Okay I’m not going insane. Phil Collins is the drummer and he’s the one that sang in the air tonight… still hit the answer right but wrong Genesis member. Chris knew Peter singing Sledgehammer. Joey got them screwed up.

I love this type of content for you, Joey, you really excel at this. However, I think it was Phil Collins moreso than Peter Gabriel who should be credited for the gated reverb though. They were bandmates in Genesis, where Phil Collins was the drummer. But it was 'In the air tonight' as a solo artist that Phil Collins really introduced and popularized the technique. He also did a lot of the drumming tracks for Peter Gabriel's songs, particularly Intruder, which also features it.

Well technically it wasn't Peter Gabriel that invented gated reverb as a sound but Phil Collins. He also famously used it on in the air tonight. Also Phil Collins has drummed for genesis since 1971 and Peter was always the singer and sometimes played the flute. Gated reverb was discovered by having the gate open (the button where you can talk to the performers) from the mixing tabel to the recording booth while Phil Collins only played toms.

I was so confused by all that and thought my childhood was a lie lol. I kept thinking “wasn’t Phil the drummer, when did Peter do his solo stuff then, was he drummer first and then Phil, but how did Phil take over singing …” my mind was spinning 🤨

What did they think that Peter did the drumming and singing in Genesis and then Phil came outta nowhere and just took over drumming and singing and then did a solo career with that. World famous drummer Phil Collins just came outta nowhere and joined Genesis to sing, a drummer...... If you just search "who invented gated reverb" this is the first thing you get. engineer Hugh Padgham It's a familiar sound to anyone who grew up in the 80s-or, frankly, anyone conversant in today's pop music: the gated reverb drum effect, famously “discovered” in 1980 by drummer Phil Collins and engineer Hugh Padgham.

Well, actually! The gated reverb was invented/discovered while Phil Collins was playing drums for PETER's third solo album! So I guess everyone of them gets a credit for that. You can hear the first "gated drums" ever in the opening track of the album, "Intruder", btw!
