Thanks for your brief comment about checking every 12 to 15 minutes when on watch. That is the interval I have chosen. But I have wondered if I was correct. Your comment gave me a little assurance. Close to shore or in a commercial lane - 12 minutes and sometimes less. Over 150 NM out and not in a shipping lane - 15 minutes.

Minor point from a racing sailor, when using your tension guage, you are supposed to put it on the shroud at approx face height. When you had it on some of the shrouds you were right beside the turnbuckle so you get the wrong reading

Loos Pro Gauge: Tip: it works on deflecting the wire to measure tension. So, the closer you are to the end of the wire, the less accurate you are. When you were measuring the backstay, the gauge was too close to the terminal. Try to get it as far up from the terminal as you can and still read it for accurate measurements. Looks like you had the idea down when you moved to the shrouds as you had it above your head and we know at your height, that is a long way from the terminal. Fair winds and following seas!

I have to say very nice videos 👍 Isabella is absolutely adorable. One thing that I found makes wiring lasta lott longer is using optiseal terminals with a dab of rtv on the wires just before crimping. The wet rtv will move out of the way and still let the electricity flow but will seal it from the eliminates, and then the heat shrink on the terminal will add the extra. Never had a wire fail to corrosion when done that way, and I live in the pnw!

FYI Furuno and Max Sea have had the networking capability that you featured today since 2010 or so. This has allowed lap top connectivity at the Nav station to all navigation data including radar. Equally important is the fact that the laptop is using the same charting as the chart plotter at the helm which would have avoided your need to use Open CPN on the laptop. When you purchase charts for your Furuno chart plotter you automatically get the same charts for your laptop at no extra cost. This allows your routes and waypoints to be made at the comfort of the nav station using your laptop and when complete these routes and waypoints are automatically available at the helm for your chart plotter and auto pilot. Garmin has many good features but I'm surprised you didn't include Furuno's abilities.

I love the content. I have been watching half a dozen sailing channels since the beginning of the pendemic. You videos are fast moving up my must see list. I have seen the quality of your videos evolve and now I don't dare look away in fear I might miss somthing. You crammed a lot into todays video that I have not seen in other places. Things I picked up today might seem simple to some but where you hid the vice, rig tuning and the info on the advancements using AI stand out. I've been a flight instructor for 35 years and can say you have the knack for teaching. Kudos!!!❤

AI is based on models. Just like climate change, weather forcast, election predictions and even the stock market. Jordan, you said it correctly, life on the ocean is more predictable than in the old days. Sure. However, old sailors made decisions on gut feeling. They were good at that. My fear is that many sailors today base everything on their instruments. Long time ago my neighbour in the marina, newby, bought a boat, fully equipped, as he touched a large inheritance. He set off to the UK from Holland. Long story short......instruments failed and he ended up in Norway. Could have gone horribly wrong. So....always have a sextant on board, paper charts and the skill to use them.

Senior citizen parents advise..Never say to a child under 18 years old, "I'm going to do 'such & such', Is that okay?" Parents make the rules and the choices, you know best. They will learn from the good advice you give. Giving children choices turns them into brats. Soon they will expect the parents to do for them what they want. Praying for wisdom for you both😊.

That was so interesting! Why do I say that? Well, I used to do boating with my parents of the English southern coast! We did this from 1977 until 1984 and had an old cathode radar tube! To see the technology that you have a rightly use is just stunning! We used to ever morning turn the radio on to her the weather forecast! How it has all changed! Thank you for showing it to us all! As for AI, remember it is just a Pattern-matching system. That's all. It doesnt contain Logic just patterns. And while you can do a lot with patterns (drive a car, chat, or walk a robot) tyou must be prepared that it might not have the best (or even correct) solution. Verify everything yntil you gain confidence. And even then keep an eye on it.

All the electronics is nice as long as you have enough power to run it all 24 hours a day on passages but ... we had a forecasted four day weather window fo a two days and nights passage and 18 hours into this trip we suddenly were in 25 foot seas and 50 knots of blustery wind. Wave tops blowing off the steep wave walls that would break over the dodger and cockpit. So much for reliable forecasting. Radar showed approaching weather on 24 mile range but to little information much too late. 36 hours later the wind dropped to 30 knots and seas to 15-18 feet and our two day passage became a four day three nights ordeal. We stayed dry and warm inside of our completely enclosed cockpit and our 42 Manta cat handled the seas but this made for a very loud and violent ride. It's more about sailing preparation and good judgment over AI electronics. I still used a sextant, paper charts and dead reckoning with many miles of extreme weather saiing, navigation and sail management. You must always be prepared when your electronics go black. S/C Reality.

As a Computer Expert, let me tell you there's always a way around someone's proprietary, stuff. Over the years I have worked at or owned at least 3 compamies which did exactly that -- connect up different protocols so they all work together. The last one being Voxeo which was a company providing developer libraries to write Voip software. Even AT&T and most other Cell companies adopted it as it was better than how they were doing things. So we helped make your Portable Cell Phone from just a hand held computer to a full telephone (including internet). The way you write such programs is come up with any standard and write specific code to make each piece of hardware talk to that standard. In that way you can plug in something new and they all talk. Text, Email, Webmail, Fax, Voice, even Radio. So it goes in as a voice mail and comes out as a Fax -- simply because of software to make each type fit our standard (in or out). Simple once you understand it.

I get that you Jordan, have great mechanical, software and electrical abilities, some of which i can only admire but not equal. And Desiree always captures your work perfectly. Anyone who ever watches how to videos on utube where the guys hands obscure the work knows what i mean by that. Spent a large part of my working life working on building computers, so i am amazed that you are able to use them so well as aids to sailing. I'm not a sailor, at least not yet - working on that :) , but I am into Linux and open source in a big way. If I ever manage to set sail and go exploring, FOSS (Free Open Source Software) will run the show as much as possible. OpenCPN, OpenSeaMap, Traccar GPS tracker, etc. Raspberry Pi for house server, media center. I wonder how smart it is to put that much crucial tech in the bilge ... ? Looks a bit risky to me. Looking forward to the Turkish adventure - safe travels guys :)

We live in a wondrous age. Here are some of the things that I think - data dependent - should be possible in the near future . Among the many possibilities: What's the probability of that weather window staying open throughout the voyage? Updated at a short intervals. At the start of the journey, what options are there for setting a course that will make diverting to a safe port more accessible? While underway, if the weather window now looks shorter, can I sail more aggressively than I normally do and make it? What are my options for mitigating the risk of adverse conditions while underway? It will be interesting to see how important a variable like - when was the hull last cleaned - might be. Over time, one class designs may be easier to accurately advise but AI should also be able to find useful commonalities across sailboats with similar characteristics. It should be possible to profile the individual doing the sailing or the crews and put them into categories. It should be possible to provide a review of how well the boat performed relative to potential within constraints. And on and on.

Also, if you keep "double" of the most important things you need for the boat to sail without any risks, like the computer or some of the other navigation systems themselves. To think: How would the sailors of even the Biblical times (since your in Ephesus, there are stories of ruff Seas in the New Testament, Paul) see all of our technology today: space satellites, weather technology, starlink, water makers, solar panels, lithium batteries, AIR conditioner, Oven. Refrigerator freezer, washing machine etc. Question: How do you prepare for an EMP Burst and all technology fails? But what other systems fail? (Video please). We have come so far. When people sailed, they would run out of fruit. Become vitamin C deficient developer scurvey and actually die. (Add that Multivitamin to the life raft supplies). You couldn't even flush the toilet because the pumps wouldn't work. What would you do to sail, cook and survive? Love your videos! Wishing you all the best. Blessings.

Soon there would be no more space on that boat for more gadgets! Soon the gadgets have a higher value than the boat itself? Don't get me wrong though. It is good with any additional gadgets that will help to sail a boat safe. I just think that with time one gets used to it and gets to rely so much on all this gadgets and gadgets tend to break down and often when they do is when you need them the most. Each and every gadget adds an extra break down on board. The KISS concept disappears.
