Use a silicone grease on the rubber bit around the rim to ensure a seal. Might help.

I decided to stick with oem after a year of k&n. I don’t believe it’s worth it unless I do racing and win money that allows me to often rebuild the engine.

hi Funny bout this topic . From ag machinery experience half the problem was the air intake position getting sprayed with dust ,then the filtration system . Machine fitted with spinner precleaner then Donaldson with secondary finer media safety filter then paper filter ontop of engine . This did not stop the intake from getting a finer coat of dust internally . So fine u could basically say its just dirty air stain . Only 10-20% of the Hilux issue To get rid of this a finer filter was used [oiled foam] . No more dusting . All clean air .

Awesome mate. I’ve been running a k&n filter since new. This proves that they actually do work great, in dusty conditions.

It looks like he hasn't greased the rubber seal around the edge of the filter. The dust may be getting past the edge??

Add a pre-filter easy. I use home AC filters, cut to size then it's good to go for me.

My K&N filter is lightly oiled and I never see dust ever. Could it be creeping in the seal as that back corner had dust going up a long way.

Maybe send a oil sample in of the old oil at the next service and check the silicone content.

Toyota air boxes are a joke. Its called planned obselescence, ie planned dusted engines. I spent a lifetime working on earth moving machinery and have seen how a correctly designed air filtration system keeps the air intake protected in very much worse conditions than driving up a dirt track.
@dinosshed3 жыл бұрын
Keeping in mind it only takes a few grams of dust to cause irreparable damage to an engine. Panel filters are not up to the task of outback style dust filtration, that's why you don't see them being used on trucks, tractors, earthmover or any other heavy-duty machinery. What works is a radial sealed cylindrical filter such as a Donaldson or what the Ford Courier 99 through 2006 wl - t diesel utilised. Having a snorkel on a late model four wheel drive is only good for one thing and that is preventing water ingestion, they most definitely do not improve performance as they're often poorly designed with restrictions adding more turns and length to the intake. The standard air intake will already be optimised for anything other than a water crossing. Those who fit them are reducing power and injesting more debris.

Does the oil filter remove dust/silica before enough accumulates to cause engine damage? Or does it just keep accumulating over the life of the engine until there is enough to wear it out? I've got a cone filter and live in a deserty environment so it's got me a bit concerned I'm ingesting dust. I'm hoping the engine can handle minute amounts of dust at a time?

I’ve never blocked the one way valve. Why would you? It’s the dump point for the spinner that seperates the dirt and dust from the air. When I was on Fraser my air box was clean. But just outside the one way valve was a pile of sand. If you leave the snorkel head forward, a pre filter from Uni filter will keep out the large junk. It’s basically an oiled foam sock that goes over the head of the filter. I highly rate these. They are cheap and effective. You can get a 3 pack for around $45 and they can be washed oiled and reused.

They are definitely not designed for that. That is emissions garbage that should have never been added to an engine in the first place. They sacrifice engine life for supposed environmental reasons.@@Robert-cu9bm

I experimented years ago on a new Patrol which had Steinbauer, Scott’s Rods 3 inch mandrel bent steel hi flow exhaust from dump pipe through, manual snorkel and of course K&N air filter. I was never in dusty conditions however, from factory it appeared to work well. Cleaning was impossible and I oiled both sides, wrapped in cling wrap into the sun turning once an hour each side. The next air filter inspection revealed oil bypass up the clean side tube. I wasn’t going to spend hours trying to get the Damm thing clean, stayed Genuine only on the Air filter ever since. Many don’t know that they use either a Silicone, oil etc on the medium during manufacture, and like the K&N, it’s THIS that normally makes them work (filter) well. I was surprised that it did not work here. Never again will I waste my time and effort cleaning those bloody things again. I also believe my MAF sensor was coated in an oil film that you can only feel between fingers when taken off the side walls near the MAF sensor. In dusty/abrasive sandy environments cyclonic air filters theoretically should work if not broken and emptied. There are additives that increase the ability of the oil to hold more SOOT in suspension and thus keep the engine from internal wear compared to not using this additive. It was proven by heavy mining equipment (front end loaders/ dump trucks) that made the wear considerably less by using this product. It saved the company millions, not only from needing to strip the engine down at traditional engine hours, but the machine was still working increasing productivity substantially. You can read all about this supplier at cost effective maintenance here in Oz. We have 3 diesels in our family and they all use this anti wear agent. From memory (I could be wrong), I thought it said tests showed the oil could take twice/more than twice the soot per unit of oil. I think other engineering tests on the samples were proven that this was no snake oil. On their website you are able to download a book showing many test cases.

Martin it is you that created this problem. As you stated it worked well until you messed with it. This is also always the case with MAF issues ect ect. The problem now is people like yourself complain and express themselves online which gives the brand ( K&N ) a bad name.

That’s not the K&N filter letting dust through, that’s the air box not seating the seal properly, this has been seen on other Toyota air boxes as well. I run a K&N in my 95 series petrol Prado and no dust has ever got past it. The air box is much more robust than later model vehicles.

It doesn't matter whether its a K & n or a OEM filter...Dust will make its way through either one of them.. Remember its a car air filter not a N95 mask..Also cleaning the K & n way to early is not good..let that layer of dirt soaked up in the filter oil build up which enhances filteration process
