All the comments taking about how jo failed to realize he was using motion controls haven't considered that jo was definitely not using "thumbs up grip" as the game expects, so he was playing with motion controls AND each hand's controls rotated 90 degrees in opposite directions. ARMS is such a weird “underrated yet at the same time assessed very accurately” game
@matthewmazzatto80032 жыл бұрын
Unique and interesting mechanics mixed with pretty good graphics and net code. The issue is that every character plays in nearly the exact same way. There's more variety in the Smash 64 cast (everyone besides DK has the same Nair) than in ARMS. Many characters also have super boring personalities, so few of them are memorable. You could've put any of the following characters (Spring-Man, Ribbon Girl, Ninjara, Kid Cobra, or Twintelle) into Smash, and they'd all play nearly the same as Min Min. ARMS needed more differentiation in its cast to be truly great.
@TripleSakaTrip2 жыл бұрын
@@matthewmazzatto8003 How are the personalities of the characters boring, the characters and overall presentation of the game are absolutely highlights. And honestly every character plays quite differently too, even ones that share some abilities like Spring Man, Max Brass, and Springtron have enough differences to warrant approaching the game at different angles. If anything, the main weakness of the game is the core gameplay, which can get very repetitive and doesn’t allow for a large enough amount of complex strategies.
@matthewmazzatto80032 жыл бұрын
@@TripleSakaTrip The gameplay being too standardized across the cast is the main issue. But we've seen all these character types before as well. Tell me how characters like Spring-Man and Ribbon Girl go beyond their stereotypical designs.
@TripleSakaTrip2 жыл бұрын
@@matthewmazzatto8003 Well I’d argue that with characters like those two, it’s more about what they contribute to the worldbuilding than the actual characters themselves. Like Ribbon Girl has had a big impact on characters like Mechanica and Biff. I’d also like to say that the characters in ARMS don’t really need to be all that deep, as long as they’re fun to look at and serve their purpose well, especially in a more kid friendly game. For example, Bowser is not a terribly complex character, but he serves his role as an antagonist very well and has a cool design so he’s very memorable. The same goes for the ARMS characters, most if not all of them have really cool designs, and their abilities fit their designs and/or backstories in interesting ways. Their unique designs go hand in hand with their gameplay. Lola Pop is a clown so her gimmick is about her inflating like a balloon. Ribbon Girl is a singer so she can use her high notes to control her air mobility. Et cetera. Cool character design.

How Coyle's levitation works is that she's basically always considered grounded, which is why she can shield and dash like that "in midair." I have a feeling you guys won't be playing this again or if you do it will be from the same session so this won't help, but just in case it does help: Jo, when playing with split joy-con you move by moving the controllers like they are joysticks, tilting them in the direction you want your character to move/dash You can also block by tilting them towards each other I believe

Good Vid. As someone having over 2,000 Hours in ARMS, and still making Guides about it. The best word I’d describe ARMS as is “misunderstood”. 🥊 Obviously it’s not for everyone (no game really is) but I feel most people go into it expecting it to be something else. They call it a “Fighting Game” then automatically compare it to other traditional FGs, but it’s not at all trying to be that. I liken it more to a Sports game, something like Tennis. Where the rules of the game are simple, but the depth comes in MASTERING your technique and all of the mechanics. People play 10 rounds, then say “Wow, that was just 10 rounds of the doing the same thing” same can be said about a Tennis game. You’re doing the same thing, and to some people that’s not flashy or engaging enough, which is fine, it may not catch you. But for those it does catch. They’re gonna want to keep getting better. Try more Fighters, try more and more Arms Combinations. Learn more about the deeper mechanics of the game…and trust me, there’s a LOT to learn if you actually wanted to break everything down. I could be here all day. But I digress. TLDR; It may not be for everyone, but it’s a game about mastering the complexities hiding behind the simplicity. Some may understand it, others may not, and that’s fine.
