I really appreciate that! I'm confident that the additional moisture improves the contact that the game's pins make with the console. Many people claim that blowing just gets some of the dust out, but I clean all of my games before playing them and keep them in dust covers when I'm not, so it's definitely not a matter of just blowing dirt away. I've also beat nearly 400 NES games to this point, and while the majority of my cartridges work immediately without issue, blowing has helped give a few the extra kick they need when all else seemed to fail. Basically, as a last resort, it doesn't hurt to try! Thank you so much for watching and commenting. :)

This is a learned skill with cartridge gaming consoles. It comes with different angles and intensity of blowing. I suppose it is the moisture of the breath that improves connectivity. But moisture does what it does to copper and metals. So it is a bad idea still. Get a Q-Tip and some rubbing alcohol. Clean it. Usually always works for me too. And that doesn't damage anything.

I've heard the NES start up problem was caused by pushing down the cartridge tray which would bend the connector pins. Some people say you can power on the game without locking down the tray. I don't yet have an NES, so I haven't tried it. I've also heard blowing can cause corrosion on the pins. I used to blow on carts as a kid, but later I started using Q-tips instead.
@TheGameDisplay4 жыл бұрын
It is true that if the pins are still in good condition, you can play without having to push down the game! One of the big culprits of problematic NES consoles is leaving the cartridge in the console while it's pushed down. The pins will gradually bend over time, and getting them to work will become progressively difficult. If you get the front loader, be sure to remove the game whenever you're not playing it! :)
@librapaladin815 жыл бұрын
It worked. I blew into NES and SNES games literally thousands of times as a kid to get games to work. I would also often try just taking the game out and putting it back in without blowing into it, but with almost no success. Twenty years later, I rediscovered my love of those old games and have again tested both approaches. Here's my very non-scientific results to the best of my recollection for both methods... Success WITHOUT blowing: Approx. 5%. Success WITH blowing: Approx. 85% You can throw all the 'scientific, socio/pathological' arguments you want at me and call it a 'bias', but I'm gonna go with simple math from years of first-hand experience. This is what I'm saying! The fact that so often after blowing into even the most stubborn cartridges causes them to work can't just be coincidence! And I always keep my carts inside of dust sleeves while they're not being played, so the whole theory that dust is just being blown off of the contacts is incorrect. Thank you so much for watching and for commenting with those kind words! I really appreciate your support. :)

@1980sGamer 1980'sGamer nailed down the most important point. While I believe that blowing on the NES cartridges could be causing some minor additional damage, we 80's gamers didn't start blowing into them until they had problems working properly.... hence there was already a problem. And beyond that... if the solution works, even if it is causing 'long-term' problems, but continues to make otherwise unplayable games playable more than 30 years later, at what point is the 'harmful solution' worse than not being able to play the game at all??
@librapaladin812 жыл бұрын
What about compressed air-duster canisters... which are meant for today's electronic surfaces such as keyboards? Any thoughts or actual information on how they might affect older game cartridges? Maybe if held from a far enough distance? ...I'm open to better solutions, but honestly... the Q-tip/Alcohol solution for me has been even LESS affected than blowing on the cartidge.
@LeonomusPrime7 жыл бұрын
I mean, yes, it helps a little since you're blowing dust from inside... so in the short term you are helping the cartridge run. However, in the long term you're actually completely destroying to cartridge, the the moisture from your breath completely corrodes the copper pins.

@TheGameDisplay7 жыл бұрын
That's actually really interesting to hear, because the Game Genie was the culprit of ruining many NES's back in the day. Due to the Game Genie's larger board size it would permanently stretch the pins inside of the NES, gradually making it more and more difficult for NES games to work. If that doesn't happen with the BLW then that's good to hear!

@TheGameDisplay7 жыл бұрын
Replacing the contacts is definitely one way to greatly increase the chances of your games working. Just make sure you clean all of your games well before inserting them into the new contacts, otherwise you'll make them dirty and before long they'll work just as poorly as your old ones! Also make sure that you always remove cartridges after playing them, as leaving them in the console can stretch the pins over time. On a tight new set of pins you might not even have to push down on the cartridge inside of the console for it to work, so definitely try that first as pushing the cartridge down can also cause pin damage.

Hey there! This is something that I had always wondered about since I was a kid, so I thought it would be fun to make a video about it. You're correct in that I accidentally put the cartridge down somewhere where in cannot be seen, although there was no swapping involved. I have no reason to try and deceive anyone, and the cartridge actually did work after blowing into it. Of course the best way to get your games working is to clean them, so I hope that people do that instead of blowing into their games!
@Malamockq6 жыл бұрын
But we don't know if that's true or not. You could replicate the experiment with the cart in full view at all times and that might lend more credence to the claim. But there would still be more unknown factors involved. Like how you pressed down on the cart, which can't be verified in a video.
@Malamockq6 жыл бұрын
Ok I watched another video on this subject and he performed the experiment with two different carts in full view, and even used an air duster and blowing appeared to make them work. It's interesting. The problem with concluding that blowing "works" is that... it doesn't always work. I didn't own an NES as a kid, but my friends did, and blowing sometimes made them work, and other times didn't do squat. There were plenty of times when they blew on it, didn't work, blew harder, still didn't work, blew even harder, still didn't work. It's interesting that it did work sometimes. I would like to see a better experiment to put this to rest. Too bad mythbusters never attempted it.
