Does Your Hair Rigged Bread really rise up in the water. You may be surprised at how often it doesn't.
I carried out some experiments in a tank of water to see just how punched bread responds when mounted on a hair rig. The results confirmed my suspicions and I think a lot of people are getting it wrong.

Great video. Here is another way that I use. cut out a square (about 3cm x 3cm). Roll one corner over itself and put a large pellet band over it. Even though the bread where the pellet is is compressed, the rest of the bread will remain boyant and pop up. Caught many a carp this way.

Great explanation of the art of hair rigging bread. The options are simple if you want it popped up like in winter use individual discs, if you want bottom fish or dob squeeze the required number of discs. Well done Den. The same idea applies to fishing bread flake squeezed to hook. The more you squeeze the faster it sinks. Nice one. Cheers

Hi Den thanks very much for the video, was very informative. It actually made me realise that this works the opposite in that when float fishing bread punch its probably better to multiple punch a few so they actually sink. On a separate note way before the days of popups we used to add a polystyrene ball to baits to make them sit up, very old school but it always worked. 🎣

Great video this! Very informative. I use thick sliced bread for 90% of my carp fishing. Bread does come off the hook very easily, especially if not squeezed. A bite has to be dealt with quickly or bait gone. I use a bread punch made from 3/4 inch copper plumbiing pipe. Perfect size for me. Works well on the surface or on the bottom.

Thanks Spark. I have used short sections of broken poles to do the same thing. Once I have punched the bread, I blow it out of the end to stop compression.

This is why we compress and steam or microwave slices when roach fishing,shame you didn't demonstrate breadflake as that's only compressed around the shank so technically it will float say on a river and we wonder why we can't get bites!! Well done Den. 13* here in the uk! Thrushes arriving in the South outside my window, noisily trying to stake it's claim! Happy New year Den 👍

Great video Den I've press mine out the wrong way too and will do them individually now but another way of getting them to float is I punch polyurethane discs as well or cut a small piece of foam and add to the bread Discs But this has been very helpful 👍

Hi Den, amazing demo, how on earth did you know the bait was not popping up? I have been fishing for over 60 years and using popups often. I have tested commercial popups in the margin but never thought to test bread punch. Thank you, I might hook a few more nice carp this year.. happy new year to you and the bride Den, thank you for the great video.
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen Жыл бұрын
It occurred to me that I shouldn't just trust everything I heard Mike, so I did the tests and as I thought, the bread didn't always rise. I think there is definitely something to be said for using a piece of buoyant bait as the last piece of the popup. We can't get commercial Popups down here, so I often use a drilled (Chum type) puppy mixer. The ones I have are the same diameter as the 10mm bread discs and around 3mm thick.

I never compress my bread, unless i'm fishing deep venues and i want a very slow fall using a 1 meter+ hook length. To stop compression, i always keep the plunger at full length inside, so it doesn't even touch the plunger until i push each single and separate disc out and i always use 3 discs, and i use a float stop on the line so i can adjust the depth of the bread. Very good experiment Den.

Nice tank test Den , i use old carbon pole sections to punch the discs out and just blow them out with my mouth . The discs take on flavours and colours well too . You can also punch out soft foam packaging discs that can replace the top one of the stack , it's guaranteed to pop up then .
@FishingwithDen

@@topfuelteddy No worries mate. I did try mini marshmallows, but they go sticky and horrible in the heat down here, so my only answer so far is the drilled puppy sized dog biscuits. It's not perfect, but it does work.😁👍

Nicely shown, Den. Personally when I want to pop something up I’ll put a bit of foam or floating plastic corn on the hair along with bread, sweetcorn, or tiger nuts. Is foam allowed in your competitions?
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen Жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian. I often use a puppy sized dog biscuit as the last disc to increase buoyancy. I'm pretty sure foam would not be allowed over here, but I never use it it so I really don't know.

I like to cut the crusts off a slice of bread leaving a thin strip of the white attached. The 10 mil crust on 1st then 2 disks of the white as you say punched out individually. The crust helps it stay up. Nice vid Den 👍 Will you be showing your latest competition ?

Den, Not directly related but are there other species in Australia besides Carp?
@turtleman190
@turtleman190 Жыл бұрын
There is hundreds if not thousands of other fish species in Australia. Common ones in the area where dan fishes are. Australian bass/estuary perch , yellow fined bream, bull headed and yellow eyed mullet, Australian long finned eel, Australian glass fish, tandanus catfish/eel tailed cat fish. A couple types or herring . There is plenty of other fish but they are small or rarely caught.

I wouldn't put foam on the hook. If the fish ate it, it wouldn't be able to digest it.

Interesting point Michael. I don't fish at depths greater than about 18ft and it seems to work at that. I also often attach a small puppy size dog biscuit as the last piece on the hair to increase the buoyancy.

@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen Жыл бұрын
Hi Colin We do have some Perch, Roach and a few Tench over here, but they are hundreds of miles away from where I live. Other than that, I can catch local species like Mullet, Catfish, Bass and Brim, (Sea Bream). Of course, what that means is that I end up fishing almost exclusively for Carp. Having said that, I would love to catch species like Chub and Barbel again, but unless I return to the UK, that’s not going to happen.

Have you tried just putting your punched bread on the hook, or even more uncivilised and just torn a bit of bread?!?!😲 Might be a vid in comparing the hookup rate. I find you can put unsquashed bread on any way if you give em about 2secs to mush it up👍
@FishingwithDen
@FishingwithDen Жыл бұрын
You can put the punched bread on the hook Brett, but on a small hook, like a size 14 or smaller, it's not the easiest way to do it. You also need to take into account the expansion of the bread after it has been on the hook for a while. That's why we use a hair rig for this style of fishing.
