I really needed this video today. I just got out of an unexpected week long hospital stay where I almost lost my life. These past couple of weeks have been so scary and tough because, since coming home, my entire life has been flipped upside down. I'm not allowed to do much other than rest in bed for the next few months. All my summer plans, both with friends and my church, have suddenly been taken from me. As someone who typically wears themselves thin with service and even personal hobbies like daily exercise, I feel...useless now. I'm definitely someone who often gauges my worth by how much I can accomplish every day. I had to have a long talk with God the other night and realize that it's okay to have times of rest and being sick in bed and unable to attend mass definitely doesn't make God love me or anyone else any less. And maybe I should use this time to learn how to pray, serve, or learn about God in a different way. Father Mike's videos sure always come at the right time for me. Thank you!

I'm so sorry you've endured so much!! I can semi relate: I broke my tailbone and chest in a Snowboarding accident....I literally work out 5-6 days week ..2-3 hrs/day. I made that such a priority in life.. Always have. I felt so useless after those injuries... The first day home was awful!! It was extremely painful but God never gives us anything we can't handle! I feel your attitude is 100% correct!! God will heal you (keep the faith!) faster than expected! That happened for me! Just take this time to relax and focus on yourself. He never ever leaves you! 🙏❤️

Sometimes I think we also get lost in the notion that in order to serve the Church we have to serve at a church. But one thing that I have learned as a mother is that so often we serve the Church without thinking about it. When I feed my baby, he is part of the Church, and so I am feeding the Church. When I comfort my husband as he struggles with his job, I am comforting the Church. When I hang out with a friend and just bring her joy, I am bringing joy to the Church. For me, this has been a truth that not only relieves me of the guilt of not volunteering more, but it also brings Christ and His Chirch into a more intimate part of my life.

Yes exactly! I take care of my husband who is paralyzed. When I take care of him and tend to his wounds, I look at it as tending to the wounds of Jesus. This is one of the great graces that I have been given by the Lord. So many more graces have been given to me by just taking care of my husband that I know I am right where I should be and do not become upset if I can't make daily mass or weekly Adoration or volunteer. I so needed this! I still need it! Thank you Father Mike. Our mission takes us deeper into the heart of Jesus with whom we have relationship and identity as beloved. When our "mission" (that is, the churchy things we do) leads us to desolation and emptiness and vexation - time to hold the horses! If we grow in virtue by saying yes to what God calls us to do, why on Earth would we think we grow in virtue by saying yes to what God calls us to say NO to? Ask God: "What do YOU want me to say NO to so that I can say YES to YOU?" And be humble, obedient and faithful if God wants you to respect the fact you are not infinite and there are some good churchy things it is right and just to say no to. I'm mostly preaching to myself here, but maybe someone needs it...

POPE BENEDICT XVI: “Christ is not so much interested in how often in your lives you stumble and fall, as in how often you pick yourselves up again. He does not demand glittering achievements, but he wants his light to shine in you. He does not call you because you are good and perfect, but because he is good, and he wants to make you his friends. Yes, you are the light of the world because Jesus is your light. You are Christians - not because you do special and extraordinary things, but because Christ is in your life. You are holy because his grace is a work in you.”

I LOVE this! Thanks, Fr. Mike! More often than not, those of us who want to be “good Catholics “ forget all of this. We get soooo involved, adding more and more. Then, we are exhausted and trying hard not to be burned out. From now on, I will remember RIM (relationship, identity, mission) in that order.

I picked up the Bible in a year a little while ago and I would like to thank Father Mike for helping me back into my faith. It’s his enthusiasm and hyper energy level that really makes me enjoy listening to it every night. The readings in church sound like a reading of codes according to OSHA. I decided to buy a Bible off your site. Hope to read it soon.

Thank you Father Mike for this video. The annual March for life is tomorrow where i live and i have been feeling spiritually drained and exhausted of staying patient and loving towards others who resent the March for life movement. I know that this is a good thing that i am participating in but i just feel so drained talking about it to others and arguing a case that i believe is so simple to grasp. Please pray for me. Pray that God give me strength to continue fighting for the rights of the voiceless. please, i really need the strength and prayers right now. Peace and love to all of you reading this.

Thankyou father, I needed that, our Priest has two churches, and I alter serve both during the week, and in our church weekends. When we have a funeral they ask me to serve at both churches. I've been thinking about saying no to the one church. They have people who can do it. So I needed to hear it's ok to say no.

Our whole culture has gone nuts with the idea that "crazy busy" is the Pinnacle of virtue. My godson was crying on the phone. He's so tired and stressed out from having to go to one organized activity after another, and compete and Excel and be judged. He's having nightmares and stomach aches because he's afraid he will fail the preschool entrance exams. You read that right. Preschool entrance exams. Collectively, we need a sabbatical and reset.

Fr. Mike, thank you so much!!!! What a beautiful message!! When Covid hit, my life--along with the lives of so many others--was completely turned upside down! My mission had been cantoring and singing in the choir. I realize now, that it had become my identity--and while I was serving the Lord with it, it was becoming too much about me and less about Him. With that ripped away from me, I found myself in a very uncertain place with God. But thankfully, instead of turning away, I spent time building up my relationship to him. Long story short, I was figuring out "R.I.M." before I even knew what it was, lol. Thank you so much for encouraging us to do this. There is no better identity than that of being a child of God.

As always Fr. Mike, you are on point with your messages. I often find myself saying yes and getting overwhelmed, when I should be taking a step back and evaluating if that is something that I can and have time to do. My value is the time I spend with myself and the Heavenly Father, and not always with those who don’t appreciate my value.

Some parishes only value those who work - to the point that relationships are destroyed and people are driven away from volunteering rather than someone relinquishing any "job." Their Catholic value and identity is wrapped up in that "job."

I really needed to see this today. I’ve been struggling with a feeling that God is calling me to a vocation that would not provide nearly as much as I used to make if I’m really being called to become a public school teacher. I’m still discerning what vocation I’m being called to, but this video really helped me in this process of discernment. Thank you as always to the folks at Ascension Presents.

Such a good message. I think it's especially hard, living in a culture that constantly tells you that your value, your worth, is based upon what you can do. We even have performance evaluations that tell us whether or not we are worth employing. How does a person withdraw from the lies of the culture and truly take to heart that their identity is first a child of God? I don't think we hear this enough. When you don't know your own identity, you look for it in other places, draw it from other sources. I think this is a crisis in the Church right now.

Is exactly how I have been feeling here lately. I was doing a lot before covid, singing in one church choir, cantering at my church, working full-time, leading theology on tap at my church, praying the Rosary everyday, trying to do novena's and other prayers, assisting teaching Taekwondo class, playing in a band, and I had a major role in a local theater production.. then covid hit and all came to a screeching halt except for work. After a year I started entering at church again, playing in the band and doing taekwondo. All the rest I let go. I say the rosary everyday and sometimes it's a major struggle, but I do my best. Even scaled down, I am weary of it all! But they told me this would happen lol! Oh I really care about now is getting myself, my husband, my daughter and her , and my grandchildren to heaven. I will do what I can and leave the rest to God!

This was a good one. I know it's not giving me permission to not go, but at the same time, I gotta stop beating myself up about it. I'm not really thrilled with my local parish. Do I want to receive? Yes indeedy I do. I'll have to drive a ways to get there for a TLM, and not guaranteed a parking spot on the street. So in the mean time, I just close my door and pray for a good 2 hours in the morning. I love doing the Divine Office and my rosary. I recently picked up the book "Behold Thy Mother" which takes the rosary to a whole new level. Using this book makes me less likely to let my mind adrift and keep focused on the mystery at hand. I also read the daily Mass readings from The Magnificat monthly subscription booklet. And last but not least a truly...the word beautiful doesn't give it justice book called "Divine Intimacy" which follows the liturgical year with writings and prayers from the interior life of Carmelite nuns. Some of these prayers will truly bring tears to your eyes. But yes, 2 hours in the morning is my norm. And if things get a little heavy, I feel I can omitt or add if I feel I need more. I love having my prayer books. But always always always say my rosary every day no matter what.

Hi Father, Mike. Thank you for your Sunday mass videos. I was not raised in the Church, but praise God, found myself discovering the Catholic Church. I have a teenage son and another that is in his early twenties. My husband is a believer, but not very outwardly demonstrative with prayer. Since you are a young man, I do put on your Sunday mass services since I know they will pay more attention to your sermon than when they attend Church locally. They do have the Eucharist as well, but I want them to want to go to Church instead of me saying that we are going to Church. Boys are tough when it comes to opening their heart fully to the Lord. Please pray for Ryan and Steven. That sooner rather than later they will independently realize that God is ALL and nothing that exists in this world tops Him!😊 Thank you, Father Mike for all your service. You are a fine example of a Priest and keep doing a great job!

I would love to see more advice for divorced peoples and our place in the church. Also, how should we be viewing life in the church and what direction should we be taking to recover and serve God after this tragedy.

I have been there. I was in the choir, I worked in the giftshop, and I helped in other areas. You do get tired, it gets to be too much. Now I'm doing things in a new parish, that are less stressful. I'm discerning what other things I could add without stressing myself out. May God strengthen you and be with you as you work for the Newman Catholic Ministry. God Bless. Claire.

Thank you Father, I’ve been struggling with going to Adoration at 4am every Wednesday. Now I won’t feel guilty when I stop going after Easter.

We need to recharge regularly. When the apostles returned, Jesus called them away to rest. This is true for us as well. Like travelling to a beautiful place knowing that God is with you and just enjoy the beauty of creation. When we zoom out from our everyday routines, we can see the actual importance of things clearer that we cannot see when we push the pedal.
