Does God Need Me to Pray for What I Need?

When we are struggling spiritually or experiencing some physical suffering we can find ourselves asking the question; "Is God listening to my prayer?"
Since he already knows what we need before we even ask him, should we just trust in his providence? Is it an either or?
Today Fr Mike encourages us with examples from scripture to highlight that we ought to both pray for what we need as well as trust that God hears our prayers and will respond according to his good will and pleasure.

Lol. We had that happen once. We didn't realize it was his parents' church and they complimented us on how our kids were behaved in Mass, just to find out who they were the parents of 🤣. Though his mom sounds like she must keep him humble bc she was like, it's no big deal. It was also funny bc my MIL asked him to bless us and he thanked God for our openness to life... Just for us to find out we had a surprise baby the next month. We were shocked wondering if the Holy Spirit had told him or what 😳.

From what I have experienced it is both an individuals actions and prayer. I was recently in a abusive situation with nowhere else to live and I took the risk of just running away and living in a hospital to ask for help.luckily, the people there moved me to a different place. I was attending Mass at the same time praying while all this happened. I was glad to escape an evil environment in search of good godly people to help me. So that is why I say it takes both prayer and actions to have your needs fulfilled.

I've learned some things while praying to God. He never gives you what you want but rather what you need from Him. And He will give you what you need from Him when you're asking on the behalf of someone else. For example asking God for a new truck He's not going to give you what you want. But asking Him to earn enough money to get a new truck to get you to and from your job in order to provide for your wife and children He's going to help you out because that is a need. Also for example a loved one is sick and dying and you ask Him to help them and they died anyway. He did help them by ending their suffering and hopefully also helped them prepare themselves for death. He gives people what they need from Him not what they want. Life is about hardships and suffering with a few moments of happiness which is why those moments are precious and why they are fleeting. Which is why people should show kindness and charity towards each other because life is difficult.

oh, thank you a lot for this video, very helpful… amazing this video popped up so in time for me… i am being Protestant, feeling right now as God is calling me to move to Catholic or Prthodox church. today as I was praying the rosary, a thought came to me to pray one station for my need, but then I caught myself on the reflection “maybe it is too selfish, as you know everything, my Lord, you will provide as I put your Kingdom first…” the catholics and orthodox christians seem to me to be more sacrificial and putting other first…. I asked God to let my children have a closer relationship with their grandparents because they lived so far away. God in his infinite wisdom allowed me to have stage four breast cancer at the age of 38 with four small children all boys, ages , 9, 7, 5, and 3. It was the best gift that God could’ve ever given me. I had to trust in him completely statistics in 1995 for a stage, four breast cancer patient whose cancer has metastasized to the spine and the liver was bleak at best long-term survival rate of six months I was paralyzed, trying to make a decision to do I does chemotherapy etc. etc. etc., or just as the doctor said the medicine to keep me comfortable, and by Christmas I would be gone. God help me every step of the way I had to turn my cancer diagnosis and treatment over to Him. Never again was my outlook on the glory of God and the beauty of sunrises sunsets, skipping down the sidewalk with my son, being able to teach them how to ride a bike, being able to change diapers and do dishes and love it thanking God every minute.

I feel this. After my obligatory prayer recitals I usually just "rap" with the Lord for about 15 minutes and open my heart. It is very cathartic, like therapy. Although I have tried not to ask that much for myself but instead spread the prayers out for others. If you dont fully trust the Lord it sort of defeats the purpose of prayers

God knows what we want, but sometimes we dont really know what we want until we say it out loud. Sometimes we need to repeat it, not because God doesnt hear us, but because some of us lose our focus. Prayer can really help get our minds set up right . Or atleast it does for me.

Hello Father Mike, I was born in the 50's and I had a wonderful childhood, big Catholic family, lots of brothers and sisters, loving parents and every Christmas was so wonderful, the best times of my life. Mom and dad are gone now, my twin brother was murdered, my family has sadly slipped away and communication is somewhat rare. I life alone and every Christmas is just sad and depressing, how I wish things were different but every year is worse, I'm losing purpose to push on, I feel my health failing and how I wish things had ended up differently and it's so difficult to see people and families together celebrating this joyous season. Life is tough and how I wish things has ended up differently.

Peter, I am so sorry to hear that you are feeling lonely this season. I come from a big family and reading your comment, I can see how I could take it for granted that these people will always be around. Your situation sounds so difficult, especially the trauma of the loss of your brother. Fr. Mike did a great homily on the feast of the Ascension about the "Cloud of Witnesses": all the saints and people who have gone before us who are cheering us on as we near the finish line of life. I recommend listening to it, it may help you not feel so alone. And I don't know about your parish, but mine has a lot of volunteer opportunities (even low-commitment ones like being a greeter, if your health is failing) and groups like Bible studies that you may think about trying out, just to try to build a little more community around you. If you email your parish office, they may have a suggestion. God bless and I am praying for you.

I know of a couple who had two sons; the one developed bone cancer and died as a teenage. They grieved terribly but felt that God would not do anything to their other son. That He took the one son from them but still gave them another son to have and to love and enjoy. They were confident and trusted with faith in the Lord. Within 5 years of the death of the first son, the second son died in a head on collision which was not his fault. The father nearly lost his mind over it. I myself have been struggling with an emotional illness for 44 years and at times it’s gotten so bad I can’t function and wish I was never born. Years of therapy and medication haven’t done much. And you’re telling me these things are God’s love? God’s caring? I wanted o get married in my mid twenties and I did everything to find someone suitable for me. Oddly enough, the Catholic men dated treated me the worst. Finally after 20 years I found my wonderful husband who is not Catholic and I fear for his soul because he doesn’t believe in Jesus. I was almost 50 years old when I got married; I suffered many disappointments and heartbreaks over those years and my prayers seemed to fall on deaf ears. And ironically, my husband has stage 3 kidney disease and was diagnosed prior to my meeting him. So not only did I have to wait all my life to get married, and not be able to conceive at such an old age, but God couldn’t even give me a healthy husband after all I went through…..but this is God’s love and God’s caring??? What sins did I commit to be condemned to these things in my life because punishment is the only answer in my opinion. I’ve prayed, attended Mass, pleaded with God. Whatever happened to miracles?? Is that something He only did 2000 years ago? So we have no hope of a miracle in our lives I guess, but I still continue praying for them. Maybe I should give up. I’ve thought about that family who lost both sons several times over the years and can’t help but think why was that necessary?? To take both of their sons from them?? And these were not bad people. I hate to hear you speak sometimes Fr Mike for you just make me feel worse than I already do. God’s love and God’s caring?? No, you’re wrong. Why can’t you say something to give people hope instead of just further despair? As I lie here in bed taking pills to escape reality….

I always pray for the world, what's happening in my local are and the world, thank god for what hes done, pray for those close to me and if I have something on my mind like my vocation, or illness or a troubling event in my life I open myself to God and ask for help, I never expect because my will is not always aligned with Gods will and always trust that no matter what its the right thing. I always feel that prayer is a conversation with my beat friend, my father, someone who I'm closer with than anyone else, so why wouldn't I ask for help, because even if God already knows, I know from my experiences with close friends and family, to say it out loud can be a great healer in itself, because you take your worry and express it and put it out to pasture to share, to take it from my focal worry, to focus on other things, so by asking God for help, I take it out of myself and through Gods help I start to see solutions and paths that when it's all your focused on you cant see.

Showtimes what we want is obvious, like healing from cancer. Oftentimes, however, we have so many issues it is hard to tell which one is the most urgent or serious. I say this ias a mother, wife, and grandmother. So many lives I care deeply for, with different needs and demands. I ask Mother Mary to dispose of my prayers as she seems fit because she knows better than me. She knows what I want for each one of my children and grandchildren at this moment, and she knows my happiness is in them, and only she knows what is the most prevalent and beneficial thing in the present for a better future. I cannot see the future. I pray for Faith, Hope, and Charity. I ask the Holy Spirit for Wisdom and Courage. Jesus, I trust in you.

Oh, this talk really hit me in the heart, Father. Healing and ProvidenceI… I am one who draws a blank when asked what I want and I have trust issues, yet I am full of yearnings. When I say a prayer for instance, to wonderful Saint Padre Pio or St. Jude that says “state your intention here” I sometimes say please read my heart. But I understand what you are saying that it is important to verbalize it because it humbles me as I am asking for what I want. Maybe I can pray for that: the ability to trust.

Sometimes during my prayer life reading books written by wise people in the secular world who keep their faith or lack thereof private helps me too. I finished reading the book called, "Stop Spending Strategies to Transform Wasteful Habits Start MAnaging" which was written by Tanya Menon and LEigh Thompson. Now I am going to read the book called "Atlas of the HEart Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experiences" written by Brene Brown. While trying to navigate well during my now very complicated set of human relationships.
