Often the easiest thing is to exclude the game folder or data files from AV Realtime scanning. Older games are often loading only small chunks of data irrespective of memory size.

In the days when Cpu's had a single core Norton used to drag the system down more effectively than the tories ever could, but not so much now... but saying that I remember back in the day when my colleagues were ridiculing me, I had a firewall, did regular virus scans as well as having a regular backup schedule, the attitude back them was ' there's nothing worth stealing on my computer anyway' I was security conscious because I was used to running a BBS 24/7 for many years before the internet was a popular thing.. so I was already fully aware of the importance of security -- how times have changed since the 90's

That’s not how you test if an AV slows down your computer… Full system scan are always ran in a lower priority. If you want to test the impact of an AV you have to run an app while RTP in on and make sure it hasn’t scanned it before. Because the AV won’t scan the same file twice if it’s unchanged and its the launch will be delayed by the AV the time needed for the scan to be finished, if it’s less than 8Mb (the usual default size set).

In 22 years I've never use antivirus software, but I use Linux as my OS. I do use a firewall however. Using antivirus on a Linux computer is like wearing a helmet outside because you might get hit by falling debri from a plane. In Windows however using antivirus is like using an umbrella in a rainstorm - necessary.
@Britec09
@Britec09 Жыл бұрын
Well your 22 years has not made you understand that Windows has billions of users which is being attacked everyday. Linux on the other hand has such small user base, its hardly worth cybercriminals time to target them.
@jamesnoel2666
@jamesnoel2666 Жыл бұрын
@@Britec09 what you don't understand is that Linux has billions of users which includes you. The internet is mostly run on linux servers; every time you use a search engine you are using a Linux supercomputer. Every time you use the internet you are using Linux servers. It is only on the home computers that Windows has more users. Even so, the reason Windows is such a target for viruses is that it is poorly designed. Universities use linux as their servers behind the Windows lab computers because it is built to be hostile towards viruses. Antivirus on Windows is like a safe door on a tent. Linux is built more like a castle - hard to get into from all directions. The much wider use of Linux outside of home use should attract more incentive to write viruses. You lack knowledge on the wider use of Linux in the wider world. Windows is a virus magnet because it is crap. You depend on Linux every day. Being able to have it on a home computer for free is just a bonus.
@jawannacuputty
@jawannacuputty Жыл бұрын
What your limited exposure to Linux has not let you understand is that Linux has billions of users. It is the backbone of the internet, running most of the servers. It is therefore a bigger prise for virus writers than Windows. Linux is less prone to virus attacks because it is robustly built from the ground up to be secure. Windows is the main target because of its poor design. Why attack a castle when you can attack a circus tent. Your lack of exposure to computer operating systems is showing.
@jawannacuputty
@jawannacuputty Жыл бұрын
Britec09 FYI, Linux is used to power 96.3% of the world’s top web servers. Windows runs only 1.9% of them. Which do you think is the biggest t target for virus writers?

Geez, doesn’t anybody use Norton? I’ve used it’s all-in-one Norton Security Ultimate for 20+ years, Firewall,Antivirus, Blocking system, and so much more in the suite. Using that along with its utility companion- Utilities Ultimate, which has every feature/tool you’d need. I never put these on “automatic” anything, I prefer to manually update/run scans/ check out D/L’d stuff. I would have to say, after many years of computer testing and such, that I would endorse Eset as a very reliable #2 system. My laptop is just 3 years old and has an i3 , quad core,at 1.8 Ghz, 12 G Ram and a recently installed 500 G SSD. Runs great, no slow down of operation that I find. I’m an MCP with a bit of experience and learning all the time. Keep up the good fight. 👍🇨🇦

ESET has always been the best when it comes to this. Really baffling how it outperforms Defender, which is made by the same company that made the OS. How about the privacy aspect of antivirus software? Tbh I'd rather have just Microsoft have my data than Microsoft plus whatever antivirus I have. I have used ESET for almost 2 decades and never had a single problem but I remember turning off some years ago the SSL protection which exchanges the default website certificates with ESET's own. Kinda works like a man in the middle attack except that it's obviously not an "attack". Another is probably just used for the internet depedent side of the AV but I also made changes to the sent data settings even if they say it's all anonymous and encrypted. Obviously nothing really is private in the internet nowadays but that kinda made me hesitant to use 3rd party AVs so I'm currently using Defender for my newly built machine and testing if I personally need ESET again. Seems to me you are exchanging a bit of your privacy for a better security. Depends on the user but I'd say it's well worth it for people not used to modern tech.

I dunno about virus software slowing down my Alienware 18 laptop -- if it does it's negligible -- but I can tell you what does eat up its CPU usage: Dell's own software. I actually had to uninstall a whole bunch of Dell's software in order to get my Dell computer to run properly! I couldn't watch KZbin videos, for example, on it because the CPU was hitting 100% usage so often the video and audio kept stalling. It's running perfectly okay now. Thanks Dell -- last time I'm buying any of your computers.

It's not just all the layers of protection, but what about all those definition updates filling up the hdd over time? If people are having problems with system resources, it's more a problem of Windows 11 rather than anything else working in the background, I've noticed, since the last update, Windows 11 is taking a lot longer for things in the background. Also, when you switch the computer off, it takes twice as long, in fact, three times as long as it used to before this last update. It definitely seems to be gathering data.
