Use a cup of each, wait 10-15 min., followed by hot water flush. Do this every other month as a preventive measure. It's cheap and freshens the drain. DO NOT use Drano on your pipes, especially the toilet.

Missed the steps of using boiling water also didn’t use enough soda or vinegar. When done properly the checmical reaction breaks down grease that’s clogging the drain

Vinegar alone is better for that. The baking soda just neutralizes the acidic properties of vinegar which is what you don’t want to loose when wanting to “break down” or “dissolve”.

@@adanaleman3804 Using vinegar alone is less effective because it doesn't have the same fizzing action without the baking soda. Vinegar can help disinfect and break down some types of clogs, but it's typically more effective when combined with baking soda for a physical reaction.

You need to plug the drain so you can add back flow and unclog it, it definitely works. Same for tubs.

You need to add 3 heaping tablespoons of baking Soda and then add the vinegar about a cup at a time. Keep adding the vinegar until there are no more bubbles. Boil a kettle and send the hot water down the drain 5 minutes later or when you hear the bubbles stop. Not more than 20 minutes later. Repeat this one more time. You might use half a gallon of vinegar and up to half a box this size of baking Soda but not more than 3 tablespoons at a time. Slow and steady. If you have plastic pipes, use hot water not boiling so let the kettle rest 10 minutes after boiling. Plastic pipes can’t take the heat like metal. If you can access the drain by removing the shower grate or sink plug then use a bottle brush or paint roller to scrub out the gunk down as far as you can FIRST so the soda/vinegar can get to the root of the odor. If you can’t remove the grate then do this process a couple more times. Listen for the bubbles to stop before repeating. Make sure you flush with hot water when you’re done. The last thing you want is to clog your pipes with baking soda. If the issue is worse, wait. The bubbles might be causing the drain to clog and water won’t go past the bubbles. The bubbles will subside. If after 20 minutes your drain is clogged, use a plunger to try to loosen the gunk clog. This means it’s working and the gunk is being removed from the walls of your drain pipe. The clog should pass. This is a good exercise to do to all your drains once a year regardless. For $2 a year you can avoid calling a $200 plumber every 5 years. For clogged drains: cover the drain hole after you pour the vinegar down. The bubbles will force the clog through the bend. If that doesn’t work 9 times out of 10, there’s an object down there that can’t be dissolved or pushed through (like plastic) q-tips are a big one but I r seen false fingernails, marbles, toothpaste caps, tweezers……

Precisely. Baking soda is a weak alkali, vinegar is a weak acid. On their own, either one would have a small effect. Mixing them together reduces that effect and in the right proportions, produces a neutral solution. There are plenty of drain cleaners that are far more effective. Why are people so gullible?

This isn't for cleaning though, theoretically the fix from the chemical reaction will help break up clogs. Whether or not the baking soda and vinegar will still be reacting by the time it reaches the culprit is a different story 🤷

It worked for me. Sink was clogged with food scraps. I was skeptical, but tried since I had vinegar and baking soda on hand. Great job! I followed the earlier recommendation to use 1 cup of each, then follow up with a hot water rinse.
