Sue Blackmore made a name for herself trying to prove that consciousness is a byproduct of neuronal activity ( epiphenomenalism). This is an easy, almost lazy position to take, from the point of view of traditional science which is materialist reductionist. Large amounts of evidence from different fields are pointing to a non material reality as the reality underlying material reality. That's becoming more evident even if not clear ( in the sense that we understand it). Consider advances in the philosophy of science today - monistic idealism as in Kastrup or Goswami or Hoffman or Sheldrake. Fiercely contested, of course, by traditionalists as you would expect including widespread ad hominem attacks without attention to the fine points of the ongoing debate about the nature of Deep Reality. All this unreasonableness and lack of respectful debate is to be expected as one paradigm starts to die angrily, giving way to a better paradigm, slowly and painfully.

Consciousness is what causation looks like.
@BrianNichols854 жыл бұрын
I agree. That was Ayn Rand's conclusion. In this view, consciousness is defined as a process. Causation/interaction itself is an act of "observation". This is born out in the quantum where particles are essentially undefined unless some interaction takes place. This solves the hard problem of consciousness by making consciousness (rudimentary causal "awareness") a fundamental principle of reality. Human consciousness would be something like recursive causation. It's simply what happens when enough microscopic causal agents are arranged in the right way. The same basic pattern of action/reaction is present in atoms all the way up to humans.

According to Hindus, consciousness is reflective. Our external world is perceived by our senses, and the information is reflected in our consciousness. This means that the external is not real, the mirror of our consciousness is only real. Our minds are also reflected in this consciousness, and our bodies. It is like a face in the mirror, the face is not real, it is a reflection. Consciousness itself is pure, but gets contracted by names and forms which we perceive as 'reality'. They say this is true in relative sense, but in absolute sense only the pure consciousness is real.

VV Raman is echoing one of the interpretations of the thought contained in the Vedanta philosophy which seems to point at a kind of absolute monism where consciousness is all that exists. Even matter is only consciousness in this view; and no, there is no God in the sense of a supreme conscious personality, only a (personality-less) consciousness that is devoid of all attributes. This view which is often presented as the dominant Hindu view regarding reality I consider to be a misinterpretation. In reality, Hindu philosophy, the best glimpse of which is obtained in texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, talks about two ontological categories with essential characteristics that are mutually exclusive : 1. Prakrti (primordial matter): unconscious, dead substance. 2. Purusa (conscious personality). The distinction between these two entities is fundamental and persists eternally. God is the supreme purusa, the supremely conscious pure personality that brings prakrti and purusa together. Therefore, once the investigator discovers matter and once he discovers (individual) consciousness within the material body, then the existence of God is inferred, as the supreme principle that binds together these two entities.

We think, therefore god ? That once you reach a certain level of awareness. It's bingo there must be a god. And not just any god. It must their version. The universe is creating temporary order out of the chaos. But that will pass. The universe is on its own path. Separate from us. Even universal consciousness doesn't make any sense. Creating more gaps to stuff a god into, but no answers that say a god is there at all.
@Arunava_Gupta4 жыл бұрын
@@thomasridley8675 I didn't say that ("we think, therefore God"). Mere thinking does not do it. It is the bringing together of two disparate entities of purusa (conscious personality) and prakrti (unconscious matter) in the microcosmic context, the sophisticated inter-wiring of the (transcendental) mind of the conscious personality with the (material) brain (mind-organ).

I think Hindu tradition makes distinction between two levels of thinking; one is way of elite thinkers (represented in upanishads which talk about an impersonal cosmic mind that can be known through meditation)....and the other of ordinary public (represented in Gita and other scriptures that shapes all the personal deity worship/ritual stuff).
@Arunava_Gupta4 жыл бұрын
@@irfanmehmud63 Although that might appear to be so, the fact is--and this is my impression after going through representative samples of the primary texts--that Hinduism is not ultimately monistic as is made out to be. The universe evolves into a state where living beings (for example, with brains) appear that fulfill the condition for the emergent quality of consciousness in those beings to appear. there may be different levels of consciousness. On the experiment with the twin slit of particles hitting with random distribution unless observed by a consciou being/agent, it seems that the particles have observed that an observer was observing them and thus align themselves according to the consciousness that is observing inclination. How those particles knew what the observer's inclination was is another question. So, here was an example of a possible consciousness on a particle made up of just one electron making a decision or reaction based on whether there was an observer or not. The whole universe/s is made up of these very same particles and thus conscious as well? We have now found out that our brain makes a decision even before we make ours and this makes free will a big conundrum. It does look like consciousness as well see it is determined somewhere else different from our own deciding mind. Here we can surmise that our consciousness is separate from our brain. Perhaps our consciouness is but a part of the big consciousness field where we get bits and pieces depending on our tendencies.

That is the odds of winning the Power ball or the Mega Millions. Now, take that blue-painted grain of sand and put it in 2 observable universes filled with sand. What are your odds of picking up that blue-painted grain of sand? That's the odds of making one working protein. To make a simple cell, let alone intelligent life, humans, consciousness is out of the question by chance. You'll have better odds of a 747 jet crashing into a building and having it reassembled itself in perfect working condition than having a working protein by chance. That means creating life had to be done in a very specific, precise way, just as if you were given the instructions to assemble a table off of a manual on a smaller scale. The idea of having a grand designer is not as far-fetched as people may seem to believe. I think she's very closed-minded.

Observing a moving car on the road we may conclude that the car is conscious. The car seem conscious in avoiding any accidents, conscious in staying on the foad, conscious in observing the road signs, conscious in where it going. Who is making the car seems to be conscious? THE DRIVER. If the driver leaves the the car, the car may still be 'alived' but UNCONSCIOUS. Thus when we are asleep, we are still alive but temperorily unconscious. We die in our sleep if our 'consciousness' fail to return to our body. Our consciousness is our 'soul' and is deteched from our body. When we die our body rot and return to the soil but our soul live on with a new body in a new dimension.

God is an unsatisfactory answer & not an explanation. For the sake of argument, let’s assume there is a god. Now, which god is it? The Abrahamic god, the Hindu god, the Buddhist god, or none of the gods proposed by humans? If god exists it just leads to a whole new set of questions about how it came to exist? There’s also no requirement for a god to be benevolent; that’s just projection. It could be malevolent. As it happens I’m a Gnostic Christian & I believe material creation to be evil. We’ve been trapped in a material prison for spirits. Salvation is death, when we are finally freed from this evil universe to be reunited as one consciousness 🙏✝️❤️👽

I believe that once you stipulate that there are non-physical realities, such as an idea or a law of the universe, you have crossed a threshold that must allow for other non-physical realities such as god or cosmic consciousness. I ask myself could it be possible that all of existence has no meaning and always the answer is no. But the concept of meaning itself is a non-physical reality that we recognize. So I am left with a strong intuition that there is something greater to be discovered but have no idea how to define it.

Spirit is the essence of consciousness, the energy of the Universe that creates all things. Each one of us is a part of that Spirit Energy - a Divine Entity. So the Spirit is the Higher Self, the Eternal Being that lives within us. Form is the physical world: body, mind, personality. We as spiritual beings created the physical world as a place to learn. We're here to learn how to master the process of creation - to learn how to consciously channel the creative energy of spirit into physical form. HOW CONSCIOUNESS CREATES REALITY? If God is Reality And if Reality Is Consciousness Then God Is Consciousness I Think therefore I Am God Consciousness The whole universe is one reality which is pure consciousness. Pure consciousness is absolute existence. God makes things through the direct act of becoming the things which He creates. In the beginning the One differentiated into the many. The One entered into the many and became the Self of each. The being within everything is the One. When you merge with this nonlocal Self, you become one with the Self of all that exists. The One is the Higher Self of all. You are the One. The God Spirit In Me Is The Same God Spirit In You, And The Spirit Of All Beings. Enlightenment Is The realization That You Are All Part Of The Universal Spirit Of All That Exists, Which Is GOD. Each of us is the universal spirit projecting a particular point of view. My Self is inseparable from all that exists, just as your self is inseparable from all that exists. You are an aspect of Infinite Intelligence, and Infinite Intelligence is the source of all that exists. Therefore you are the source of all that exists and you create your own experience. Everything is possible because everything exists within you. The same unbounded potential of the Infinite Spirit also resides in each and every one of us. Everything in the universe is consciousness. Space and time in all planes of reality are only projections within universal consciousness. There really is no here or there for everything is at one place where Mind is. Mind does not move at all. Mind simply is (Not to be confused with the brain). Mind is everywhere yet nowhere. Mind is nowhere but Here, Now. We are all existing together as a singularity in one place and time. Everything is one, Here and Now. Your soul is the reflection of all souls. You are the Other. Without the other, you would not exist. You are defined by your relationships with others. You would need to describe the whole universe in order to define a single person. Therefore every single person is the whole universe. Your soul is both personal and universal at the same time. Everyone is a reflection of yourself. You are in a hall of mirrors where every reflection of yourself appears different. Others you admire reflect the qualities you most cherish in yourself. Others you detest reflect the qualities you most deny in yourself. Each person you see is a different version of you. The outer world is a mirror of yourself at any place and time. If you want to know the state of your personal consciousness, just look around and see what is happening to you. If you want to know the state of the collective consciousness, just look around at what is happening in the world. Your personal reality is synchronistically orchestrated by your sense of Self at all times. If a critical mass of people expressed their higher selves, they would cause a transformation in collective consciousness and the world reality. Every time a person rises in personal consciousness, he moves the state of the world towards a higher one than before. TRANSCENDENT WORLD: You are comfortable here when you can experience all possibilities. Your awareness is open. You are connected to the source. Your consciousness is merged with the mind of God. SUBTLE WORLD: You are comfortable here when you can hold on to your vision. You trust yourself to follow where the mind goes. You aren't bound up in resistance, objections, skepticism, and rigid beliefs. Inspiration occurs as a normal part of your existence. MATERIAL WORLD: You are comfortable with your personal reality. You take responsibility for it. You read the world as a reflection of who you are and what is happening "in here." As the reflection shifts and changes, you track the changes occurring inside yourself. If a white man was created by God, And if a black man was created by God, Black and white men are equal before God. If God is reality, And if reality is consciousness, Then God is consciousness The Need to Create, Discover, and Explore. God becomes a creative source. He gave us our birthright of curiosity. He remains unknowable, but he unfolds one secret after another in creation. At the far edge of the universe, the unknown is a challenge and a source of wonder. God wants us not to worship but to evolve. Our role is to discover and explore. Nature exists to provide endless mysteries that challenge our intelligence - there is always more to discover. This is your God if you live to explore and be creative, if you feel happiest confronting the unknown, if you have total confidence that nature can be unraveled, including human nature, as long as we keep questioning and never settle for fixed, preordained truth. God becomes pure wonder. After reason has reached the limits of understanding, the mystery remains. Sages, saints, and the divinely inspired have penetrated it. They have felt a divine presence that transcends everyday life. Materialism is an illusion. Creation was fashioned in two layers, the visible and the invisible. Miracles become real when everything is a miracle. To reach God, one must accept the reality of invisible things. Nature is a mask for the divine. This is your God if you are a spiritual seeker. You want to know what lies behind the mask of materialism, to find the source of healing, to experience peace, and to be in direct contact with a divine presence. Unity, the State Beyond All Needs. God becomes One. There is complete fulfillment because you have reached the goal of seeking. You experience the divine everywhere. The last hint of separation has vanished. You have no need to divide saint from sinner, because God imbues everything. In this state, you don't know the truth; you become it. The universe and every event in it are expressions of a single underlying Being, which is pure awareness, pure intelligence, and pure creativity. Nature is the outward form that consciousness takes as it unfolds in time and space. This is your God if you feel totally connected to your soul and your source. Your consciousness has expanded to embrace a cosmic perspective. You see everything happening in the mind of God. The ecstasy of great mystics, who seem especially gifted or chosen, now becomes available to you, because you have fully matured spiritually. The God that brings the scheme to an end, God as One, is different from the others. He isn't a projection. He signifies a state of total certainty and wonder, and if you reach that state, you are no longer projecting. Every need has been fulfilled; the path has ended with reality itself.

Please, dear psychologist Ms. Sue, consciousness is no more a mystery as you think. There is a lot of things we don't know, it is true, but consciousness is no more a mystery. Please! Every single moment the heart pumps the blood to the brain, the mind concocts consciousness which harbors the will and makes a representation of the world to the individual. In the will we have desire governed by reason. In the representation we have memories. Consciousness is a function of the frequency of the fields over the heart, the cardiac output, and the entropy. Any individual who lacks one of these three things will lose consciousness. When your heart enters into fibrillation, you have a cardiac arrest and you lose consciousness and die. If the volume of the blood decrease, you faint and if the entropy steps out of its limits, you lose consciousness (sleep). Consciousness is fundamental. And we have three levels of consciousness available. The higher consciousness, what we call God emanates from the immaterial realm and permeates and pervades everything in the material realm. In humans, the higher consciousness is manifested as medium consciousness. Everything below humans is lower consciousness. And consciousness is as discrete and continuous as light is particles and waves. It comes to us discrete but expresses itself continuously.
