In the late 1990's I worked a 3000t mothership for the prawn industry in the Gulf of Carpenteria in Northern Australia. We anchored overnight at a large bomby known as Mackrel Mountain. In the morning there was a huge school of baitfish attempting to shelter under the 100m ship. They were quickly discovered by a school of Spanish Mackeral, who chopped through the baitfish, boiling the surface of the clear tropical water. The view was spectacular from the deck of the mothership. Eventually a massive Striped Marlin showed up & it hunted down a few Mackeral like an organic torpedo. One of the most spectacular things I've seen at sea.

Just because the fish arnt there doesn’t mean they arnt somewhere else.. Currents, food availability and numerous other factors can cause pelagic saltwater fish to change their patterns year to year. Prime example of that is the bluefin fishery off California, they were non existent for years then all the sudden for the past few years bait showed up and the fish followed.

Wow. Boys that was absolutely amazing. I’ve been obsessed with giant bluefin since I found out they had returned to UK waters. I find it very exciting. Not from a fishing point of view. From a lover of wildlife’s point of view. This video was absolutely fantastic. I was trying to imagine myself in the kayak seeing it from there. I kinda could but then again I kinda couldn’t. Nonetheless I was buzzing seeing him in there. There was one that jumped right clean out the water toward the kayak and from our angle it looked very close. Very close indeed. I thought it was going to capsize his kayak for a second. I don’t know if his camera was facing that way though. It’s great to see these monsters back in our waters again. Very exciting. It means the measures that have been put in place elsewhere are working. Still more could be done. He was 100% right about the Mediterranean is a giant fish trap. The way they net everything going through the straits of gibralter is sickening. Nothing has a chance. Something should be done about that. Fishing them where they breed is just madness. Anyway rant over. Its amazing seeing them so close to shore. I need to make an effort to go and try and see some. It’s on the bucket list. I would have liked to have seen more of the footage from the kayak but other than that.. subscription well and truly earned guys. I loved it

Hey, thanks for taking the time to write this comment. It truly was ass exciting as it looked, I hoped it came across on camera okay. Sometimes it's difficult to get this across, but I feel like capturing the original audio from both Dad made the sequence. It was the first time we had been that distance apart whilst hooked up to both microphones so wasn't sure if it was even going to work! It sounds as if you really know your stuff, I haven't read into the fishing in the med yet, but sounds pretty devastating. I hope you one day get to tick this off your bucket list, I'll speak to Dad and see if we can put another video together with just his clips. Thanks for watching! ☺️

Are people allowed to fish there? Usually when there are blue fin tuna close to shore it doesn't take long for that area to get really crowded with fishing boats.
@BeneathTheGold2 күн бұрын
@ fishing for them is heavily regulated. You need a special licence to fish for them which I’m sure is very expensive and it’s usually only catch and release. There has been a couple of bluefin legally caught and kept but not many.

Fantastic footage but what is sometimes not understood is that the return of the fish to the waters of SW England, West Wales and the West coast of Ireland is not due to climate change. These fish are quite happy in relatively cold water, indeed the rod caught record of around 1500 lbs came from Nova Scotia in Canada. In fact there was a thriving sport fishery for them in the 1930s here in the UK, based in Scarborough and Whitby, for fish following the North Sea herring fishery. Your commentary implies that they were overfished in the UK in the 70s and 80s but this is not true, there has never been a commercial bluefin tuna fishery in the UK. Nor is it proven that they’re part of the very much reduced Mediterranean population, they’re just as likely to follow the Gulf Stream across from the East Coast of America or via the Azores, and maybe linked to the population providing the fishery off the Atlantic coast of Spain. Wherever they come from they are welcome and have provided a huge boost to tourism in the Atlantic coast regions of the UK. There’s still no commercial fishing but around 700 per annum are caught by anglers fishing from the 40 odd licensed boats in England and Wales. These are measured for research purposes, some tagged, but all released back into the sea. What is interesting is that they seem more numerous here than in their more traditional home waters and one has to wonder where they go outside the late Summer/early Winter period when they come near our coasts.
Interesting stuff, I thought it was all down to climate change why they were here .

Another small species of tuna, the albacore, is caught in good numbers in the Gulf Stream a fair way off the SW of Ireland and this might be connected to a warming of the ocean.
