Thanks for these videos. Safety first y’all! I’ve had multiple people with MCL and ACL repairs that using their knee brace with the metal bars on the side eliminate knee pain when riding.

There's genius in these explanations. The more I listen to Learning with Leary, the more I understand the physics of this board.

do you have recommendations for learning to ride switch?
@TheFloatLife3 жыл бұрын
Just force yourself to do it. It feels so odd at first but the more you do it the more natural it feels. Take note of what you do when riding regular and focus on each of those things one by one when going switch. 🤙
@JakeLeary3 жыл бұрын
Practice braking. You’re used to putting your weight towards the left or right side of your body to brake, and when it’s reversed you’ll be awkward and slower at first. I also like to make sure my front foot is angled forward so that I can run out if I need to.

Coming at this from snowboarding, its a serious upgrade to able to switch stances and get such different results. Much to ponder here Jake - thanks as always to you n' the Float folks.

Thanks for these lessons. I’m a new rider about 35 miles . My back calf gets cramps and because of this I have to stop quite often. To help i have my font foot close to the tire & back foot towards the tail , do you have any other ideas? Thanks
@TheFloatLife3 жыл бұрын
The more you ride, the less your body will have to work to keep you balanced. I assume you get cramps because you're still getting used to riding and controlling the board so you legs are working hard. Keep riding and try to relax those muscles 🤙
@Lurch6853 жыл бұрын
Make sure to stretch, too! Make use of curbs and such. I still have these issues and I’m 350 miles in, though far less often (and I have a lower starting point than most due to medical woes)

thanks for a great informative series tutorials I'm hooked :) the question I need help with: new to Onewheel xr 50 miles experience under my belt but I still get ache in my rear foot arch i have tried lots different foot positions and cant seem to find a natural position that takes pressure off my rear foot arch. any suggestions I tend to ride with my heals in and toes slightly out
@TheFloatLife3 жыл бұрын
Do you have a concave rear footpad? That always helps a ton. Then it's about tying not to pinch with your toes while you ride and keep your feet relaxed as possible 🤙
@JakeLeary3 жыл бұрын
@@TheFloatLife 100% agree with above. I think eventually you will build up the muscles in your foot, but for now you can also try standing further towards the rear of the board (front foot closer to the tire). It’s really important to avoid gripping your toes down, keep the weight on the balls of your feet
@Scream4Cheese3 жыл бұрын
Keep riding and the pain will go away as your muscles get adapted to the routine.

Hey Jake, taking you up on the offer... I get knee pain in my leading leg (left leg,regular stance) - I do two hour sessions, mainly trail riding. Any tips? I tell myself to ‘stay light’ on the board and try and keep my legs bent and bouncy but the Aussie terrain is gnarly and shakes up the legs.
@JakeLeary3 жыл бұрын
Yeah man rough terrain can really do a number. I would try and see if your left knee is staying straight on those bumps, in line with foot and hip, or if it’s moving to the left or right side. Does it hurt on the front or back of the knee? Top or bottom? And left or right side? Does it hurt when you ride or after?
@skatetakes17063 жыл бұрын
Cheers. Good tip to give it some analysis. The pain is below the knee cap, but I’ll look at alignment etc. Hopefully it’s not just a symptom of being over 40 😔

0:30 It's the perfect moment to say something about this kind of shoes: DO NOT RIDE WITH RUNNING SHOES. Running shoes are designed to perfect the forward movement. They are absolutely bad at allowing you to have side mobility with your foot. WORSE: this is the perfect kind of shoe to help you get an ankle twist as when you'll fall on the edge of the shoe it will FORCE your foot in either one direction between the normal stance and the twisted ankle stance. Ensure you're using proper shoes that allow your ankle to have nice side mobility! This will avoid you bad falls and twisted ankles.

This video is perfectly timed as I’m 350 miles in on my Pint and starting to experience some knee pain, but it’s FROM angling my back foot? It’s weird. I gotta change up my stance periodically as I ride to rest my muscles.

I'm loving how much this series breaks riding down to the most basic elements. Some of it is obvious and intuitive but it's still nice to hear it explained so clearly why certain things seem to work better in certain situations.
@deanaoxo3 жыл бұрын
Adrian i wanted to say the same thing, but you said it. Professor, i'm blown away not only by your clear, precise explanations, but the reasoning behind them. I've been having a lot of trouble w front foot pain and fatigue. I recently glued some rubber flooring in a very precise concave manner to the front, and this has helped tremendously. My rear foot seems to be okay most of the time. I have ridden boards with different rear concave pads, but i tend to ride with my rear foot near the tire, so those don't really effect me as much. Naturally, i'll keep experimenting, and riding every chance i get. XR since xmas, 684 miles, i turned 67 yesterday. Aoxomoxoa

@@JakeLeary I've never noticed either one predominate. I'm lousy at switch, always have been though i've been practicing 'going backwards' at least one time each time i ride.

I had ACL surgery and riding kills my back knee (the one that got work done) I can do maybe 1-2 hours on my XR+ but would love to do more. I used to hit 10+ miles on my longboard before everything but it's been at least 10 years since I rode, had my XR+ for two days but I'm in so much knee pain, if anyone can help please do.

I learned with Leary while riding in Davis with him and Travis that tubeless tire plugs don't last forever and if you do a drop you might have a lot of sealent spraying in your face afterwards 😂 #whisperproblems
