I bought a 'personal licence' for Reaper about 5 years ago. That entitled me to free updates for 2 full versions. Currently on 6.32, I'm still on the same licence - 60 bucks. Bugs are fixed incredibly quickly, updates/improvements released regularly. For free. The user community is well-informed and friendly. The program is very CPU light - I only ever have slowdowns if I'm using a ton of sample heavy VSTs. Wnever a new version is released I can go from download to launch in 20 seconds - I have fast broadband but my PC is purely average. Reaper can even edit video. The developer (Justin) is a genius - he built WinAmp and sold it for a chunk of change, so I get the feeling that Reaper is a labour of love - he doesn't need the money - he does it because he wanted to provide an efficient and stable platform for users at minimal cost. Am I a Reaper fan-boy? Hell yes. I've never used PT but I know several engineers who work in audio and audio-visual who were all PT users. They've all ditched it in favour of Reaper or Logic. Avid is run by suits with no interest in anything but the bottom line, and they are still trying to exploit their position as 'industry standard', which was acquired simply by virtue of them being one of the first DAWs when digital was born a few decades ago. It can't last. They don't innovate, improvise, or have their users' best interests at heart. Ultimately they're doomed.

In the commercial market things can be a bit different. Most Pro Commercial studios generally aren't early adopters and there is a reason for when time is money. You would be surprised how many A-Level studios running older MacOS machines and slightly older versions of Protools. There are also many studios still using the old Blue Digidesign 192 I/O and the early 2000s Apogee Rosetta converters.

I have to agree with your discussion. As a bedroom producer I can't logically justify paying an annual subscription fee when my BMI checks and CD Baby revenues are so meager. Paying that much for bug fixes (i.e. stuff that wasn't right to begin with) is not a compelling business model (in my view). Keep up the good work.

It's not really all that important because most Professionals aren't early adopters as there is a reason, time is money. Pros don't have time for down time or trouble shooting and fixing bugs, crashes and compatibility problems. If it ain't broke don't fix it. You would be surprised how many multimillion dollar commerical studios running older Macs with slight older versions of Protools. Many high end studios are still using early 2000s converters like the oringal Lynx Aurora 16, Apogee Rosetta or the original blue Digidesign 192 i/0. @@eman0828 -- Oh, I'm quite aware of that. But just to set the record straight, I *am* a professional voice actor who does video production on the side (partly to promote my VO business, but I also do some for-hire work, too). Back in December, my 5-year old iMac, which was tricked out to the max when I bought it five years earlier, the damn thing bricked. Totally died. I had no other choice but to purchase a new computer. Apple had just released the new M1 Macs. I had every intention of waiting for the second generation Apple Silicon chip before I bought one, figuring the first one would be the worst of all of them. But my iMac dying forced my hand. I could not justify spending another $4K on a computer that I knew I'd want to replace within a year or so when the next generation M-series chips came out. So I opted for the low-end Mac -- the MacMini. I knew it would, at minimum, handle all my mission-critical VO work, and would probably do most essential video work I might throw at it. Indeed, it's been great. BUT...as everyone knows by now, there's a shit ton of plug-ins that don't run or won't even install on the M1 Macs that ran just fine on Intel Macs. If only I'd known. But I had no time to shop. I had to get another computer RIGHT NOW when the old one died just to keep the lights of my business on. Nobody ever considers these kinds of scenarios when they pop off about this stuff. I guess I'm just lucky. In any case, when I first switched from Avid Media Composer to Final Cut Pro and from Pro Tools to Logic Pro, I did so for the expressed purpose of knowing that whenever Apple released a new operating system, there wouldn't be that long lag time before the apps would run smoothly on the new OS. That has been the case. I don't miss Avid in the least. And there is NOTHING I would ever need to do in a multi-track audio editor that I can't do in Logic Pro. I just don't need Pro Tools.

Avid hasn't changed. It's a wolf in sheep's clothing. Some months ago, if you owned a perpetual license and let your support plan expire, you could pay and jump back into it, which I didn't because I wasn't going to pay for nothing, because most bug fixes with avid means other bugs coming up. Now with the latest version which has the most "improvements" (I use quotes because as usual, it's stuff they could have done one decade ago) you cannot jump back into getting your support plan active. You either pay your full license again or go into subscription. So they're doing it again. They are milking money from their users, it's just from other angles taking advantage of the "improvements" of their newer version. So, if you want to go into atmos and have your perpetual license support plan expired, you either buy your already existing license again or drop your license and go into subscription. Well done Avid!!
@eman08283 жыл бұрын
I don't think you're re paying the license that you already have. You are just buying a version upgrade maybe. @nachomolino3 жыл бұрын
@@eman0828 Yes, you are right in that sense. The main thing here is Avid won't let you jump back into your support plan. So you either get the license again or switch to subscription. @@HollywoodVirtualAudio Well Studio One is not a Post Production DAW which is the reason why Atmos is not implemented. Its marketed towards Music Production just like Cubase & Logic. Media composers (who only use it to export their stems to clients, they create in Logic/Cubase etc) and 3. Older musicians who got into Pro Tools years ago and know it backwards already. Unless you specifically need to know Pro Tools because you want work for and have to work with a big studio or broadcaster I cannot think of single reason to choose Pro Tools over Appleton Live, Studio One, Cubase, Logic or Reaper. Which probably accounts for why practically nobody does. Which means Avid is on a mission impossible. Carbon is a wildcard for me, it's too expensive at $4,000 and I'm not totally sold on the ethernet AVB choice vs. Thunderbolt, nor the I/O options. I'm seriously considering eventually replacing my maxed out 2010 cheese grater with HD Native card with a M1/M1x/M2 and a Presonus 4848 which gives me just the straight 32 analog IO (plus an additional 16 ADAT I/O) at only $1,500 over TB2. Will I be happy? I hear you about latency but maybe this will just conquer all in the end. And maybe I can get off Pro Tools onto Studio One Pro - I've been trying, honestly, Pro Tools is still my go-to, just really hard after using it over 20 years. For me, Avid needs to really bump up innovative features to earn my $400 a year, namely: true Melodyne ARA2 integration, include features like what VocALign offer, develop new VIs, plugins and virtual mixing consoles (not third party but actually built into the pro tools - imagine if you could have different console emulations. Avid has done so little to be innovative with our money, your comments about paying for bug fixes are so, so true. I will give AVID a nod for their routing folders and track presets features, useful. .But how about a really good plugin manager, one that allows us to easily switch on/off groups of plugins and organize them and weed out the bad ones that we all know can lead to instability? How about a faster launching Pro Tools (compare to Studio One, what a difference). Please keep these videos coming Barry and thank you! Justin Arey Portland, Oregon

Hold on, regarding latency, Presonus has a separate "engine" for channels in record. It is not like Cakewalk where it was at the end of the chain. Recording Vox and synths are as fast as your CPU can handle the separate engine. The rest doesn't matter if it is buffered 200mS in advance.
@BarryJohns3 жыл бұрын
That’s a workaround, and if you need to be able to track through nice reverb‘s and other plug-ins you have in your DAW, you can’t do that that way. Only a UAD interface in addition to AVID DSP lets you do that. Just about every Interface out there allows for some form of no latency recording, but you have to use a GUI in front of your DAW, that’s just another thing that slows you down. Many DAW‘s allow you to freeze tracks, but again that can be a hassle having to freeze and unfreeze just to do an overdub. Once a person has worked with a DSP based system for recording, be at universal audio, or avid, it’s hard to truly appreciate how amazing that can be, will you have no distractions whatsoever whenever you need to track anything. You simply just don’t ever have to think about your computer, or buffers. Those luxuries come to a cost, DSP is not inexpensive, to have that luxury, you have to invest quite a bit. But for those that have it, they consider that investment invaluable to the creative process.

They are going the way of tape and it couldn’t be soon enough. I was also a very early PT adopter. Once upon a time it was amazing and groundbreaking. Now … they are just lazy and lagged very far behind. I only keep a copy around for legacy purposes these days. I happily use Studio One, Logic and Digital Performer. The latency point cannot be overstated. There is still a world of difference with something like Carbon and native. That said, the M1 took a big bite out of DSP when it comes to latency. That thing is incredible. As of right now though something like Carbon is soooo worth it. It resolves latency issues effortlessly and you can load it up with plugins while tracking without introducing latency which is a potential game changer because you can start using all kinds of effect during tracking. A lot of the time I'll write a melody and it's effects dependent at least to an extent. It would be so much easier if I could just track it with the dependencies in tow rather than have to imagine and hope I can make it work later. If you can't swing Carbon then going the M1 route will get you a little closer.
@BarryJohns3 жыл бұрын
Do you know there’s a lot of people that say DSP-based systems are not needed anymore, and that’s mainly because they’ve truly never really experienced using a DSP-based system. Once you get a chance to use one, especially to its potential, the benefits are obvious.

@@BarryJohns Really? Yeah that's probably lack of experience and thus lack of perspective like you say. I have a fully loaded 2020 iMac i7 with 128gb of RAM. It's meant to be the pinnacle of Intel's offering as far as single core performance is concerned. I like to compose with just a piano VST and a microphone. It's fast and doesn't get in the way. I can usually instantiate it quickly enough so as to not interrupt the flow or lose the moment for lack of better expression. The thing is I can't do this with the aforementioned iMac at 32 buffer. I load up Kontakt, press a few keys and the whole thing just craps out. You back off the keys and the CPU recovers then you press a few more and it renders it for a bit maybe. Then craps out again intermittently. It's just unusable basically. My little M1 mini can do it even through Rosetta so that's at least promising but Carbon offers a sure thing. Just load it up with whatever you need and enjoy latency free workflow without your computer crapping out. It really has to be experienced to be appreciated I think like you already pointed out :).

Thanks for the video, I found it very interesting and informative. I don't "hate" any tool I use. It's like preferring a straight blade over a Phillips head. When I use ProTools, I am always intrigued that it became an industry standard. I know it's robust. The hardware was always good. But if you use other DAWs, it's just horrible to look at and really clunky to use. It's like it's stuck in a time warp. When I get mixes done externally, I now look for engineers who use Cubase because I don't want to go through the pain of exporting all the files and checking them in ProTools. It's excruciating! All that aside, it's a heck of a lot of money if you compare it to say - Slate. Recently Steinberg asked in a poll if their users would use a subscription service. I'd love to know what the response was to that. I like my Slate subscription a lot because it's serious bang for buck. But US$400 a year? I can't justify that myself.

@@boomish69 ProTools has had its day. LogicPro is still a very viable alternative especially in orchestral/film music. Since stems can easily be exchanged, the actual DAW is less meaningful outside of some features here and there. Most every DAW have their own plugins, and there is a plethora of 3rd party plugins, so again there is less need for an expensive-subscription based DAW in my opinion. Having external hardware to run a DAW or plugins may have been necessary in the past, but less so now with powerful computers. And all real pro studios are still using consoles, rackmount gear and 500 series units for processing signal. Pro Tools may still have a foothold in pro level studios but anyone can send a stem done in another DAW. It's like sending a PDF file. Constant crashes during sessions etc. As a studio owner I do run multiple DAW's; this was due largely because some years back I couldn't get past the "Drive is not fast enough" error I was getting from PT. That drove me crazy and cost me hours of client session time. Fast forward to today my PT system has been pretty stable. It still use PT a lot because I deal with a lot of high end clients who have the budget to go to commercial studios who are still using PT. True my home based clients use other DAW's but the commercial studio's on the most part are still using PT. I said to myself I my upgrade PT one more time so I am current but it will be the last time. I have been checking Harrison's Mix Bus lately for in the box mixing, I will admit I do mostly everything outside the box since my studio is mainly hardware based. Or if I use a long chain of UAD plugins, they are less bound to break compared to others, simply because they got that modelling so right That's really what the digital thing is about; to do all the nonlinear stuff that happens in real life, in the exact right way. Try to align a line of Waves plugins for instance, and you'll see them break before you know. I'm happy with my plugins, AND Metric Halo. if you are with yours, we are all set even if ye don't have the same tool. cheers

Both Carbon and the Hybrid Engine. Those are not for everyone, but there are a great deal of us that love that aspect of what they are doing. The average home studio will never need either of those features.

I don't understand how the name of the program can have the word PRO if I constantly encounter glitches and freezes. It's just horrible. I tried to become a user of this DAW (before that I worked with cubase, studio one, now with reaper) being influenced by the marketing vibe (industry standard, used by top engineers) but it's just ridiculous. I feel very sorry for these poor people who have been tied to this garbage for years and cannot leave it.

What drives me a bit nutz is that people think the amount of ram equates to computer speed. Having 96GB of ram doesn't make a computer faster than one with 8GB unless you are loading a lot of data at once. All a large amount of ram does is prevent disk swapping. But ultimately the problem with AVID is they more slowly and are behind the curve on almost everything. I don't even consider their products. Folders are another example, that should have been in pro tools 10 years ago, its just goes on and on.
@BarryJohns3 жыл бұрын
As far as DAW’s RAM is not as important, for video editing it is a big deal.
@dodgingrain36953 жыл бұрын
@@BarryJohns True, It just drives me nuts when people talk about having lots of ram in relation to speed. Ram doesn't make a computer faster, it makes it slower if there isn't enough for the intended use case. Especially when it comes to audio production where the number of cores and the individual core clock speed maters far more than the amount ram.

What a calm rational speech. I don’t do calm and rational very well. LOL. Even though I’m not a ProTools user I’ve had the same conflict with Adobe. Adobe can be excellent and it can also be an absolute mess. For the editing portion I have just moved from premiere Pro to resolve. I did notice you mentioned that you do your video in final cut. If you just do amateur video editing, Final Cut is pretty OK. But if you want The real deal, then you need to learn da Vinci resolve 17. Anyways… It was just interesting to hear what a rational, speech you gave. I would’ve been screaming at them. LOL. And I’m in the middle of learning logic pro 10 which is the only DAW that I’m familiar with, so I can’t really make any comparison.

Their support is really awful for the cost of subscription, which is one of my biggest gripes. The updates break things. Users who want to update on release are basically beta testers. But if you need help with the errors, good luck.

@@kmac. when they call it support, it was a joke since day one. Try getting Avid on the phone. That being said, there are lots of very knowledgeable people on the DUC forum that can help with just about any issue, unless it’s a known bug.

I'm still using Pro Tools 8HD with a 6 card Accel rig on an 8 core Mac Pro OS lion. All my hardware is branded Digidesign. Massive power, zero latency and Solid as a rock, and I won't budge. I have versions 9 and 10 but they just don't work as well..All of the biggest advantages for upgrading stop at version 8 in my personal experience. Those once $5000 Accel cards which Avid chose to make obsolete after version 10 now can be bought for about 100 bucks these days. I scrounged them up on eBay and built a staggering rig for pennies on the dollar. I just can't get into any new modern plug-ins with my OS limitations so that's the tradeoff. I don't have any needs that aren't in PT8 and a suite of WAVES, TC, and McDSP plug-ins have me more than covered. I won't follow Avid (or Apple for that matter) on this tail-chase they and Mac seem to have going.. Planned obsolescence. I'll just stay put and continue to get lasting return on my investment. I bought a copy of Reaper anyway simply to support their business model which I think is Awesome.

Now… I'm in the process of setting up a new home studio… and I don't know man…. Pro tools… or studio one 5… .I love the lay out of protools.. But studio one is in the end cheaper… ahhhhh… I go dawless… 😁😆😅

For those that record mainly Audio, to me PT is still the DAW of choice for the way it’s laid out. Especially if a person could t their teeth on analog, it’s laid out just like that. If I was starting out now with no previous exposure to any DAW, not sure what I’d pick. Everyone one of them historically has had issues, there is no perfect DAW. With Avis’s pricing strategy, I doubt I’d go that route only because of that alone.

Meanwhile... I am starting with pro-tools now. lol. So far I like it. I am getting back into producing-composing so I am working from home. Honestly, people complain way too much. It's overwhelming the amount of solutions out there, it really does not matter. Any one of the current solutions is 1000% that anything that was available 5, 10, 20 years ago. The thing I like about pro tools is that it is easy to focus on the task.. its limitations are probably it's strength.

Been a digi/Avid user since Sound Tools II. Been a love/hate relationship since Avid took over. Support has been especially bad during the Avid era, though I have to say the most recent move to an M1 Mac was relatively painless (even though it’s not officially supported!). Moving all my plug-in licenses was actually much more difficult and time consuming. For me PT feels like home. Logic is quite frustrating and I have no desire to move to Logic. Tried Reaper, it again, just felt clunky. I’ll take a look at S1 as people seem to move from PT to S1 rather easily.

@@BarryJohns I think what the music people don't realize is that Avid is focused on the film market as those are the customers buying the big systems. The project studio user is just the gravy market to keep revenues coming in. It's the easy money and Avid will only do what is needed to prevent the music base from leaving. I used to own an HD system, but have since moved to UAD hardware. I do miss the speed and ease of a true Avid DSP based system for tracking.
