In Germany (and I believe in many other European countries) most children (mostly girls as I recall) first learned about the comics through a magazine called "The W.I.T.C.H. magazine" where every month they would release a new magazine that would contain a portion of the graphic novels story- along with typical 2000s girly stuff like fashion tips, quizzes, posters I believe. And it was AWESOME! I had a couple of editions of the magazine until I lost interest and moved on to "Young Adult" magazines. Looking back, I figure I'd never be interested in ever reading those again- but if someone had a W.I.T.C.H. comic or magazine edition from the time I read it I would be EXCITED! Speaks volumes for the world and the characters I think.

It is an absolute gem. I SCREAMED when I saw this notification. I love how the graphic novels have these characters with difficult parents as well as being difficult people at times. They make mistakes and they get mad at each other. Three of my favourite moments were: 1. Irma learning the difference between wanting to apologizing to feel better and wanting to apologize to let someone else forgive and feel better. This happens when she publicly humiliates a boy from school. 2. Taranee and her mother's relationship in general. I love the portrayal of this relationship so fucking much. It's so damn realistic. In fact all parent and daughter relationship. 3. Cornelia and Will's relationship. I know it's too specific but I loved their conflicts? Especially with the whole reveal of Phobos's sister. :D sorry lol I just LOVE THIS STORY SO MUCH! god damn. I wish people more knew about it. // Also the stuff I mentioned is based off the show, I need to catch up with the graphic novels

I always preferred this series because of the aesthetic and character depth. I loved all of the girls but really gravitated toward Taranee. I was so happy to see the Black girl get to be the smart one in a series, especially one with magical girls. Unfortunately, I only ever got to experience the TV show. By the time I learned there were comics, they had become really hard to find in the US. I will definitely be trying to get my hands on the new comic bind-ups. They look beautiful!!!!

Rereading the series, I do like how the girls are pretty layered, despite starring in a comic for pre-teens. Most female characters aimed for this audience are often pretty cookie-cutter, but the WITCH girls have genuine flaws. They could get downright nasty at times, but that makes their moments of bravery and kindness stand out more.

I think the plots go fast because originally, this was published as a monthly magazine, so it would make more sense to have a plot develop through a few instalments each instead of it lasting half a year or more. I have the magazines from 1 to 87 I think, in the middle of the "new power" arch, that's when they stopped releasing it in Mexico. Also the magazines (at least here in Mexico) had a space where letters and drawings from fans, sections that would display some quizzes, how to draws and more info about the girls (like images of their bedrooms, closets, family etc), but as the history progressed, the comic portion of the magazines considerably shrank in size and more "girly" things would take over more than half of the pages, they would talk about fashion, makeup and boys (obviously the only things young girls think about). It was sad watching a comic I enjoyed through most of my childhood become another teenager magazine, and I never knew how the story ended.

I loved aspects of the nerissa arc but I feel the same, there were a *lot* of pacing issues. I do love the role Yan Lin plays though (I won't mention how her role evovles just in case it wasn't featured in the first 9 volumes)! Personally I would say to stop reading once arc 5 ends (I think that means 2 more arcs after this one) because the writing quality drops a lot beyond that point. If I'm not wrong, a lot of the original writing staff and artists left because of Disney's interference, but you'll have to factcheck me on that!

^^ Nice to see this series finally getting some recognition - I was pretty much the only person in my (small) realm that had ever read it (and I am a boy), and it was excluded from all the nostalgic retrospectives here on KZbin until now. 9:16 That's pretty much the norm in any long-running comic series - different artists work on individual issues so they can keep the release dates. 15:41 Ooooh, that's going to get even better once you get to the Endarno-arc :D 21:20 I actually don't mind that this arc went only for three issues, because the AD's had already caused enough trouble, and it helped the girls' character development big time... but they could have had another complication or two to wring a little more out of it (maybe one of their villains manipulates one of the AD's into becoming a magical being themselves and settle their life's purpose on some evil scheme...) But either way, that arc was still very intense (though Ari was indeed not the most realized villain). Sadly, the problems you're mentioning will not really go away and eventually get bigger, so I'd recommend you to only read the next arc (maybe the one after that), but stop once you get to the New Powers Era.

This video makes me so happy that there's someone else out there that loved the W.I.T.C.H. graphic novels as much as I did (and still do)! I was a lot like you, I bought every graphic novel that was released in English and had longed for so long to finally finish the Nerissa arc after being left off on a cliffhanger. I spent way too much time as a 12 year old trying to find translated scans of the comics on the internet so I could properly finish the story and probably gave the family computer a bunch of viruses trying to do it lol, so when I saw that Yen Press was re-printing the series in 2017, I legit screamed.

This made me want to re-read these so badly!! I only wish they published new bundle editions in Italy as well! Over here they came out in monthly installments, and I'm missing most of the early chapters ones (which tbh were the best ones). Btw, I don't know if the 20 US volumes follow every single arc, but in my opinion the last good one is the sixth, after which most of the original demographic had aged out of middle school and wasn't really interested, and the storylines became a lot more random and juvenile :/
@Lindibell3 жыл бұрын
@@FullofLit Yes! For a while each issues had the main story chapter + a little slice of life story at the end. There were also quizzes & "lifestyle" segments of sorts targeted to young girls. Each issue also came with a "gift", like a pencil case or keychain, stuff like that. It was very well known & really successful in the early 2000s! But its popularity went down really quickly after 08, which I think is when the last generation that was reading it from early enough to be invested aged out of the demographic. Shortly after they dropped the story arcs and the self-contained storylines were...well, bad.

Oh man, that takes me back! I was OBSESSED with W.I.T.C.H., and I was lucky enough that many many of its issues were published in Greece. I spent about five years patiently waiting for the month to end and the new issue to come out, until I started feeling that the writing quality was not as I liked it and I had to let it go by the end of the next arc after the last one mentioned in this video. I did read some of the rest a couple years ago (and re-read the older ones, and just like you I was getting flashbacks of how and when I read some of them when I was little) and... I was quite right in deciding that the series was not for me anymore, lol. Oh, man, I remember my friend and I got obssesed with this series as well, but we would buy them like magazines that came with little presents (erasers, bead bracelets, even one with an actual heart of Kandrakar... although we never got it because the magazines with those we got them in resell and didn't had any of those perks) and there came in a time in which it was too expensive to buy more so I always wondered how the rest of the story goes. By then I realized "hey, internet, I can see comics there with no issues!" so I read all the numbers, from start to finish... and boy, do I almost regret it because there is kind of a soft reboot that happens that makes everything worse. They destroy the character of Matt, they change the personality of Taranee, which in turn changes Irma too and Will is kinda an ass. The only character that remains the same are Cornelia and Hay Lin, but there is also these plotlines and arcs that are just straight up weird. At some point the whole thing goes "fuck it, now magic is something some kids are born with just because and your job as guardians now is make a little Harry Pottersque school of magic for these kids on this magical bus", because I guess HP's movies came out at that time.

I loved witch as a kid and had all the magazines as the comic was published monthly in a girls magazine with other things like fashion and horoscopes in my country, but I threw them all out when I was a teen cos I thought they were childish along with all my other comics (biggest life regret 😩) and spent years trying to find the original print volumes to little success as they got super expensive the later the volume. So I gave up and never realised they were back in print 😄 so happy such nostalgia

Coming here in 2024 for the nostalgia and still being so sad that the DID NOT finish the reprint and we, AGAIN, will not find out the end because it simply will not be translated AGAIN.
