Funny story : I spent 32 years living in South Africa and in the last house I owned there I installed bullet proof glass in most of the windows of the house, one night during an attempted home invasion one of the gang of common spotted velcro crested wallet snatchers that were attempting to get in the house lost his patience and took 2 shots at the living room window, he was so close that the glass from the round impacting came back at him and blinded him...he was an employee of the garden service I used to maintain the garden, the idiot still had the nerve to come to work the next week with a bandage over one eye...I often wonder if he survived the 10 year prison sentence he received, the weak don`t live long in the SA prison system...

About that cracks coming from the edge towards the middle in that one 50 cal shot: In solid state physics there are different kinds of pressure waves traveling in a medium. I'm not a solid state physicist, but as far as I know there are s-waves and p-waves. P-Waves are pressure or compression waves (or longitudinal waves), where atoms in the glass are moving towards each other. Sound in air is an example of P-Waves. In S-Waves or shear waves (or transverse waves), atoms in the lattice move side to side much like a rope wave. The key insight to start to understand the cracking phenomena is that s- and p- waves have different group speeds in a material. So when the bullet is hitting the glass from the front, it starts a transverse wave, and once the bullet penetrates (which is also slightly later) it forces glass outwards, starting a longitudinal wave. Secondly, material stresses concentrate on the edges of any sufficiently hard/brittle material. So when the first wave hits the edge, it does so with so much power, that the stresses exceed the yield strength and the glass shatters from the outside in. At least this is my theory/understanding, feel free to correct me. This is why I love High-Speed Imagery, it reveals complex physics in (somewhat) everyday scenarios. Another fascinating addition to S- and P- Waves: In earth quakes, both types of waves are created, but S-Waves do the main damage. Shearing rock is much easier than compressing the rock. Therefor, P-Waves travel faster, but at lower amplitudes (or magnitudes). Animals, such as dogs, are much more sensitive to P-Waves than humans, which you see on countless videos on here, where dogs get nervous before an earth quake hits.

15:58 The speed of sound in heavy borosilicate glass is 3980 m/s (the speed of sound in air = 343 m/s) That's how it is possible. The shock wave of the impact met the edge of the pane and initiated fracturing at the edge. The fracturing occurs slower than the speed of sound in the material.

The cracks bouncing off the edge of the panel faster than the speed of sound is probably a result of there being 2 speed(s) of sound in laminate glass: longitudinal and transverse. The longitudinal speed of sound is significantly faster than the transverse, same as for S-waves and P-waves in earthquakes.

Sweet video! Btw sound travels much faster in glass than it does in air. The initial impact creates a shockwave in both the glass and air, so the edge of the glass receives the stress of the impact site stretching it way faster than the shockwave in air reaches it

10:33 I think you're absolutely correct about the Schlieren effect. My theory is that the light hits the bullets then goes through the first layer of glass which have a different refractive index than air, reflects in the second layer and return back out again to the camera. I believe the Schlieren effects happens the first pass through the glass, and that ideally there would have been better without the second pass through the glass (after the reflection). You can see the super sonic cone from the tip of the bullet as well. I believe 'vapour trail' is regular turbulence as the shock wave keep the air behind the cone subsonic. PS: This is my unqualified opinion.
