Yeah, art doesn't have to be meaningful. It has to be expressive. And I love the way you express your art.

Art gives us a reason to be alive, slightly soothes or even terrorises our soul. So yes, it's undoubtedly meaningful for merely existing.

I'm currently trying to put together my art portfolio for college and have been diving into this deep hole of "my art is not special, it doesn't have enough meaning and that's why I haven't been winning any awards with my art whenever I try to enter them into competitions- it's just not good enough." I keep telling myself this over and over again and my self-confidence has dropped so much over the past few months and I've been completely in an art block as a result of it. And then I discovered your channel. Your art portfolio made me feel so inspired, for the first time in months, the second I set my eyes on it. Your ideas are just so creative, expressive, and even though you had mentioned some of your statements are exaggerated, I can still feel so much emotion and expression from your pieces. It made me want to pick up a pencil again and just... draw, rather than try to make something solely for the sake of it being meaningful to others. So thank you, if you ever read this, for reigniting my passion and making me remember why I love art so much in the first place. Have a wonderful day

I was JUST thinking about this. I feel like I’m just churning out art that doesn’t have a meaning for me, and I want to create something with more meaning, but I love your point that even paintings that seem simple and don’t have much thought behind them still hold a meaning, and that doesn’t need to be the point of the piece

I totally agree with you. Just because I like to paint it doesn't mean that I ought to spend hours staring at a canvas to think of something meaningful. Painting a flower, realising that this flower was captured because of its beauty at the moment, is meaningful and not less than paintings that need to be explained to you. Painting is meaningful itself. It doesn't need to have a hidden message to be important and beautiful!

art never has to be meaningful, too many art snobs think it should have a deep meaning but art sometimes is just a pretty picture and sometimes it does have a meaning for the audience and sometimes the meaning is only meant for the artist

I agree. I love making character designs, but none of them really represent some deeper meaning about myself or society. It just brings me joy to see my own character, with so much thought put into them, finished and ready to be put into a story or world where I can just be creative.

Sometimes I feel like I create meaningless art. Whenever I do anything artsy - drawing, painting, carving.... I do it just because I love to move my hands. To create something that looks pretty is a plus. The thrill of getting the shape of someone’s nose correct, to push through and finish something, but all without some meaning behind it.

It has to be comprehensible to be art, otherwise it's just pretty wall decoration. Scribbling in a notebook isn't a novel; in order for something to be a work of art the creator has to use a language that can be understood by the audience and in the visual arts that means it has to look like something in reality. Art therefore is the arrangement of abstractions (paint strokes or words) for the purpose of rearranging reality into a new perceivable or mental image.

That's what has rubbed me the wrong way with all the explanations of your artworks. In my opinion, art is a creation that invokes an emotion, idea, or action in a viewer. I feel like telling people the meaning of art takes away from the beauty of it. The beauty in that every person can derive a different meaning from a piece and it is still valid. Obviously it is fine to explain how you yourself sees an artwork, but it can sometimes allow others to interpret your words as a definite declaration on the meaning of your art. I love your art and your videos, and this could just be how I see art, maybe I'm wrong, but I feel that this enterpretation of art is what you were talking about in this video.

interesting... now I'm gonna watch this on mute and then play it again with sound haha. I guess that's something different between video & museum presentation. I personally like knowing what the artist was intending while creating the piece, and still think people can have their own takeaways.

Could you please film longer sequences? I could much more enjoy your process of painting. Longer sequences and the impression is calmer (fitting better to your calm and soft voice), more meditative and we could learn more. In this case the meaning of the picture would be completly irrelevant anyway. I like it very much that you film so close to the canvas and brush, to learn and enjoy the ductus. Thank you very much.
