perform as well as fiberglass because the glass absorption rate of the glass.

Absolutely it does make a difference in Florida. I added an insulation kit to my garage and it made a huge difference in the temperature swings. Yes it does make the door heavier. After my spring broke, the door tech installed a heavier duty spring and adjusted everything. No issues after that.

I was told by a home inspector to remove the styrofoam insulation because it isn’t fire retardant so a risk because of the car, mower etc in there. Are those panels treated in any way? If not your insurance may not cover it if something happens.

That is one really really good question that I never thought of. I did check out the Lowes website and in the product description there is nothing about it. But, the question gets asked in their Q&A section. Someone answered that they are fire retardant. Another answered that he tried to catch a few pieces of scrap on fire and it was very difficult and they would self extinguish. I live in Hawaii and just purchased 1 1/2 foam with mylar on one side and cut it and put it in a few years ago. My garage is considerably cooler now because the sun beats on the door all afternoon making the garage extremely hot. I have noticed a 14 degree difference in the garage after the installation.

You need insulation in the walls and roof as well. Adding insulation just to the door is not going to help that much. When building a house, ask the builder to add insulation to the exterior walls and inside the garage attic. It doesn't cost very much. Then have the builder drywall the garage. Put a heater and A/C unit inside the garage and you are all set for winter and summer. We have done that to our garage and it makes a nice living and storage space that can be used all year. I put in tables and chairs, a treadmill, a television, and a refrigerator, and some storage cabinets for our tools. Our crawl space is where I store all of the stuff that usually is put in the garage. This is a great space for those of us in the South who do not have basements.

I havent fully watched the video yet but the proper thing to do if you do this is you need to weigh your door and get the properly calibrated springs. NO OPENER is actually meant to lift the weight of a door especially in residential application. The opener is just meant to be a guide and the springs do the lifting. Springs also tend to need tension adjustments over time. Even if the opener will put in extra work and actually lift the door your opener will prematurely wear out. Get the proper springs for your door. Maybe your current spring/springs will be fine and jus need more tension. Depends how much weight it adds Sincerely, commercial and industrial overhead door installer

The sun travels from east to west by way of the south. The R-value like R-8 means it takes 8 hours for 1BTU to travel through 1 square foot of the insulation when there is a 1 degree difference in temp from one side of insulation to the other. If you were heating for cooling your garage It will simply slow down the transmission of heat from your garage to the outdoors or heat from the outdoors into your garage.

Yes, it’s probably best that you have an air gap between the door and any rigid insulation on the door. You need to seal the perimeter of the door to get the full effect of adding the insulation. You a,ready dumped two hundred into it, you might as well dump another Ben Franklin and get a new bottom seal, a set of those wave shaped lower door roller track sections that push the door outward when it’s all the way down because the leaks in the track line up with the rollers when the door is down so in the last 6” of coming down, all of the rollers hit the wave sections and it pushes the door outward, so it will press firmly against the weather stripping they sell. It’s the typical weather strip for garage doors that lays flat against the face of the door plus another layer of foam more similar to a typical door weather strip that will compress and form a nice snug seal when the door is closed and pushed out against the stripping. Works really damn good and seals the massive gaps in typical doors plus it keeps the door from rattling around in the tracks when the wind blows.

When I built my house I had all walls around the garage (800sqft) with bats and ceiling with blown wool and an insulated garage door installed. I have a 2 ton A/C and keep it at 78 year round. Costs me about an extra $20-$30 during the 100 degree Texas summer. It faces south!!!!

A number of factors affects how drastic the improvement might be: 1) current door construction (wood vs sheet steel vs fiberglass), 2) orientation (how much direct sun/shade does it get?), 3) how leaky is your garage with the door down? Are there drafts coming through from side doors, windows, etc...? The most improvement will be felt by someone with a sheet metal door that gets direct sun in morning &/or evening, and the garage air is fairly static.

@@justinjimenez6960adding on to this, according to others (I have yet to test this, it’ll be a little bit before I can) the results are more noticeable if you are actively heating/cooling your garage. This makes sense to me cause really all insulation is doing is delaying temperature transfers between 2 sides. So if you don’t cool your garage, it’ll warm up with the outside temp, just more slowly. But if you do cool it, the cool inside air will “fight” with the hot outside air “within” the insulation. At least thats how I imagine it. And this is more efficient for you when you actively cool because the temperature transfer is slower (vs not having insulation), thus keeping your inside air a more comfortable temp.

Looks great! I split my foam panels and put in bottom half then top half (or whatever ratio you choose!) Fits much tighter. Use liquid nails so the panel doesn't pop out at the butt joint.

Adding insulation can definitely help but remember that extra weight typically means you need a different set of springs to properly balance the door. An adjustment is ok temporarily but in most cases its important to up the IPPT of your spring combination for proper balance and longevity of the opener.

Add a little tension to take up the weight and let it rock and when your springs break keep in mind to let your repair man you need to up your springs because you insulated the doors and most installers can tell when you have done this type job anyway

I did this in my garage about 10 years ago. all three bays. Face west also. Makes a big difference in the afternoons mainly. Also in Winter it keeps the garage warmer. Not much but it keeps out the direct cold some, probably about 15* difference perhaps more when the wind is bad. Plus it deadens the sound of the doors as they close and it really doesn't add much weight so it's pretty reasonable for the cost to get a more comfortable env.

I have insulated the same garage door. I placed the aluminum reflective (purchased the panel with aluminum reflective) inside the the door to reflect the heat out in the hotter states, and placed the aluminum reflective inside to keep the heat inside in the colder states.

Here in Glendale Arizona when it hit 119 the Styrofoam i put up helped out and i picked up a evap cooler i used the blue Styrofoam i use 4 4×8 sheets way cheaper then the 90 dollar kit that only has 8 in a pack i also made a window that opens inward to allow hot air out

I did this in Montana, with a garage that is on the lower level under the dining room and embedded in the hillside. Ceiling of the garage is heavily insulated, walls are concrete. No direct sun on it. It's not really "warmer" - the garage stabilizes at the temperature of the dirt it's embedded in as heat transfers through the concrete walls - but you can work near the door and not feel like the heat is being sucked out of you by the cold metal, and there isn't a cold draft flowing down the inside of the door. Increased comfort counts.

I used full-sized, foil-wrapped panels and cut them to fit, then used glue to fasten to doors. Florida, facing west and my garage door is painted (HOA conformity here.) a darker brown. Since the heat does not penetrate into the garage the 'skin' of the door becomes VERY hot. It does fade the paint more quickly but then that means what I did works. Less expensive than your technique. Managing insolation (correct spelling) in a hot climate is the best way to minimize your A/C costs. I also placed an insulation blanket on my hot water heater (This was a fiberglass kit). I figure if I save a buck a month, I'm making money after 7 years. It's at least a fifteen percent annual return and that it is consistent makes all of my 401K 'investment strategies' look weak.

We are getting a 2 car metal garage door installed. We opted to get the maximum insulation option. We live in the Northwest so Winters are cold, but we can also get hot Summers. In 2021 we hit over 100 in June. Right now August 2nd we are finally out of 3 digit temps. Our door we currently own is the original 1965 ranch style home wooden door. It is in really good shape. We just wanted a new insulated door. We are anxious to see what a difference it makes? We changed out our old 1965 wood garage(people)door(not connecting to house, but direct to yard) to an insulated metal door(did that ourselves--including ripping out casing and putting in new--leveling it/shims and installing new moulding and weather stripping--painted the door) and we just love it! It made a big difference in keeping the cold and heat out. We hope the new garage door will do the same. We ordered it in January 2022 and they only recently told us a couple months ago that the door was being built. We still have to schedule installation once they(professional garage door company)receive the door and inspect it and then they can schedule installation. It was not that much more money to order it with the maximum amount of insulation. Trick is the delay in getting the door... But we are patient. I am real tired of sanding, patching, and painting that old wood door... I won't miss that. 😊

@@DadsGarageDIY Well at least you have some. Our old wood door has none and we have been living with it for 20+ years. It is so expensive to fix up an older home. We have been doing it in stages. My husband wanted it insulated. He thought about just basic insulation and I said go for the max as it was only an extra $200-$300. We have cold Winters sometimes in Spokane and the Summers can get really hot. We are wondering how much of a difference it will make? Currently it got up to 92 today, but it cooled down 10 degrees. Last June we had days of 100+ degree heat. Normally June is in the 80's. I hope it works. And the windows we chose should help with lighting. 😊

The insulation does add weight to the door, it depends on the size of the door, looks like he's got a 16x7,the weight will actually make the opener work harder, in a perfect world you would change the springs for the proper weight, but you can add a half or full turn to the spring, some 16s have a single spring, some have 2 springs,depending on the brand,looks like he didn't add the end or center stile foam either.

*Please do not attempt to adjust your springs on your own, my son works for an overhead door company, installing and repairing garage doors. Those springs are deadly. I’m sure a lot of people do this without issues, but let’s just say “Lucky” a know it all 45 year old co-worker of my sons is now referred to as “Lefty”, and keeps the warehouse organized now.

I had my garage door double springed before adding the insulation. Even though I insulated with essentially the same system as this video, I wanted the piece of mind that it would not overtax the garage door opener. Additionally, double springing makes your automatic opener work much less hard and can extend its life.

100%. And one day I will be gone or he will be on his own and he needs to know how to do things. Joshua is my buddy. He is almost always there in the garage when a project is going on. He really lose tools and always craving to learn how to build and fix things. In my shed assembly video he was right there for the whole thing and couldn't have done it without him. Thank you ry ry.
