Matt, this is so refreshing. "Paring down tackle" is a phrase you said that was so inspiring. Yesterday, I had so much stuff in my boat I couldn't find anything while on the water. I took your advice and limited my plastics to one container, and in the process, removed FIVE containers from my boat. Even did the same thing with rods. Now I have way fewer rods. My hope is it gets me more to focus on location, presentation, and quit changing baits all the time. I think it will also make me much more mindful about a specific day on the water. What will I be throwing? I can always add some stuff on a given day, but keep the TRUE essentials in the boat. Thanks again, Matt.

Yessir!! Perfect vid!! Most baits catch more fisherman than fish and the bazillions of colors in plastics are no different! The only time I deviate from your base colors is water temperature and clarity but I’m simply talking pearls and lavenders for my baitfish imitators or GP vs watermelon. The only deviation I have from you is camo. But really it’s just a GP purple mix!

I also cut down too. I use black with red flack in dirty water. Stained to clear I use sungill color. This looks like a Bluegill to the bass. White color to match shad. Purple works good in super clear water early morning.

For wacky worms I have had a ton of success with a baby bass color combo in all water clarities. I limit my craw colors to colors that match multiple jigs and then pitch those on a a Texas rig. Keeps the amount of plastics down to manageable

To me the flake is the fine tune adjustment for color. Usually based on water hue. My home lake green and blue flake give the bait extra flare, silver is an extra flash when its sunny. Purple flake in off colored water. I don't carry them all in the boat but will swap out from the tackle room based on what lake I'm going to.

Watermelon blk/red flake senko is the color I start with, and I'll transition to Goby or baby bass. If they're biting the wacky rig good, I'll have two colors tied on and can usually get an extra fish or two to bite in the same spot. Or I'll drift down the canal on the kayak with one color and use another on the way back, usually catching equal on both.

Great honest video And I thank you for it I began fishing soft plastics over 35 years ago Bought a worm fishing paperback by Tom Mann in the late 1980's who's worm fishing information caught me alot of bass including all of my biggest bass that all went over 7lbs including my PB bass of 9.75lbs Tom Mann made a statement that was true over 30 years ago and is still if anything even more true today when he said: 90% of fishing luers catch a great many more fisherman than fish" I've tride all kinds of different color soft plastics in dozens of lakes in IL, IN, WI, MI, MN, KY. TN and even Canada and day in and out always caught the vast majority of my bass on a variant of either blue or blk/blu or grn pumpkin or water melon Yes some worms had metal flakes some had chartreuse or fire tails some had curly tails some were straight but all were of the same basic four colors. Thanks again for great honest helpful content

I agree with the basic colors as far as carrying tackle and keeping it simple but I also believe on certain bodies of water and certain situations there are situational baits that outperform the basics but you also can’t overlook the cadence and the way the bait is presented… that can also be the difference of catch rate and not the color per say

I will usually carry 3 colors with me at any given time: junebug or black/blue flake. A green pumpkin or watermelon color. And a wild card color that's usually highly obnoxious like dreamcicle orange or electric blue. I try to let the fish dictate what color they're attracted to that day. But I rarely end up throwing anything natural like green pumpkin. Dark colors are my go to, then I go with the wildcards. I'll settle on the "natural" colors only if that's what the fish tell me they're biting. You'd be surprised at how often that wildcard color ends up being the ticket!

Most pros are out there trying to get all of us to spend all of our moneys on every colors thats made telling us we must have those colors if we are to catch any fish.. BS to that notion, I totally agree on your choice and thats why my boat will get on plane pretty fast because I dont carry all that weight, I would add some watermelon colors to your choices but thats because thats a confidence color, great job on this video!!!

Thank you, Matt. Junebug is usually my go-to for tannic water here in Florida; I may have a go with your Berkley purple when it's time to refill. Otherwise, it's black/blue and green pumpkin shades with some flake most of the time. I think bass see shades more than true colors, and the red end of the spectrum starts to fade pretty quickly as depth increases (at least to our eyes), so I stick with the basics. Also, as a bank guy I'm limited in how much I can carry. Flake color isn't very important to me, but I almost never throw a plastic without flake in it. I'm curious: How often have you seen a time when "no flake" plastics out-produced "flake"? Thanks again!

I agree for the most part. But usually it's after you get beat or someone gives you a tip, that sometimes you need to add a color. 1. My all time favorite bait is a 7" power worm in motor oil color. There's 1 farm pond I fish often that the firewall, black with red tail power worm outfishes motor oil 10-1. 2. I've learned from multiple trips to Kentucky Lake, they have a preference for a bait with some blue on it. Crankbait or plastic. 3. Up at Okibogi here in Iowa, having some red in your bottom hopper junior outfishes other colors for both large and smallmouth. Over the last 6 years I've caught tons of bass all over on a green pumpkin and blue mixed stickbait/ general. Fish can be weird sometimes! Lol

🍺Color doesn’t matter according to the science. Go to Berkeley’s site and read the article “Do bass see color”. I disagree with the science in some situations. One situation is when you are fishing a moving presentation/bait in 1’-6’ of clear water and the bass need to move/feed upward to get to your bait. In that situation you want a contrasting color to the sky. Bright white sky and a white bait is not the best choice, blue bird sky and a blue bait, no thanks. If your contrasting color slightly resembles a bait source that lives in that body of water it’s going to be a good day🤠. Green pumpkin/Blake flake is the greatest color of all time because it is.😎

In the past I’ve been the dude that buys 2 packs of every color that looks cool. Last year I for the most part simplified it to 5 colors. 4 are the exact same that you mentioned. The 5th is a natural bluegill/perch imitation. Up here in the Northeast US that’s the main forage. I know green pumpkin/brown imitates this well but I like to have another that is green pumpkin/brown with some orange/yellow/chartreuse accents. I think blue shades are underrated. The best worm I’ve ever used came from a bargain box at a tackle shop. It was a 7 inch curl tail. Back in my frequent fishing days long ago I mostly threw purple or black, usually with a yellow, chartreuse or sometimes white tail, usually twisters. When do you think it's best to go with a contrasting tail, or not? The bright tails may give you more sunfish nibbles than anything else, but I liked feeling like I was getting bit by some kind of fish, even if they weren't bass.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I really agree simplifying is critical... and bait color is not very critical in the vast majority of scenarios we face as anglers. I think unless they're hyper-focused on a particular prey species, there's no great reason to be particular. If someone thinks a bass will turn down a watermelon worm jigged in his face because he's really looking for that green pumpkin black flake, then I think that angler's focus is in the wrong area. There's more productive places to spend your thoughts, time and cash.

Off topic Matt, but quick question…what’s the status of your new hover hook? I missed the first batch, and you said at the time it might be 3 to 4 weeks before the next batch was ready. I placed my order on 2/17 so it’s been about a month; just wondering when I can expect them. Thanks…

Thanks Matt. In theory a great idea but in practice sometimes so difficult to resist the newest hottest color. I was wondering if the same logic can or should be applied to reaction baits. For example I have way too many warts/rock crawlers when I usually rely on only a couple of the colors. Same is happening with jerk baits., and it gets expensive. What do you think?

I don’t look to much into colours. I have maybe two lures that are an oddball colour. I stick to natural, whites, and darks. I do use red in the spring, but that’s about it. Lol. Match the hatch I always say.

Are any of these baits being maxscent translucent in sunlight? Or uv responsive? I judge baits color on uv reflection first then density of color or how transparent they are in sunlight. What looks similar to the eye in the store or shop is very different to natural sunlight and blacklights.

I think color can be important based on the water color I think it's more important to have the correct size, sound and action on your baits. I wish I had Decided on this prior to filling my basement with every color and Lure made by man.

To many fishing channels are advertising adds that’s the problem and people buy into it, but you have said many times these are the basics and you don’t need this or that, and you will talk about other brand baits that you are not sponsored by which I respect, I don’t believe you are a tv commercial like some, if it’s not on their shirt they don’t talk about it.

Hey Matt: I've watched countless KZbin videos saying "June Bug for tannic water". Is it, in your opinion, because it has purple in it? Or is it an alternative to black/blue?
@MattStefanFishing

i think the purple is more important honestly.

Totally agree, keep your colors to a minimum. One season I intentionally only fished black plastics, didn’t matter what style, my catches were right on track, actually a higher percentage than trying to vary colors per outing? Black or green baits work in all waters. I’m sure some anglers will totally disagree, but these colors work for me!!!!
