Everyone bottle rearing orphan lambs, calves or goat kids, needs to understand how to prevent bloat. Baking soda (or sodium bicarbonate) has been discussed as a home treatment since the dawn of time, but how well does it really work? Is it simply an old wives tail or is there some truth? It definitely works. I just gave a down calf with acidosis some baking Sosa in water. Next minute - burp burp burp burp.

Hi, rumen acidosis is quite a different disease to abomasal bloat. In fact rumen acidosis doesn't bloat with gas at all, it is bloating with water, as the osmotic pull draws in water from the blood stream. I wonder if something else was going on with your calf. Does this might resonate with the calves situation?- when a ruminant is down and lies on its side, any fluid or digesta in the stomach occludes the stomach inlet, if you will. Ie the bottom of the oesophagus (the food pipe) is blocked. So a down ruminant will essentially always bloat. Once you sit them up they will quickly belch and release all the gas, regardless of the underlying cause of their illness is. I wonder if this may be what happened with your calf...

I’m going to try it. I’m chronically bloated due to IBS related to no gallbladder.

@@SeztheVetHello it's look like my goat is facing same issue. her windpipe end is popping up and down her breathing is producing sound and fast breath her stomach is also bloated. She is not eating anything from last week could you diagnose it please.

We actually have 2 cases: a case when the stomach is full of gas only and here we can use Sodium Bicarbonate, but in the case of you can hear water sound when you shake the animal belly and here you cannot use the sodium bicarbonate because it will react with the liquids and rapidly produce air in the stomach and death will occur. In short, watery bloat is fatal and needs special medications not among them NaHCO3.

But remember that Baking Soda is not Sodium Bixarbone. It is composed of starch, acid and sodium bicarbonate. Soda ash is the name for NaHCO3

Is it true offering baking soda as free choice they will take it if needed?

Hi Kathleene, to be fair I don't deal with this a lot as is not common practice here at all in NZ. However I've been asked a number of times from international viewers. From my research, no this not reliable at all for a number of reasons - studies show if given free choice it is not related the amount of grains they eat (so in answer to your question no) - studies also find very conflicting results around how much is actually required and how much good it actually does. likely becuase the population of bacteria (and therefore acids) in the rumen will vary greatly between groups, depending on how adapted they have been to the diet. I certainly wouldnt be relying on it by any stretch, but is more important to focus on adapting animals to the new diet slowly to give the microflora. good chance to adjust. Thanks for the q :)

Hi Lisa, the causes of bloat in adults is varies (as is kids) and very different to those in kids. Bloat causes in adutls may be: - enterotoxaemia (gut infection) - vaccinate with clostridial vaccine every 6 months for full protection - sudden dietary changes- do things slowly and maintain a high fibre intake eg hay on offer at all times - gut obstructions - dont allow access to trash - rumen acidosis/grain overload- make gradual changes to grain and other changes over 2 weeks, and dont feed more than the packet allows - frothy bloat- high protein grass and clovers stabilise the gas bubbles in the rumen. Have some bloat oil, or parafin oil on hand. Big answer, but there you go :)
