Fun facts that weren’t covered: There are lots of cool details to find, such as trying to talk to your friend’s parents, or seeing more things in the kitchen and bathroom corrupt. The author/gamedev is actually very prolific in the TWINE community (the VN engine the game runs on). I’d highly reccomend reading his Authors notes for some valuable insights. Finally, I would recommend playing with a Female Best Friend over a Male one, as there are extra details that better inform the ending and the Author’s intent

The sequel to this game that needs to be made: The Dad Who Works at Nintendo. Plot: For some reason, people at the Grump office keep leaving. When our protagonist, Dan, asks what's going on, Arin just responds with a shrugged shoulder and tells him that they just keep coming to him and quitting on the spot. Arin quickly changes the subject, though, when he suddenly seems to remember this really cool, limited edition old Gameboy he bought recently....

So it becomes a parable for addiction in the end. Up to the last ending, I wasn't sure what role his parents play. It seemed strange that they were victims in one scenario, and seemingly hostile in another. But it's because they're not agents, they're just affected allies. The uncle isn't "coming" for the kid. The kid is giving in to his loneliness, and giving up his relationships in a trade for comfort. The uncle is the manifestation of all the bad consequences of that choice, coming to haunt him and forcing him to give up his relationships in exchange for uninhibited coping mechanisms.
@kvjackal7980 Жыл бұрын
You basically got everything except for one little detail: it's not about addiction, it's about having a friend who is a habitual liar. Hence the title.
@Finkster5 Жыл бұрын
I like when horror (or any fantastical genre really) doesn't have to be a metaphor or an analogy. Why can't something magical and unexplainable just be what it literally is? I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with a parable but then if you see everything through that lens, all fiction becomes incredibly boring and limited imo. Everything is just something mundane from our own life in disguise, nothing goes beyond that. The addiction idea is interesting, but it's also compelling to imagine some sort of supernatural entity that preys on the emotional vulnerability of others and can distort reality to avoid detection.
@JazzyLogical Жыл бұрын
@Finkster5 I think what's cool about this game is it can be both! The medium of it being a game and the way that it's presented in a choose-your-own-adventure style naturally lends itself to multiple interpretations, like literal and analogous. Just depends on what you're looking to get out of it-- scary existential horror or parable-like moral lesson
@kvjackal7980 Жыл бұрын
@@Finkster5 Ordinarily, I'd fully agree with you. I hate it when people try to make a moral out of every damn thing. It's just that in this singular instance, the creator(s) of the game _very_ transparently intended for it to be perceived as one, specific idea. If you don't like their vision and want to imagine it as something else, hey, more power to ya; it is a game after all. (If you don't believe me, look on the game's "the author's notes" page and read the section titled "On Lying to Your Friends.")
@TheHadMatters Жыл бұрын
@@Finkster5I don't see everything through that lense. I absolutely agree with you in principle. It was just impossible not to see a hidden meaning, because the function, or identity, of his parents was so strange, and begged for an explanation.
