Any rational person should be able to see that the Bible, especially Genesis, is on the same level as Greek, Roman, Norse, and even Messapotamian mythology. The stories are so mythological.

It almost makes sense if you're someone who believes Satan has free will and is capable of redemption. Since he's a more powerful and magnificent creation than any individual human being, God is softballing him in hopes that he'll eventually come back. Basically, if Satan is God's favorite kid then letting him get away with all his crap and not doing anything about it makes a certain amount of sense. Not much, mind you, but a certain amount.

He definitely does, most of the creations on this planet are born just to suffer. Animals, insects, fish, plants. WHY are their existences so agonising? Why do most animals eat each other alive? Why did god create humanity in a way that most humans suffered in this life and will burn in hell because they weren't born in the middle east? Why did he create sadists? Why were we created with an inclination towards sin? All so god could watch us suffer, then save a few of us and tell the ones he saved that he is great and merciful?

when a parent punishes, it should never be to deliver justice but to get the child to understand consequences, so as much as possible the punishment should relate to whatever it is they did. Break things for fun...take a toy away for awhile...pitch a screaming fit, we stay home becaue no one wants to be around that. And never, ever punish or decide on a punishment until you are calm so that you don't act in anger or frustration. But hey, what do I know? I'm just an imperfect human.

I remember talking to a co-worker who was supposedly studying theology from an online course. He started proselytizing at the workplace, but instead of saying he shouldn't do that I challenged him. When I told him how his "all good" god loves to see a lot of death and destruction through war, he amazingly enough tried to show how good God was by pointing to more wars! 🤦 Every time I told him, "well, that means all God isnt all good." he would bring up another war. Even my other co-workers, who were believers, understood my point, but just shook their head about how bad of a job the supposed student of theology was doing. At least they admitted they didn't really have an answer, and knew war wasn't a good thing. Does studying Christianity really twist logic to the point of absurdity? Going by that experience I would say, "yes". At that point I realized, more than I did before, that Christians really don't see non-Christians as humans first, rather as the other. God is "all loving" only to the ones that love him back.

That last point is really spot on! An important thing to keep in mind is that, for most believers, the stories are simply text on a page, and the human mind naturally defaults to "a million is a statistic"...It may help, esp when going over biblical stories, to paint the picture: Those Philistines? Those were villages and towns of PEOPLE, just like you, going about their daily lives, following their careers, getting married, raising their children, sharing hobbies with friends after work...until one day, a Horde of raiders came over the hill, killing without mercy, burning down everything, even killing the animals that are normally taken for wealth, for no reason or motive other than the relentless cry of "Milk and Honey!!" Really putting people in their shoes helps give a different perspective...

The thing about Christians, however, is that they feel they have a "justified reason" because for their beliefs in something they can't even show exist. Which I think is even more dangerous. Stealing resources is bad enough, but at least there's something there we can possibly come to some sort of agreement on. But beliefs can be made up and and justify along the way, especially from a vague source and that can lead a person to do almost anything. Even in more recent times with supposedly more advanced religiously moral people, September 11th and January 6th still happened. One can make the argument for the wars that are happening now. It's obvious Russia is trying to gather resources and stroke egos, but an even bigger atrocity is happening over in Gaza, which is even more deadlier and seems more belief driven. There are enough resources go around I think especially when we put our mind to it, but when we start believing we're more worthy of them than others that's when problems arise. Being idealistic I know, but aren't those ideals are main goal?

No religious person has the inside track to the mind of a god, yet many of them want to impose their beliefs thinking they have, when it's really just their ego. When it's to the point of them taking rights away, that's when we need to stand up for ourselves or we'll lose everything we've gained. They already took away a woman's right to choose, and some of them are already on track justifying slavery in the Bible. Hate to use a slippery slope argument, but there is evidence of religion being harmful in that way. What else they'll justify using their religion? "Might equals right" is already dangerous enough, especially when they think they have an all-powerful god blessing them. Still, I don't mind people believing what they want to believe as long as it doesn't hurt anybody else and they keep it to themselves. I think if more people thought that way we would be much better off.

Okay this is so interesting. I actually never heard that story. I went to Google it and the website says God was justified in killing Uzzah because God had commanded no one could touch the ark. Bart Erhman points out that The Apocalypse of Peter almost made it into the Bible instead of Revelation, which got in instead for political reasons, but one of the deciding factors is that, after being taken on a guided tour of Hell, Peter is so moved by all the suffering that he prays to Jesus, begging him to forgive everyone...And Jesus, being essentially the God of Mercy, pretty much has no choice but to relent, and redeem them all, letting everyone out of Hell and into Heaven! The early church HATED this, as they needed to hold onto the terror of eternal punishment to maintain social order...I sometimes wonder how all of world history and religion might have been different, if the Bible actually had a truly merciful and Happy Ending like that to cap it off...

The city of Tyre put up such an enormous struggle against Alexander the Great that after he broke through the defenses, his army slaughtered half the population and sold the other half into slavery. I think I finally figured it out. The bible has always been some guy's revenge porn fanfiction written in the perspective of the writer being god. That would explain why Yahweh always sounds like an extremely abusive husband. And then other people started adding to the fanfiction, kind of like the SCP Foundation which is why the writing is all over the place. And then people who aren't in on the joke took the fanfic WAAAY too seriously. As a former believer this question hits me all the time. "Did god even consider my prayers or did he prefer to hear me begging and mueling for them like a mad man?" I will occasionally ask myself. I remember the thing said that we should pray without ceasing and not give up like the gentile woman who kept bugging the king till he finally gave in to her request just so she’d stop bugging him. YET, we are supposed to be good stewards of our time, be redeeming the time, do dozens of other possible commands, all at the same time. It basically opens the door to relativism, because you have to pick and choose, and you can’t worry about if you’re doing this process right choosing the right things to do, because that also would be sin, and we’re also commanded to go according to our conscience. Sorry if this is oversharing but this vdeo resonated with me. I was raised in the quite moderate Church of England (Yep, I'm British). I remember church every Sunday, Sunday school, prayers before meals and bed and prayers during my CoE school assemblies. My mother was and still is a believer and my grandmother was even moreso. Two things were the catalyst for me losing faith. School bullying from age 5 - 16 in said Christian school (both by the teachers (usually humiliating in front of class and yelling at me) and the other students (name-calling, being beaten up, having my things smashed and on one occasion being urinated on)) and later in secondary school (to a lesser extent by the students). My grandmothers death, she had lung cancer, I remember the last 2 or so years of her life were agony, she barely ate, barely got out of bed. Towards the end of her life my mother stayed by her bedside almost constantly, in a sick twist of irony she passed away during the few times my mother was away. She still blames herself for not being with her at the end. I remember during both of these times praying and praying to that things would get better. That the bullies would leave me alone (later turning to "please make the bullies sick today" then "please make their school bus crash"), that my grandmother would get better or at least die painlessly. None of those prayers were answered. I was about 16, when I first said the words "I don't believe in God." I remember telling my parents scolding me and guilt tripping me and threatening me taking away Christmas (probably one reason I hate Christmas now) and "warning" me I would go to hell. While I don't believe that God exists from a rational standpoint, I also hold the belief that it doesn't matter even if He does, because He is not worthy of recognition, let alone praise and worship. He is nothing but a disgusting piece of s#!t j3rk!ng off to humanity's suffering regardless of their beliefs.

I attended a christian church for the first 29 years of my life, was especially devout during the latter 18 years of that period, and then de-converted in 1982. One of the things I am most angry about was that the verses in the Bible describing god doing the bad things were never the basis of a Sunday school lesson or sermon, and were almost never assigned for us to even read. On the rare occasions in which they were used, it was only in passing and in conjunction with a broader range of verses about an overarching story that was the subject of the lesson so that the bad stuff could not be avoided, but it was glossed over. And I don't remember any verse that describes the horrendous and sadistic mindset of god ever being assigned or read in church. I don't understand how the Sunday School teachers and preachers could repeatedly claim the Bible is the perfect word of god, and, yet, in unison, conspire to guide us around and away from those verses, which constitute about 80% of the Bible. When christians do talk about god doing the bad things, they pass it off with the explanation that he "had to do it", or he "had to let it happen"; as if it is beyond the power of this omniscient being to do anything about it. John 3:16, the most quoted Bible verse among christians, is reflective of this.

My father let me read the bible when I was 10. Then encouraged me to join bible studies. (All denominations) I observed that they skip the horrible passages and repeat the good ones. That's how they deceive people. Had I not read the whole bible I would have believed them. I thought my father wanted me to be a christian. He only wanted me to find the answers myself.

One of the first things that truly disgusted me about the Bible was when Pharaoh was ready to let Moses and the Israelites go and God hardened his heart in order to show off more hideous punishments he inflicted on the Egyptians. God took away Pharaoh's free will in order to keep punishing all those people ruled by the Pharaoh. He killed their firstborn children for the supposed sins of a ruler.

Truly, a father worthy of our praise, our love, and our devotion. If you think this analogy unfair, let me assure you: It IS unfair. Every act taken by this fictional father is a TAMER version of the equivalent action from God. He did not destroy her, he did not hurt her or her friends, he didn't even have to kill the family pet to forgive her transgression. This despicable human being is simply a nicer version of the God of the Bible, with power over far fewer people. But wait, what crime did the daughter commit? What rule did she break? Take your pick. Make it the most egregious crime you could possibly imagine. Maybe SHE killed the family pet. Does anything you can put in that slot, anything at ALL, make this the morally correct response? Is this ever, under any circumstances, the BEST possible way for her dad to behave? Don't even pretend you believe the answer is yes. If you wouldn't grant it for a flawed human, what could possibly possess you to grant it to a flawless God? When you describe the righteousness and judgement of God on those who disobey or disbelieve or even hate him, this is what you're saying. You're saying that not only is this extreme behavior justified, it would be _wrong_ of God to do anything LESS than this. Whether you realize it or not, admit it or not, no twisting or contorting the text of scripture will let you escape this fundamental truth. This IS what your holy book says. The Word of God, written for all to see.

Any human could be expected to react really poorly to it, even forgiven for responding in such a way. Because we understand their emotions got the better of them, and they acted in anger and quite possibly confusion. But saying that that's the most morally good response possible is a whole 'nother thing entirely, and THAT is what they're saying when they excuse God's behavior in all these horrific verses. It just seems like people do everything in their power to give God every advantage and every excuse. They'll rob God of his omniscience just long enough to say he couldn't have seen it coming. They'll rob his omnipotence by saying he couldn't have interfered to prevent it, or fixed the damage after the fact with less than a blink of his eye. They'll rob his benevolence long enough to say that it's perfectly fine to get angry when someone does something wrong, forgetting that there's a HUGE difference between chastising and torturing, and never even understanding in the first place that karma is not the goal of punishment. I'll never understand those who think inflicting pain or suffering on those who've done wrong is a _solution_ to the problem. That everything is fine and dandy as long as bad people get hurt as much as or more than they hurt others. Frankly disgusting...

I went to Church today and the preachers were talking about the plan of God. It seems like they are really convinced that they can have both things. Have free will and God's plan being perfect. Another great video Brandon. I love that you are approaching these topics at such a different angle. So many videos I watch are more technical about how the Bible isn’t true because or history or archeology. Even the ones who go after the morality of god do it in a tried and true manner but your angle always seems fresh and a new way of looking at these problems no one else is really poking at. There’s plenty of videos of god created suffering or evil but I don’t see too much about how god delights in that suffering. Nice job pointing these things out.

A few days ago I "asked" for a verse to make sure I'm not on the wrong path by throwing away 35 years of religion. Ezekiel 5:2 was my "answer". I read it and was like whoa how grotesque. To be fair I read verse 1 and realized it was only about hair which, weird, wtf!? Then I read the whole chapter and the hair thing is parodied later to god's "chosen" people. Right after that bit about parents eating children and children eating parents. I was reading this before I started watching this video. Great job as always.

Your videos are well informed and well rounded. Would you consider doing a series on the theology of The Good Place and how it relates to the biblical stories? That show did a phenomenal job of showing YWHW as either the bad guy or at least incompetent. It just gets better with each season.

Eyy, you fixed the f stop issue. And you changed the camera framing so that the painting isn't trailing out of frame. Looking good. Now just move the 'camera left' side of the desk forward a bit so its edge is aligned with the bottom frame of the camera view instead of the side wall that we can't see anyway (or double down on the angle and move the camera even further to the left). Then everything will be perfect.

Totally random comment, but for the last three or so years, I've been using KZbin premium. I decided to stop using it for one day to save money. I am now back on KZbin premium because I got tired of seeing religious ads. Especially when watching videos on atheist channels, like yours.

@Elsimioborracho I don't have any financial interest in it, but I installed uBlock Origin in my browser and it stops all the YT adverts cold. A month or so ago, they found a way around it, but would have a popup saying that they are aware of an ad blocker, and either pay up or turn it off. Well, I didn't, just waited and then that stopped. It is a free add-on. As of right now, a little indicator shows it has blocked over 1,000 ads in just under two hours on here.
