Jazz person here! While just like in Classical, time signatures can be vague and subjective in notation, interpretation and application, generally************************* what a tune is "In" will mostly refer to the BASS player of the band or combo (and is mostly analogous to Classical Conducting). For Instance: "In 4" is walking with a quarter note on every beat, 4 beats to a bar. "In 3" meaning the same thing, 3 beats to a bar. However, "In 2" gets tricky communicating with non-Jazz musicians. We understand it as still 4 beats to a bar, but the Bass Player walks in Half Notes. Often the Head (especially for older standards) is played In 2, the Solos In 4. Interestingly, In 3, there exists a common metric modulation that where the Drums and Bass will play In 2; 2 evenly spaced beats to the bar. Now what about "Jazz Waltz," which is distinct from being In 3? For Example in "Someday My Prince Will Come" as played by Miles Davis, on the Head the Bassist will (generally) play Dotted Half Notes; In 1. But on the solo sections, In 3. All this to Say at 2:16, yes, ChatGPT is technically correct: being In 1 (in a Jazz Waltz) is meant to clear the air so the melody can feel more free!

Thank you so much for your thoughtful answer! always love hearing from fellow musicians from the non-classical world, jazz is like a whole other (lovely) universe to me so its nice to get some inside info about it.

Anna! I've missed your posts! This was fun. Put the questions you cut out in another video, why waste footage? How would you have scheduled the 3-day rehearsal instead?

Thank you, glad I was fun! Depends on the orchestra, but definitely no warm up and no sectionals :) In reality with a prof orchestra you probably wouldn't have 3 days just for a mozart symphony, you would also have to squeeze in other pieces like a concerto and an overture as well...So id probably attempt to get most of it read on the first day and then analyse what parts need more looking into and re-asses for the next days. More experienced conductors would probably be able to predict this (I've assisted conductors that new to the exact minutes how long it would take them to rehearse a movement or section with that orchestra ahead of starting).

Have it instruct you on how it would conduct a specific orchestral composition. Provide it with the full score and request a detailed explanation of how it would direct the ensemble. Maybe play the part of a young naive musician that wants to be a self taught conductor

Liked this video! I asked it about contemporary composition and it (I think it was Bard actually) told me about minimalism of the 60s (!). I sent it a quite angry suggestion, in a nutshell, that it should keep up with the times and learn more about female, non binary, and composers from other places of the world. Don't know who would see it though 🤔

Just a note: chat gbt is extremely inaccurate on basically all subjects. When I first tried it I asked it 5 fairly common questions that could have been answered using the internet in about 20 seconds each and it got all of them TOTALLY wrong. A-L-L of them. Never used it again. It’s interesting but not useful.
