With much respect for an awesome teacher of God's Word. You referenced Rev. 7:8 about the locus having the hair of a woman, it is obvious to me the church understood the difference between men's hair and women's, however in verse 7 it says they had the face of a man. I believe Nature provides a distinction between men and women in the fact that men grow facial hair naturally. They have to shave it off to make it smooth like a woman's face. I think Scripture speaks more about men having beards in a positive light, than is does about woman's hair. Blessing Brother. Mitch Spring

So unrelated but related to this topic. In the book of Mathew an issue was brought up to Jesus about some people were not washing their hands before they ate. And Jesus said what ever is brought into the stomach is eliminated, but what comes out of the mouth from the heart is what defiles a man. So don’t be caught up with appearances beards no beards long hair or short. Love one another like God loves us, reconcile forgive be fruitful. Just like God told us.

True, we need to love others as Christ loves us. We are commanded to Love God. Jesus said we have to obey His commandments to do that. If we encourage people to ignore or negate His Word and commands, that defiles us because we speak those words. To love is to respect. Our appearance matters. If it didn't, the Lord wouldn't have made the effort to distinguish male and female during creation.

1 corinthians 11:13 almost makes it a personal question as opposed to a command. Most just go straight to 11:14 in my opinion that takes it out of context. I personal never had a conviction about my hair length since I came back to Jesus. I will say he has been convicting me about hiw I need to forgive more as confirmed by a few dreams I have had. I can't say my dreads or length of hair has yet and I have studied 1 corinthians just to see if that would come up in my time with Jesus. Also at that time in corinth men where growing their hair to be feminine and short hair on a women was a sign of a specific life style of sexual promiscuity. Again 11:13 posses it as a personal question and if you read it in its entirety the whole book you can see where there are things that are commands and that comes of more as a suggestion at least that's how I have interpreted it.

As a believer in Christ, what should African women ( born again do their hair)?
@eze_soundzz2 жыл бұрын
Bro. Bernard is saying that women should grow their hair to its natural length, but an argument I’ve heard quite often is to keep the hair healthy, split ends should be cut and maintained. Would this not fall under taking care of our bodies as the temple, if women cut their hair ends for the overall health of the hair? From the distinction perspective, if cutting split ends is all that’s done to the hair, doesn’t that still provide ample distinction between a male and female? I would like to have an answer to this for when it is brought up with new converts, and even long time believers that are still trying to grasp Holiness.

If a woman trims her hair, its still considered long hair...Some women cut their hair because the weight gives them headaches. Even if subscribing to the UPCI biblical interpretation, how long is long enough? Down to her waist or knees, both is considered long... it's really not complicated when pride is not involved.
@jamessteenwyk4703 Жыл бұрын
@@revrufuswHello, personally I believe that "long" isn't fully dictated by length. But also by personal possiblity. Example: If you have two women, the first with hair to her waist, and the second with hair to her shoulders. It's easy for us as humans to say that the woman who's hair goes to her waist is longer. However, what if the woman with hair going to her waist cuts it? And she has the possibility to grow her hair to her knees. And the second woman with hair to her shoulders has never cut it? Her hair has reached %100 percent of it's possiblity where the other woman has longer hair but she is only at 60% of it's possible length. Now who's hair is longer? The woman who has stopped at 60% or the woman who has allowed it to grow to 100%.

1 Cor. 11 is not just talking about women having long hair as their covering, but also for them to have a head covering while praying and prophesying. It’s a tradition or practice by the early church, it’s not a commandment from God. However, many women feel convicted to observe this practice or just want to obey God’s holy word and honor His instructions on the order of creation/symbol of headship.

I am a teenage girl who is being raised in the UPC Church, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Cutting hair is one topic that I have always struggled with, I understand that women need to have long hair as a distinction and to show their femininity. I have also been taught that it is powerful if you don't cut it at all because of this verse- 1 Corinthians 11:6 "For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered." I know that our hair is our covering, not a piece of cloth. The definition of shorn is "trimmed, clipped, or shaved." So Paul was saying that if we even trim our hair, we may as well just shave it all off and not have a covering. He also said in verse 10, "For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels." With all of that being said, if I trim my split ends off will my hair really not be powerful anymore? My hair is curly and dry and so damaged at the ends, I just don't know what to do. If it means having damaged hair but following God even though I don't understand, I will do that. I just want an answer
@colintaylor79756 ай бұрын
It isn't that your hair is powerful when it is uncut. The power comes from your submission to the order of creation. Your uncut hair is outward symbol of your inward submission. The same way, Paul healed people with hankechiefs in the book of Acts. The power isn't in the hankerchief but in the name of Jesus. The hankerchief was the symbol of faith used in relation to the name of Jesus. Uncut hair is the symbol God has chosen to display submission to His order of creation.

Men with hair to their shoulders were considered to have short hair too. It’s in the modern era in these confusion times that people don’t understand the difference. It’s very clear. Let a woman and a man grow their hair and you’ll see that woman’s hair naturally grow down to the lower back. Where as for men it takes years to even get that close. Men in the ancient times had hair to their shoulder and it was not looked at as confusing or feminine. I believe all men should keep their beards if possible. If a persons hair length from behind would make a person question their gender or decieved them by it then it is wrong. @@Clicked_SnoopyFrI don’t see a Bible verse that says beautification is wrong. If we could make the face sexual through makeup, then the Bible would say for us to cover the face, same with hair. Apostolic Pentecostals have no problem with curling the hair and doing elaborate hairstyles. If a man thinks this is “sexy”, that’s opinion based, as the Bible does not say to cover the hair, just as it doesn’t say to cover the face. If a woman wanted to stop wearing these things thats fine, but that is a personal conviction it is not a command set in scripture for all christian women, neither is it even remotely stated in scripture that women can't enjoy these things, Isaccs wife Rebecca was given jewels to wear as a gift from Issac and his household (men of God). I agree with most of this about the long hair on women. Like 95%. I do not think a woman trimming one's hair, as long as it is kept noticeably long, is wrong in any way. I've heard people do all kinds of biblical gymnastics with the Greek claiming it must remain untrimmed, even saying that if you trim any of it that counts as short hair and something that should be repented of to the point it's a sin. To me that's ridiculous. Under the same understanding, if a man only trimmed his hair once a year, it could eventually grow down to his back side and still be counted short since he trimmed it. I think the main point he was making is right, that there must be a noticeable difference in length of male and female hair, but it ends there in my understanding. No offence to any who think differently. If you disagree with my understanding and believe God lead you never to trim your hair, you follow what you think God calls you to do. Just cast aside my thoughts. I love you reguardless.

Uncut hair allows women who cannot grow "Long" hair to still fall under this holiness teaching. My hair only grows to about my mid back. But other's grow to the back of their knees. Is my hair short? No. We both have uncut hair. Not about length. Its a principle of obedience.

Bro. Bernard, in listening to this discussion, I do understand the significance of distinguishing women from men. With that said, I have always been taught that we should not even trim our hair. If we have long hair that clearly identifies us a female & we trim the dead ends, keeping our hair mostly it's natural length, is that sin? I am truly curious to know on the trimming because my hair became so damaged from health related issues that I did have to have the ends trimmed in order to be able to brush it even. I am trying to see from the scripture absolutely no cutting or is it only keeping it long?

I don’t think God ever meant to make women miserable over hair length. I’ve seen a woman who’s hair grew so long, she had to carry it in a bag. If the hair is so long it gives a headache or so damaged it’s getting shorter, I don’t think women are in bondage to such things. The hair would definitely not feel like her glory in such circumstances.

No need to become religious or legalistic about it. Why would God be so concerned with the length of our hair as much as he is with the state of our soul? The letter kills but the Spirit brings life. Ask and pray the Holy Spirit to reveal to you what you should do.

Worth noting: Prostitutes from the temple of Diana had long, flowing hair to seduce men. The Jews reacted and prohibited their women from exposing their hair. That's why even modern-day Jewish women often wear wigs. Paul contradicted their religious obsession and stated women's (own) hair is a crown and covering. This is about freedom, not creating another religious obsession. I mean, God created African females who don't have long, flowing hair. Are they exempt from becoming Christians? Surely sis it is the blood of Christ that grants us entry into Heaven. Please trim your hair. If it was that important, Jesus Himself would have said something about it. Instead, He argued with the religious leaders a lot.

That scripture's purpose is not to cause bondage but to see the spiritual reason behind the distinction in hair between male & female in creation. A woman's hair is symbolic of the spiritual covering her husband, Pastor, Jesus, etc. has over her life. The encouragement in that scripture is to not remove the covering whether it be hair or the Lord or the man. This is why Paul speaks of the shame it is to a woman to have her hair shorn (different from trimmed, or reasonably shortened) bald or in a cut pertaining to a man.

If it's a sin then why posse it as a question as opposed to saying keep you hair short as a man and grow your hair long as a women? In 1st century corinth men where growing their hair to be more feminine and short hair on a women was a sign of a sexual promiscuous life style so I believe paul gave suggestions to the church there so as not be identified with people deliberately living a rebellious life.

Long hair does not mean uncut in the Greek or Hebrew. Long hair in the Greek and Hebrew means long. Shorn and shaven also have the same meaning in the Greek and in Hebrew. Paul knew Greek and chose his words right. If he wanted to say uncut he could have but he didn’t.

Some of it is eg: keeping it at its natural hair length. The bible does want male and female to have distictions he created us that way. However he didnt say anything about not cutting hair he says long hair, the words long hair and natural length has different definitions they are not the same. A christian has christian liberty to cut her hair thats a personal boundary and choice her choice no one elses. Long hair can be at many lengths eg: shoulder length, on the shoulder blades, just above the waist, waist length or longer. By all means cut your hair if you want, its your choice, and God doesn't say you can't. What he wants is for there to be a distinction between male and female and for you to be feminine by having long hair.

@8784-l3b Жыл бұрын
Pasted in for you: Jesus was a Nazarene, but He was not a Nazirite. The two terms are often confused for one another. The term Nazarene refers to someone who lived in the town of Nazareth, while a Nazirite (or Nazarite) was someone (such as Samson or John the Baptist) who took a special vow before God and was subsequently consecrated to God for service. Numbers 6 details the requirements for being a Nazirite, which included abstaining from wine (verses 3-4), keeping one’s hair unshaved (verse 5), and staying away from dead bodies (verses 6-7). After the time of the vow was fulfilled, the Nazirite had to present sacrifices and cut his hair, offering this as a sacrifice as well. From this information, it is clear that Jesus was not a Nazirite. Jesus could not have been a Nazirite since He did drink wine, as recorded in the gospels.

What about African women, who cannot grow hair long? There are many women whose hair breaks off and remains short, how do you judge them? That may be why Paul used covering mostly. I agree with your teaching however, there are those precious among us that long hair is not possible therefore, we should make them included within the scripture as Paul wisely made attempt to do.

A woman who does not cut her hair has no control over how long it grows. She only has control over whether she cuts it. That is what God sees. That is what God honors. The choice that a woman makes in her walk with Him. So if it does not grow long and people judge her that will be on them. God will still honor her obedience.

Bro. @David K. Bernard, I hope and pray that the UNCUT HAIR doctrine will be revisited and studied deeper according to God's Word and Spirit. The Bible is clear, it does not say UNCUT HAIR, but only "IF a woman has LONG HAIR", and it is not even a command but a conditional "IF", nor was it taught by other apostles or Jesus, Himself. There are no 2 to 3 supporting verses for the doctrine of UNCUT HAIR for women for it to be established. Unlike the doctrine of One God and Salvation which are of grave importance in the eyes of God, the Bible has so many supporting verses for such, but Uncut Hair doctrine has none.
@z-man73123 жыл бұрын
If you look at the Greek, it’s literally saying that, if a woman lets her hair grow long, it’s a glory. At that point, it comes down to the attitude of the individual. If the attitude is “can I still trim it, get away with it, and it still be considered to be ‘growing long?’”, then the attitude is clearly not “how close can I get to following the Word of God?” If the desire is to be as close to the Word of God as possible, then the reaction to “letting the hair grow long” would be “I won’t do a single thing to take away from that length.” The corollary is this: If the long hair is a glory, the attitude of someone wanting to please God would want that glory and relationship with Him, and they would do as much as possible to meet that. Regarding the “if” that is mentioned, that is linking to the same type of choice as mentioned above. In the verses leading up to this in I Cor. 11, Paul makes the case “if” a woman is going to have her head uncovered, she might as well just shave it. At the time, women would serve as prostitutes in pagan temples and were identified by their shaved heads. So, basically, Paul is saying that a woman who is not wanting her hair to grow long might as well shave it and be identified as a prostitute at a pagan temple. Furthermore, he also states in this chapter that man is the head of the woman, and she dishonereth her “head” if it’s uncovered; hence, the “shaved head” reference. Jesus said we can’t serve 2 masters, so if we love what we want to be able to do, we will hate the things of God (going off Matt. 6). That’s the point I believe Paul is making. “If” you don’t want to let it grow long and don’t want the glory of God, your “treasure” is here in the things of this world.

70-80% of the world's population is in compliance with nature's lesson on hair echoed by the apostle Paul in ICor. 11 (This is not a uniquely Pentecostal thing, however its practice in the extreme is.). Dr. Bernard's interpretation of v.16 sounds a little conveniently sketchy (8:18). Rather, this sounds more like Paul is stopping short of creating a church hair doctrine (custom), having emphasized God's nature as the instructor. Also, Dr. Bernard mentions a universality of agreement among churches and cultures on this subject; however, there is no mention of this subject in any other epistle. This was not the only specific issue that the wild and exotic carnal church at Corinth that Paul addressed.

How would you respond to the comment that Jesus is portrayed with long hair?
@patriciahein82338 ай бұрын
The principle I adhere to is : My appearance should never be such as to make me look anything but what I am female. As to the term nature in the scriptures, if left to nature in the most used sense of the word (biological) , hair will become long on a male or female, so the scripture cannot refer to nature in the biological sense. What other meanings for the word are there? A characteristic by which something is recognized, natural. Long hair on women was considered the culturally natural thing. Long hair was recognized in that Roman culture as natural for woman, but men of that day and region often had longer hair than what we would like for a man in the church. I think the brother rightly points out that the key is making a distinction between male and female. It is also true that long hair has become an identifier of a number of groups, not just apostolics. My objection is only that it is argued that cutting hair or letting it grow is a sin. The nature of the culture (or what is considered natural or normal in that culture ) determines what is male or female). That is why kilts (essentially a skirt) in Celtic countries is perfectly appropriate for a man, but not so in the US. But it is also true that just because something is considered natural or normal in a culture doesn’t necessarily mean we should do it. Each individual male or female must prayerfully work these things out in their own life. I want to be seen as a godly female.

@z-man73123 жыл бұрын
This isn’t necessarily the scriptural aspect of it, but I think the world (including ads for beard products, beard competitions, etc.) makes it clear that a beard has to do with nothing more than masculine pride. And, while women are being attacked from the world on the front of modesty of apparel, men are certainly attacked on the front of pride. Furthermore, even by the world’s standard, there have been surveys that have come out that indicate that people are much more likely to trust someone who is clean-shaven, as opposed to someone with any facial hair. So, one would infer, if we are to be witnesses for Jesus and His gospel, we’d want to be seen as trustworthy and free of personal pride, whether or not we feel that perception is fair. Obviously, in I Cor. 11, a man shouldn’t have his head covered. I would think, for a man, that would include covering up any additional part of your head (e.g. ears, neck, forehead…and face). It’s all in the attitude. It’s either “can I get away with a beard” or “how close can I get to what the Word of God is saying.”

Please point to the two or three other verses that clearly confirm the long hair doctrine. Also I always wondered what in the world Paul was talking about when he said doth not even nature teach . I wondered because in nature men and women would naturally have long hair, not just women. He has to be talking about the nature of the culture in which they lived, not biology. In that culture prostitutes wore very short hair. God nor his angels would be pleased if a Christian woman were mistaken for a prostitute. Such would not be the case today. However, a woman should not easily be mistaken for a man. Many churches, including Black Apostolic churches teach that a woman must also wear a veil on the head when going to church. Then I read the following: Verse 15 has been made to say that a woman should not cut her hair. The verse actually says nothing of the sort. It simply says that if a woman should be wearing her hair long, this is a glory to her. The Cotton Patch Version of Paul's Epistles reads: "for a woman long hair is attractive," and J. B. Phillips translates that long hair is "of glorious beauty to a woman." While the scriptures do here extol the virtues of long hair on a woman, nothing is said of short hair. It is not said that it is a sin, not even a shame, although from the passage one could hardly conclude that there is anything glorious about it.
