Do one for software licenses, would be interesting to see differences between something like bsd and gpl.
@swordkorn4 жыл бұрын
GPL effectively calls for everything registered under the license to be fully available, warts and all, for anyone to view, use, change or rewrite. It's effectively a system that simultaneously encourages collaboration between software developers to improve code and programs for end users to enjoy and for no fee of course, whilst effectively stripping it out from under your feet entirely with no say in it. BSD's license is a little bit more of a grey area. BSD is free in the sense of go download it and install it and use it. No one will stop you doing so. But if you're plan is to use BSD for commercial purposes then the BSD guys expect contributions back into BSD be that through some custom or unique system they can freely use with now zero restrictions (ZFS... look into that if you're interested...) or financial funding to support the maintenance of the source code. Sony and the Playstation OS is a good example of that. If you want more information about BSD I recommend Bryan Lunduke talking to one of the key BSD guys here on KZbin. As for GPL... just look around GitHub at some larger free to use software projects. You'll see what I mean. Hope that helps!

@Jared Maddox : It’s all in the fine print. If you ever read through the developer terms and conditions on the GPL it states a lot about the source code having to be freely available for the purposes of collaboration and or cross platform deployment. On paper it’s more to sound like let’s be open and honest with everything and allow everyone to view it as they deem worthy. In practice that can result in the project spiralling out of control with another key individual working so hard on it that they effectively take ownership of the project and you get elbowed out. I’m not saying that BSD’s approach is any better and I’m also not saying that the system as a whole is fundamentally flawed but it’s swings and roundabouts. Do you sit back and watch the corporate fat cats take away our basic privacy rights or do we stand up and say no even if it’s in these small ways and attempt to get to a better place with technology where no one dictates how you use your machines or what you’re allowed to do with them (not talking criminality in that but hopefully you know what I mean)

@@van-hieuvo8208 Yes, you can in theory charge for free software, but is not a very liable business model as the license gives your customers the right to pass it on, so they could always undercut you. The net effect is that GPL effectively forces the software to also be free as in beer, even if it only literally forces it to be free as in freedom. Contrary to this is the BSD license, which is much easierly abused, and sold for instance for Sony Playstation without contributing anything back the people they copied from.

I finally switched Windows 10 for Ubuntu as a development environment. After a couple of days, I have to say that that Linux-based workflow is just so much better when you are doing anything other than gaming. Doing many things conveniently through the terminal is better in any way, compared to the clunky Windows-way of downloading a bunch of installers to get the software you want installed. I might experiment more with different distributions in the future, but as I have more experience with Ubuntu, it felt like the right place to start from. Of course when I game occasionally, Windows is still the way to go. For that I have Ubuntu and Windows on separate disks, so I can just easily choose which one to boot when powering my PC.

One thing this video doesn't cover and is often missunderstood about the GPL: if you modify a piece of code that you got under a GPL license, you are not required to distribute it. The license defines requirements on how you can distribute your modified code, but there is still the option to not distribute it at all. Many medium and large companies do in-house development that doesn't get distributed outside the company, and that's perfectly fine with the GPL. Such users get to integrate (at their own effort and cost) improvements and innovations from the community into their build, but by not releasing the code they miss on the oportunity to have the community improve upon it. This trade-off actually makes sense in some scenarios, mainly when dealing with very purpose-specific developments, which can be quite common in many such companies.

Is there really a Linux, Antarctica? Sounds plausible. Only nerds live there.

The odd Linux from LTT video is great. An interview with the two most famous people named Linus would be ideal!

Very cool! I sometimes speak with people about free software alternatives, who dont know or understand open source licenses at all. This is a nice short video for such people to watch if they are interested in the topic. At some point most of them say things like "but if everyone would start using the software XYZ, they could shut it down or make it expensive or control their users or spy on them just like any other company". No they can't.

I wanted to ditch windows for Linux.. but when I saw that linux has higher system requirements to run then I went back to windows, lol
@agentqowalski37454 жыл бұрын
This is absolutely not true. My system takes 200-300MB RAM and like 0% CPU usage without any programs running.
@user-yp6kk9lx7k4 жыл бұрын
@@agentqowalski3745 how can you say it's not true when you can easily go on linux official website and check the system requirements. then you can go on windows official website and check the system requirements aswell. after that you'll easily understand that windows requires LESS system requirements in order to run. Also no linux runs with 200mb of ram. the minimum ever recorded was 500 so stop lying.

@@user-yp6kk9lx7k You should stop giving a shit with without knowing anythink. You can use a wm with anydistro from minimal with 50-100mb usage at boot.

@@user-yp6kk9lx7k Give me a link to these requirements, I'm really curious where you got them from. I just checked my laptop and it takes 283MB of RAM in a TTY without a x session or anything running.

I use Linux mint on a touchscreen notebook 95% of the day. For monitoring multiple web server and VPS. Learning aircrack-ng and python is a skill everyone should have. Python to automate all your task. And aircrack-ng is just well... free wifi anywhere.

I would like to note that the "Free" in Free and Open Source software doesn't mean free as in free beer. While it is kind of included in there it actually means free as in freedom. Kind of sucks that in english those are the same words

Technically Torvalds didn't decide on his own to register the Linux trademark, it was recommended to him by other members of the Linux community as some companies had started to use it in ways they didn't approve of (I don't remember the exact circumstances, the misuse might not have even started yet, it might have been a preventative measure). Torvalds was reluctant but was eventually talked into it.
