That is some of the most amazing high speed footage, plus the "math" on speed I have ever seen... Thanks guys! I've been pushing your channel to both my kids friends and a few teachers... Amazing Very interesting questions :) & truly a fun science experiment * The speed of sound in glass is 4540 m/s (~13 times the speed of sound in air 343m/s at 20C) vs the 1650 m/s speed of crack propagation in tempered glass (that you have mentioned) @ 12:40 the cracks propagated in glass faster than the bullet that was passing in the air above it (it passed it despite the fact that that bullet was shot before the bullet that hit the glass!) *super sonic bullets profile was a nice bonus * throw in a shot gun for some "gratuitous violence" 😂
@baselsteel4976
@baselsteel4976 10 ай бұрын
I guess you mentioned the "glass speed" (i.e. the linear propagation of cracks in the direction parallel to the bullet)=1400m/s vs 823 m/s for the bullet (super sonic in air) but I was too mesmerized by the footage that I didn't see it! (definitely want to keep such notes a bit longer on the screen in upcoming videos) 👍

As usual - this reveals details hardly imagined. Certainly the propagation speed of the stressed glass shattering is amazing. One other thing I wonder is - laminated glass, as per windshield - how much bullet deformation and how much deviation from original flight path, etc. Also, what happens to accuracy when something like a 40cal cop bullet is fired thru windshield from within. Great work guys. :)

In the dual bullet edge shot at 12:54 you missed something that you hypothesized earlier, which is that the crack propagates "faster than a speeding bullet". Note that the free moving bullet above the glass was leading the bullet that hit the end of the glass, but then the wave from the edge shot beat the free moving bullet to the end of the glass, thus traveling faster than the free moving bullet. This means that the shock wave traveled faster than whatever FPS that .223 round was moving at.

Great video! I'm a 25 year glazier and have seen a lot of bullet holes in plate, and a ton of shot out windows with tempered. I've cut glass most of my carrier, broken a lot of tempered glass, and know it well. Tempered glass does break faster than the speed of sound. That's why there is a loud pop when it explodes. Pressure is what makes plate glass break more. Smaller, faster projectiles create less fractures because there is less force exerted on the glass. The buckshot is the most exciting on plate because of the more projectiles creating force with every hit. I love glass and I love guns.

Glass is cooled with Tension inside no matter how it cools. That's part of how it stays clear to us. So what can happen is when you start a break, it doesn't have to break like other solids, it can literally expend all that excess in an explosion that exceeds the amount of force you imparted.
