Does Comic-Con have a future in San Diego?

San Diego Comic-Con International will come to a close Sunday, capping off several days of comics, shows, movies, games, activities and everything else pop culture.
Comic-Con 2024 was expected to attract more than 135,000 attendees over its four-day run, generating a regional impact of more than $160 million, which includes both direct and indirect spending by visitors.
In 2022, Comic-Con welcomed more than 135,000 attendees and generated $3 million in hotel and sales tax revenue for San Diego, according to city documents.

What makes you think that Las Vegas will be less expensive for people who need a hotel room? Las Vegas only comps or reduces the cost of a hotel room if you have proven to be a high roller that will spend thousands gambling. The vast majority of Comic Con guests will be spending most if not all of their money at the Con, not at gambling tables. I expect that the hotels in Vegas will end up charging even more for hotel rooms than SF after the 3 year honeymoon period.

The biggest issue for an event like this is that most convention centers are not in a walkable area, surrounded by not just hotels but restaurants, shopping, nightlife, public transit, etc.

Not only that, but like everything else, it's getting to be too expensive for them to continue operating in California. And with all the fast-food chains closing left & right all over the state, it's going to make it even more difficult for the attendees and the convention staff alike (people still have to eat after all.)

I have said the same thing for the East Coast Cons where I live. We don't need an extension in the same week, what we need is to change all of the Cons from once a year to 2 or 3 times per year. It may only be a few days for attendees, but for vendors planning to go out, it's several weeks. They can't do that 2-3 times a year, nevermind all year round.

@@octaviank1287 Speak for yourself. There are tons of vendors who travel from Con to Con selling their wares and thats how they make their living. I know many that have no issue doing it year long. If you find it a hassle to do more than one Con a year, then perhaps your in the wrong business and need to rethink why you chose to be a vendor at the Con in the first place. Vending at Cons should be enjoyable for you and the highlight of your year, if you find it too difficult, a hassle and a chore, then maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place. Not all vendors have a brick and mortar store, some just sell their products exclusively at shows.

@@edwinner100, the LA and Anaheim convention centers are smaller than San Diego. LA has the smallest space for a dealer room, about 67,000. Anaheim has 75,000, but it is broken up into three different rooms. The San Diego convention center has 525,000 of contiguous space. San Diego has 2.5 million square feet. LA has 870 thousand square feet. LA cheats on the size by listing the parking lots, so you have to subtract those. Anaheim has 1,8 million square feet.

No, it was mainstream back then. Early 2000s is when the movies started invading the con and made it a lot more popular. By 2008, it had blown up so much it was hard to find seating anywhere. In the late 90s, attendance was 40,000. In 2008, it was 120,000. By 2008, some aisles were shoulder to shoulder. Not so in the 90s. When I started going there were about 5,000 attendees and it was a real comic con with a definite emphasis on comics. True nerdville and it was great. Shame what its turned into but oh well.

Comic Con started in San Diego and San Diego is known for Comic Con. The mayor of San Diego has to do everything possible to make sure Comic Con stays or San Diego will loose a lot of money and a part of our identity. What people fail to realize is that Comic Con is more than the Convention Center. It is all of Downtown. We have amazing weather here in San Diego and our Downtown area is much cleaner and safer than places in other cities. Again the mayor of San Diego needs to continue to make this a priority. The smaller hotels who are price gouging need to get in line. Many people from out of town not only come to Comic Con but because of our great weather they stay and enjoy San Diego for the rest of the week including our restaurants, the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Lego Land, Balboa Park and on and on. People say the Convention Center is too small so why not open up official Comic Con events to the ballrooms of the neighboring hotels right there next to the Convention Center such as the Hard Rock Hotel, the Hilton, the Hyatt and the Marriot. A temporary tent on the field of Petco Park could also host events. The surrounding areas such as Embarcadero Park and Sea Port Village could also be utilized more. Areas could also be separated by themes like in Walt Disney World in Florida. Our nice weather makes these things possible which is why we have so many amusement parks here in the first place. Downtown San Diego could officially be transformed to host Comic Con much in the same way like we transform Del Mar for the San Diego County Fair. We also have the Comic Con museum and we know how Balboa Park can be transformed to host December Nights. And there is also the option of extending Comic Con for more days. If people still think there is not enough space in Downtown San Diego to host the Comic Con we need new leadership because they are thinking too small. All this will bring continued revenue to San Diego which will be good for everyone involved but if we loose Comic Con, it will be a great loss indeed.

And as long as California continues to be ruled by the same idiotic economic policies, it's going to eventually reach a point where it's too expensive for people to attend the thing at all anymore, regardless of how large the space is or whatever side-attractions there may be. You've already got fast-food chains closing left & right because it's too expensive to operate in this state; other businesses are also following. You still continue to hold ComicCon anywhere in this state, it's going to be like holding it in a ghost town, because there won't be anything for miles around except empty, abandoned stores & restaurants.

Not Los Angeles. TOO much traffic and not enough hotels. Anaheim and Vegas are the only viable answers. Vegas is three times the size of San Diego's convention center. And Vegas can handle 150,0000 attendees with no sweat while having two to three other conventions happening at the same time. And of course. ''IT'S VEGAS BABBY''. Anaheim has a newly expanded Convention Center, tons of hotels, and Disneyland and Downtown Disney are across the street. @@Marcydalmatian, there are several reasons why moving Comic Con to Vegas would be a problem. 1 the date is July and it is very hot in Vegas in July. Not know to many people, conventions have a gentleman’s agreement to not compete against each other. So, most conventions try not to schedule during another convention. Comic Con is locked into the second half of July. 2 The location would remove, unintentionally, some of the writers, artists, and actors. A lot of these people simply have a driving service bring them to the con from the LA area. They do their panels and leave. So, don’t even get hotel rooms, just stay for a panel, autograph signing and leave. 3 The staff. It takes about 1600 volunteers to run the con. Most will not follow the con to another city. Some of these people have been working positions for decades. This impacts everything from getting your badge, to line management. 4 Events outside of the convention center, would be limited or non exist. There is not a lot of hotels or restaurants near the Las Vegas convention center. So, you are stuck eating the convention center food. Over flow to hotels or restaurants, like the Gas Lamp, are not available. The above reasons do not mean Comic Con would not leave San Diego. They are just something’s that need to be considered.

It was not a fie hazard. They got that, unless there is a terror threat. The fire Marshall is always there and they have a good count more or less on who is checked in to the building. It's small but they allow less people in then a bigger place. Maximum occupancy is just that. The convention center tries hard to be well under maximum occupancy. That all being said, it's always crowded like that. ❤

That is not a solution at all, that's just stupid. Crowds are not the problem, even the size of the venue itself isn't the problem, (but it wouldn't hurt if the venue was made a bit bigger to accommodate more guests), price gouging by the smaller lower quality hotels is the main issue here. A better solution would be to enforce a property tax hike to all the hotels in the area who refuse to participate in discounted room rates and setting aside blocks. I think that by adding an extra 20% property tax hike each year to these greedy businesses, that they will rethink ripping off their customers and get on board.

Currently all the taxes on gasoline are tacked on the gasoline sold right now in California . That is why gas in California is higher than many other states because other States don’t have as many taxes on gasoline products

I guess that in order to prevent the hotels from raising their prices and passing it on to their customers, that the state would need to step in and enforce/regulate hotel room pricing with a hard limit based on the quality of the hotel and star rating, as well as room size. The lower the rating the less they are allowed to charge per night. I think that they should base their pricing on current hotel prices throughout all of SF and then average it out. At least that is the method I can think of. I understand that the state is already planning on doing something similar in the next few weeks regarding the Pedicabs and the price gouging that happened this past Con as well as preventing them from playing loud obnoxious music.

@ElloAsty Los Angeles has Anime Expo just before Comic Con so kind of pointless. Sure Anime Expo is more about well Anime and Videogames rather than like DC or Marvel but it would be difficult for the convention center to plan Comic Con if doing Anime Expo in the same month like it has been.
