I’ve loved and appreciated Michael Pearl’s book about child rearing, but I was disappointed with his slightly sarcastic way of dismissing women who choose headcovering. It is not common in my country for Christian women any more, but there are some. And many of them are very gentle spirited women. I do not see any correlation between headcovering and women being cantankerous. We need to remember headcovering for Christian women in western countries was the norm until early 20th century, especially after World War I, when women not only stopped wearing some form of headcovering, but even cut their hair short (into the Coco Chanel inspired bobs) and started wearing more revealing clothing and trousers. However, women still wore hats to church right through to the second wave of feminism in the 1960s. Since then, it is rare. Having studied feminism at university, I can definitely see a correlation between the cessation of headcovering and other changes to what Christian women wear (and other changes, such as ordaining women) rising after that second wave of feminism. So if some women feel convicted to wear some type of headcovering in their endeavour to sincerely follow God, I don’t think that should be mocked or dismissed. If it is their conviction to do so, I think we ought to respect that the Holy Spirit has led them to do so.

Sharyn and A Homemaker's Journey (I didn't watch this video but am very familiar with this matter.) I post on head covering a lot. The 'covering' is the hair itself. I have my thoughts using the Old and New Testament, and there is also a post/essay by 'FA' that looks at Corinthians only. All this can only make sense if the hair is the covering. Reply if desired.

Thanks for the thoughts. Be careful calling yourself a Bible believer while rebuking people, specifically women, who read 1 Cor 11 and cover their heads when the pray. It's a straight forward reading and flows with the text. History shows it has been a long practice and only very recently have the (2nd wave feminists especially) sought to disrupt it. Why? Because it shows make headship. Hard truths, inconvenient too. But it's in the Bible

The issue at Corinth was not whether long or short hair was an acceptable covering, but whether or not the head was covered with a veil or hat. This is proven by the following: ----"Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head" (v. 4). The distinction here is obviously not between short and long-haired brethren, but rather between men with covered and uncovered heads. ---- Contentious sisters were provided with an alter native: either cover the head or be shorn or shaven ( v. 6). But if long hair were the intended covering, then the Apostle's alternative is meaningless. "Cover" ( -ed, -ing) in the A.V. disguises the fact that different words for "to cover" are used in the Greek text. The distinction between two of these, "katakalupto" and "peribolaion" proves that a veil or head covering, and not long hair is intended. These words are as follows: --- "Katakalupto" ( 'kata' = 'fully'; 'kalupto' = 'to cover up'), "to cover fully" ( Yg). This word occurs through out verses 5- 13 and is translated "veil" in the R.S.V.; Nestle and Marshall's "Interlinear Greek-English New Testament'' and many other versions. These translations make it plain that the issue relates to a head covering, not the growth of hair, long or short. -----"Peribolaion" ('peri' = 'around'; 'ballo' = 'to throw, cast'), "something cast around" ( Y g). The long hair of a woman is her glory - like a mantle cast around ( v. 15) .(8) But this is not to be displayed in the assembly of believers before the presence of God. The intended covering in the church meeting is the "katakalupto" ---- the head covering or veil.

Hold up you all... have you read from the beggining?I Corinthians 11:3-6 it says 'Now I want you to realise that the head of every man is Christ and the head of every woman is man,and the head of Christ is God.Everyman who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonours his head. And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonours her head -it is just as though her head were shaved.6.If a woman does not cover her head she should have her hair cut off and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off she should cover her head.' Verse 14 explains how nature, that is ,women having long hair which covers their heads and men having long hair is a disgrace this means women it dies nit mean that hair covers a woman's head no the hair is representing man his can you go to God's presence with your head representing man?.Women HAVE TO COVER THEIR HEADS WHEN PROPHESYING OR PRAYING ...and there is no in between you either FOLLOW God's word or you don't you OBEY or you don't ..and I am sorry if I have upset anybody but God's word can NEVER be changed it will remain as it is till Jesus comes back

Yes let’s just use something man made to put over our heads to make sure the perfect creator GOD himself can hear the persons he made in the image of himself. My family ( who abused me and tortured me) growing up wore head coverings even in their sleep incase that prayed in their sleep or had a dream. It’s the dumbest idea ever. If you want to know what Gods word says. Read it for yourself with an open mind. If you feel like he’s telling you to cover your head…. What do you think your long hair is for!?!? You think our creator will not hear you without a cloth over your head?

The Greek for "covering" is "peribolaion" which yes, means veil or mantle, so a woman is given her HAIR for a veil or mantle. The clearest verse in this passage is, "her hair is given her for a covering". Clear passages trump cloudy ones.

Wrong there are two different Greek words used in the passage Paul is appealing to nature in that verse. First of all why do men take their hat off at church and when praying and not their hair?

@Carol70887 Hi Carol :) When I studied this a few months ago and was convicted, I wrote up all my reasons why I wanted to cover and presented them to my hubby. I prayed and told God I would submit and be content in his decision, it was hard on me at first...and still is at times...when my hubby said he'd prefer if I didn't cover. However, as my head I submit to his wishes. Esphesians 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. --As unto the Lord.

The Pharisees were legalistic. What made them legalistic was that they enforced the law for their own profit, their own power. They weren't following the law for god, but for man. A woman covering her head and encouraging others to do the same is not legalistic if her intentions were selfless and for God alone. But if she were doing it out of pride for herself, then that would certainly make her legalistic.

Hes not going to be thinking much about if you pray at home, in your backyard, in your car, or at the local church..... AND he certainly isin't going to make much of an issue about a man or woman wearing a hat during prayer, and wearing the RIGHT hat at that:):):) We go to heaven for much more interesting and important traits.......not for silly things like wearing the 'right' head piece....

Thats just what Jesus told me personally a woman's long hair is her covering. . If you are thinking about the verse about the angels ..women are naked when bathing how are, they to keep their head covered when they are bathing when the angels are keeping watch over them.. If anyone thinks they need a cloth to cover the head.. It can't be on the head all the time... But that is what hair is for..

In the Greek they seem to use different words, but they both mean a veil or mantle. Maybe it’s stating "If a woman has SHORT hair, then let her also be shorn. But if it’s a shame to be shorn then let her have long hair as a covering"?

@Carol70887 Carol, I am not going to change my mind on this and go against what my husband says :) I told him before he read my reasons for why I wanted to cover that whatever he decides I will submit and I will not bring it up again. I intend to stick to that promise and obey my husband :) I believe God does exceedingly above all that we ask or think, and that someday (hopefully soon!) I will be able to cover with the permission and blessing of my husband. The head covering will be a symbol...

(...) Think of Sarah ,once Abraham told her to say she was her sister and she did it. Abraham was wrong but God intervened and convinced HIMSELF Abraham that he should'nt have done that. GOD is man's head NOT woman. God wants to deal with MAN personaly. If a woman prays God to convince her husband that he's wrong ,He will do it. NOTHING can change the order God established once for all between Himself , man and woman. God deals with man and He wants the man to deal with the woman.

God isn't saying that men are "better" than women. He's saying that there's a certain order to authority. Women follow men who follow Christ who follows God. It's just the way it is. It's not sexist, it's orderly.

@Carol70887 I read the subject you discussed with Emily . NEVER does the Bible tell any woman to leave or separate from her husband. God placed man above the woman . You seem to defend the Bible and that's great so you must know this : " God is the head of Christ ,Christ is the head of man and man is the head of woman " A woman must submit to her husband in everything and EVEN if he does not obey God's word ( 1 Peter 3). (...)

A woman's covering is her Father, then she leaves her Father and marries her husband, then he becomes her covering, if she doesn't have a Father or Husband , her brother can be her covering.. She's not respecting her Father, Husband, Brother, she's respecting God, because Man is the head of the woman and God is the head of Man.

The head covering for the woman is a man, ( husband or pastor) not a piece of material. Read the actual whole chapter and you will see that is what is being said. (The man, head of the family, covers the woman for God's order and spiritual protection. The woman is not to cover-ursurp authority- the man's headship. The hair was only mentioned as an analogy. Notice the phrase" for that is even all one as if she were shaven" is used to start off the hair analogy, but what it is comparing is that both go against nature-God's natural order.) 1 Corinthians 11:3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. 5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. 6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. 7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. 8 For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man. 9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. 10 For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord. 12 For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God. 13 Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? 14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? 15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

St. Paul talks about two different coverings: “6For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. " Verse 6 wouldn't make sense if the covering in those verses meant hair. It would read: "If the woman does not have hair, let her also be shorn." You can’t be shorn if you don't have hair to shave in the first place.

@Carol70887 Your behaviour should be a testimony . For ex ,if you spend your time in church everytime he's at home ,he's going to be furious about your God. And he 'll be right. You musn't desert him under "holy" pretext nor give up your home duties .God never asks this. I read such testimonies ,one about a woman who spent all her free time at church and gave up her husband at home. When she stopped this to please her husband and care for him ,God answered her prayer for his salvation.

@Carol70887 You say '"and if he do not want to follow me" But he doesn't have to follow YOU ! I have a question for you : do you submit to your husband in everything as God requires ? Why then should your husband be jealous ? It's curious but what I told you about a potential husband's jealousy is precisely your case. Do you really live according to 1 Peter 3 ? Remember ,Christ is NOT your head . Christ is the head of MAN. Your head is your husband. .

@Carol70887 I would NEVER leave him because I would sin and leaving would harm him and some men who don't know God (yet) may be jealous of a wife who follows more God than them. That's absolutely not what God wants. God is not here to harm males or take their place ,he is here to SAVE them and empower them . Husbands expect their wives to listen to them. So do fathers with their children.

Do you think you are better than, or on the same level as Him?
