Diffusion really makes a difference by making a light source larger in relation to the subject, allowing it to wrap around the subject I use a similar sheet but I clip it up in a more landscape orientation to maximize on it's ability to wrap around my subject, then place the light at an optimal position to fill out the sheet of diffusion for an even spread of light All in all you lose a lot of potential light output but you trade it off for a larger/softer light source

Horizontal is such a smart move!

Your experiments with different setups and the side-by-side comparisons are really helpful in understanding what is happening. Thanks for putting these together!

Thanks John. I figure if I’m going to do it for myself anyways I might as well film it !

ehm, soft shadows depending on the size of the light source. The size is always relative. The size is always the size of the last diffusion relative to the space. The sun is "big" but without clouds it is a hard light, with clouds, the clouds are more or less the light source and closer and bigger and so softer ... .

Great video Mike! This helps a lot, since I'm currently trying to figure out how to optimise my budget lighting setup for my videos. I have a big shower curtain, which spits the light everywhere, but your hint about negative diffuser to absorb that light on one site totally makes sense and I will test it out. Thanks for sharing!

Shower curtains are such underrated tools for film making!! Plus they’re only a couple bucks!

I try to put the diffuser as close as possible to the face so you have a nice rolloff :)
