One of the reasons I switched away from Pro Tools to, in my case, REAPER, is because of the costs and the unreliability of AVID, they are changing course quickly and make hardware obsolete before I have the time to unbox it (and I'm a quick unboxer).... However, back when I switched, it was the main reason, while, now that I've been using REAPER for 4 years, there have grown more reasons to never switch back again. Pro Tools is still a super good tool, but the way I've customised REAPER to fit in my workflow is just something that I'll never going to get from Pro Tools...

They are both really great. On a Mac, if you want one DAW package to get started, Logic is great with its included instruments, plugins, samples, loops. Studio One 5 has a bunch of included stuff as well, but not as robust as Logic. I do love the Studio One workflow and of course it is multi-platform. On a side note, who even remembers PAYING for a Logic update for years? Logic has been the same price for about a decade (at least), and all updates have been free since then.

I noticed Pro Tools brought perpetual back, the upgrade cost for me is $250, which is too steep for my blood when you look at the new cost of Studio One and a Cubase upgrade. Glad they brought it back, but they need to ditch this rental SaaS scheme as soon as possible. It's the same reason I won't touch Adobe products anymore. These companies help revenue in the short term by switching to SaaS, but in the long-term they open a vacuum for other smaller companies to compete. When Adobe sold outright software no company wanted to compete, now you have Affinity suites and about 50 other brands making Photoshop and Illustrator clones.

As dirty as Avid plays, they’ll be liable to push an update that requires us all to surrender perpetual and go straight subscription. First off! Great video Barry. Always love listening to your point of view when it comes to Avid as a company. I like Pro Tools, I like Avid, and like you I want the best for them. I personally think that it will be a matter of time for them to start selling either perpetual licenses again or get a better pricing cause, let's be super honest here... Who's willing to pay 99$ a year for Ultimate/Flex or 999$ yearly? That's just pure nonsense. Now, Pro Tools Studio being more of a workhorse is great. Having advanced automation for example is something that should've been in both versions regardless. Now that that's happened it's great, but how long did it actually take to give an update like that. I tested Ultimate for a year and it was cause they gave me a license to use cause I made video content for them so that was my payment sort of speak. And I loved Ultimate for sure but when it comes to expenses, not worth specially if you're starting out. Now Pro Tools Studio makes more sense to me than before. I definitely want to see them bringing back perpetual, reinstatements and giving them in a more reasonable price. Plus actually sharing great updates in a season basis. There's still a lot to work on for sure, but it's not impossible to do it. QUICK EDIT: Check out the latest video Recording Studio Loser uploaded.

My red flags came up on the Pro Tools 6.4 (maybe .7) update that forced a paid update within the base architecture of 6. The company was still Digidesign at the time, but I was pretty pissed dating back to circa 2004/05 and have lived through all the seriously and egregiously horrible updates/versions over the years. This new subscription approach, however, takes the cake for their worst move ever. I love Pro Tools as well. Hate Avid. I'm in the middle of learning Luna along with work-shopping Logic and Reaper. Avid is absolutely horrible. HORRIBLE. I can't stress that enough. You can't even get good tech support over there. It seems like they either have very bad Berklee interns working and SOMETIMES answering phones OR just a very shitty answering service that will pass messages along without a commitment of a returned call. I'm not sure how people doing business like this can survive, but they have so many of us over a barrel. I hate it. It's utterly fascinating how Avid could have been the God damn champions of pandemic-era production by having GOOD press with GOOD deals, but no. They went the exact opposite direction. But American capitalism and greedy behaviors always win and they will continue going to that well until they can't any longer. Avid is the worst.

I actually lost my Pro Tools 12 ‘Perpetual’ license a while ago, back when Avid first brought in their subscriptions, as I (and a lot of other people at the time) were confused with their new plans. At the time, I thought I was upgrading to the latest version of PT by picking a one year subscription plan, thinking that if I didn’t renew at the end of that year, that I would just be left with whatever version I was on at the time, big mistake! I actually lost my PT12 ‘Perpetual’ license in the process. I argued with Avid for almost a year about it, but they would not budge or give me my ‘Perpetual’ and supposedly lifetime license (that actually expired) back to me.. In the end, I had to purchase another ‘Perpetual License’ so that I could open my session files. I had steam coming out of my ears! I was ready to invest in their eco system, but after that incident I left because of their greed. I’m glad I’m not the only one that felt like that.

Subscriptions unfortunately are becoming the norm. I feel this is a bad thing as well. I have several plugins from Waves and you end up paying an amount every year to keep them updated, they were a really big investment when I bought them and I renewed them the year before last, but have been seeking alternatives as that is too big an expense for my budget. In a way, you don't HAVE to update the plugins but if you upgrade your operating system or your hardware (like on Macintosh) it breaks the old version and you are back to renewing the licenses. Like AVID, Waves is a bit greedy in my opinion, though the plugins are absolutely wonderful.

Enjoy your channel, Barry. I'm a long time Digital Performer user which I like quite a bit and have used for years. I'm very comfortable with it. In October of last year I bought a perpetual license for Pro Tools (new now "Studio" version) off a guy who was selling it "used" as it was given to him has a gift. I figured it would be nice to have as another option and might be useful if I decided to track in other studios that were based around Pro Tools. I am really not happy though about Avid's business practices and soaking the end user for every penny as they seem to have done going all the way back to the Digidesign era. So now I'm considering moving to something else as my "secondary" DAW. Would be wonderful if Avid made Pro Tools a better value and your point about subscriptions as we enter a period of recession is a very good one.

There’s a lot of other things people can give up before their subscription to tools they actually need to work. I actually things that’s one of the great things about subscriptions is that you can get out of them when you don’t need them or in some cases, can’t afford them. If someone is doing this professionally and can’t afford $30/month they’re not charging enough for their services. Even on the low end, recording sessions are $25/hr. In 30 days if you haven’t even booked one 1hr session we gotta call a spade a spade. Times get hard for us all, yes but there shouldn’t be so much pride in trying to be a full time engineer/musician/producer that one runs from a job to help them keep the lights on.

Well, because Studio one had an amateur video track I moved over to Pro Tools. I have one regret - for me the workflow of PT makes me realize Pro Tools is the industry standard for a very good reason. Pro Tools is a beautiful and logical programme. Thank God for Pro Tools is all I can say.

@@Sundaydrumday I think he was talking on the context of Audio Post Production, not music. You will never see Reaper, Studio One or Cubase on big Dolby Atmos mixing theaters, Pro Tools is the industry standard for this kind of things, period. Some foolish people use Nuendo for this purpose, but they can't really be taken too seriously because of that. Nuendo has still the strong DNA from Cubase and don't really interact well with the need of Audio Post Production for movie mixing.

I have been hopping between s1, reaper and pro tools for years now. About to go back to PT for good. The workflow has been ironed out over decades and it is just awesome. Of course, we all know the problems with PT (and particularly avid) but we often forget why it’s so good

I use Studio 1 5, and for me noobie is amazing. I have Reaper and follow Kenny Gioia on Utube, and this DAW is the ultimate one for 60 bucks. The learning curve is steep, because you can change, and customize everything, from the menu of what you wanna see and choose to the skin. If I was a professional, I would get into Reaper, because it's the most powerful DAW, but you couldn't tell from looking at it.
@BarryJohns2 жыл бұрын
I bought reaper, I just couldn’t fall in love with it. That’s most likely because I just did not give it enough time. I also absolutely love studio one, and that is where I was going to land my studio, until I found out that the SSL UF8 is way better supported in Cubase/Nuendo. I’m going to continue as I’m learning Nuendo, to also learn studio one, after I’ve got both of those down where I’m really comfortable with it I’m gonna go back to reaper and really dig into it. If I’m gonna do this channel right, I need to be versatile in various DAW’s to be able to help people the most.

I appreciate your comments on what Avid is trying to do with the perpetual licensing. I have no clue either what they're trying to do but hopefully, for them, they'll figure it out before they loose everyone including those frustrated with the Apple Silicon Native issue. I was a bit surprised that you chose Nuendo though. I sure hope it wasn't just the sake of a sale that led you to go that way. Nuendo has more to do with post video work than music production in much the same way Pro Tools Ultimate is.. I have had Cubase since 2011 and picked up Pro Tools a couple years later and I'm happy with both for the most part in terms of functionality. I'm not saying anything bad about either one at all but there are a few things that Pro Tools has the Cubase doesn't yet have. Import session Data is something that Pro Tools has that I don't think Cubase or Nuendo has come even close to do but I'm sure there's a workaround to get around those things. Anyway, I'm glad to hear that you are exploring the various DAW offerings and I'll be following your posts regarding the subject. I sure wouldn't want this to turn into one of those "best DAW" debates because the Best DAW is the one you have (own) and you know like the back your hand where you can accomplish everything you need to accomplish to get the job done. Keep the posts coming Barry!!! Much appreciated!!!

I can confirm, I just purchased a reinstatement plan for my perpetual License for $249. I hadn’t actually planned on it and I even wondered if there was a hidden catch to it. The only issue I had was ordering through Guitar Center online (I had a gift card) and due to a bug in their system, I never got my activation code. I’m happy to say they fixed the issue and I got my updated license last night. What’s even better is that my 003 console still works with 2022.6. At some point I’m going to find an Artist Mix. I have Studio One and Logic as options but Pro Tools will always be the main tool I use for my job. I’m optimistic, but let’s see where we are next year.

Thanks for this informative video Barry. Question about the TDM topic you mentioned; would it be possible to just purchase the Ultimate Perpetual Upgrade for $499 if you’re coming from PT HD10/TDM and either buy an HDX Core card new or used or is there a missing component in there?? I see SW still has a TDM to HDX exchange including one HDX and Ultimate for $6.2K(cray-cray) or they sell the card sans software for $4.2K. Am I missing something here or is left hand not seeing what the right hand is doing?? TC!
@BarryJohns2 жыл бұрын
As long as your current license is ProTools HD nine or higher, you’re probably on ProTools HD 10 I would assume. Yes you can use that to upgrade to the most recent version for 499. Keep in mind that you will be paying $400 a year to keep that up to date if you choose to stay up-to-date. Forget about the nonsense of trading up to an HDX card new, you can buy an HDX core card used for around 2k. Or you can go HD Native for around $600 used.

First of all. Love your videos bro. Thanks for them Congrats in getting nuendo which is the best DAW on the planet. Trust me that it’s the best I am a blind user. And let me tell you. It’s really sad that even that I know ProTools it’s the industry standard. But only because it’s already in all of at least the majority of the studios around because the play well at first for the DSP. But Steinberg saw the native it’s the road to go from the 90s not only that! But. It’s even more sad that even when pro tools it’s more capable accessibility wise Dan other companies which let me tell you. Steinberg it’s the worst even then. Because from the very first Version of nuendo or Cubase you have the option to customize all the keyboard shortcuts I it’s a blind user can use it even sometimes without a screen reader. Which like I told you before they don’t have integration whatsoever with it But like you know and all of us know. It’s the company Bruh Pete not only you giving me a software which is always behind of the others. But you charging more than anyone. Because you feel so confident that you have the dominant of the market. And that’s it that’s a problem. Sorry for the long story and thanks again for those videos
