The conversation discusses the turnaround of Eskom, the South African power utility, under the leadership of CEO Dan Marokane. It is revealed that corruption was not the main issue with Eskom, but rather the reliance on coal. Marokane prioritized fixing coal power stations, met with staff, and allowed them to do their jobs, resulting in no load shedding for close to three months. The conversation also touches on the green agenda and the need to use available resources, such as coal and nuclear energy, before transitioning to renewable sources. Overall, the conversation highlights the positive impact of the new CEO and the stability of electricity supply in South Africa.

As the EU elections approached, the multicultural politicians grew increasingly anxious about losing power. The specter of South Africa descending into chaos loomed large, threatening to undermine their vision of a diverse, harmonious Europe. The 1994 miracle, where South Africa emerged as a rainbow nation, was their shining example. But now, corruption, mismanagement, and relentless load-shedding plagued the country, casting a dark shadow over their ideals. Desperate to keep the dream alive, they orchestrated a covert operation. Free diesel and emergency generators were discreetly supplied to Eskom. European taxpayers’ money flowed into South Africa, shoring up the beleaguered government. It was all done in the name of staving off the rise of far-right nationalist parties in Europe. To the public, the beautiful dream of South Africa remained intact. The politicians breathed a sigh of relief, their power secured for another term. But beneath the surface, the price of maintaining that illusion grew ever steeper. Marine Le Pen watched from the sidelines, sensing the fragility of their facade.

De Ruyter is owed an apology - only after he exposed what was going on did the government spring into action and release the funds he had been begging them for for years. In fact, what is happening now is a part of the legacy he left behind. If it was not for him then none of this would have happened and we would have been worse off now.

Going after De Ruyter is extremely simplistic - once the ANC realised that load shedding was THE critical election issue they marshalled the troops and put a stop to a lot of the systemic issues that he faced. Also remember the issues wasn’t the burning of coal at all. It was the quality of the coal being put into the burners. Nuclear is cheap far out your guys need to look beyond the SA bubble and see what has happened around the world with nuclear projects….. massively expensive and complex - not even close to the cost of renewables.

"the 1960s was met with new power stations being built, some of which were the “most advanced” and “modern” in the world." SA 1960 Vs. Medupi and kusile under BEE Anc cant run a week without breaking or even exploding. With SA Oil isolation due to apartheid the coal to oil strategy was put in place. Later SASOL was started to fight sanctions and they found fossil fuel and natural gas could becomd petroleum to help SA and eskom needs. Today Sasol has no petrol stations and is kinda dead... All due respect to Dan Marokane who is a very capable and qualified CEO, but people always think things happen on a dime. De Ruyter resigned in Feb 2023. Maintenance recovery plan (with OEMs) was adopted by board in March 2023. It takes months to plan, including setting the budget. In April 2023, Treasury took 254 billion in debt over from Eskom, which was also months in the planning. Connect the dots. Btw, large nuclear plants take a decade or more to build with huge additional cost overruns the norm, and SMRs have not been commercialized yet, or licensed. And btw, when Eskom was Global Power Company of the Year in 2001, its EAF was 90%. The mighty has fallen quite far.

I do still believe De Ruyter still did a very important task of coming public with the disfunction of Eskom. Agree he should never have thrown coal out the window, naive to say the least. However, someone did need to come in and write a book about the need for proper business management and the end of political interference at Eskom.

Sadly … the question is where did our coal go for all these past years ????? What about the price the small businesses had to pay for this lie for years ???? Nope this will NOT FLY !!!

The problem is that the ANC government signed international agreements at COP to promote green energy. De Ruyter was trying to fix things while staying within the agreements the government entered.

No I think not. Where I stay and work (80km apart) we are without electricity daily. Anywhere from 2 - 4 hours every day. To protect the grid they say ...

Yeah, wait until you see their financials after burning through billions of Rands of diesel and they klap you with a 44% tariff increase. But hey, what is 44%, at least you have electricity which you should be thankful for.

The Private Sector in South Africa brought significant relief to the Power Grid ( Solar ) but our standards are so low now that we are all praising Eksom for what keeping my lights on at home WHAT ABOUT HEAVY COMMERCIAL CAPACITY which eskom lost in 1998 that truly creates jobs etc fok weet as jy skrik skrik net fokken wakker ZA will still fall with its multiparty rubbish we need more than power we need capacity ag HERE TOG more than double then we can say it is fixed.

@JayOz1
@JayOz1 Ай бұрын
Yeah Gents, perhaps a clickbaity title with this one because we South Africans most definitely do not owe Eskom an apology. No need to apologise after they are just simply doing their job now. Something they weren't doing before...also In order for Eskom to function the corruption FIRST had to be exposed (which was done mostly under De Ruyter) and restrictions on coal use lifted. Now they must just simply do their jobs and provide enough power for all South African homes and businesses and create a good track record. Then perhaps after 10 years of good quality service and no loadshedding we can then look at giving good praise and recognition to them. But first Eskom must clean their image.
