You do an excellent job in your presentation and video production. Your voice is well modulated, your introduction is great, the body of your comments is well outlined. Your know when and how to start and to finish. There is no rambling. All of which makes your farm activities even more interesting and informative. Out of all of the videos I watch, it is my opinion, that yours is at the top of the list for the foregoing reasons. Others doing what you do could learn from your video presentation. I enjoy agriculture and animals. Thus, I enjoy your "Farmer Tyler Ranch" presentation. Keep up the good work. You are a credit to farmers and stock-men, especially those in a relatively small operation.

Wow, I don’t think FTR is getting enough credit for his “gamble”, which wasn’t nearly just a simple gamble. He pretty clearly evaluated his entire situation with feed, weather, forecasts, capacity, etc... leading up to his decision to do this. It wasn’t anywhere close to just “luck”, which is what separates successful farmers from bankrupt “herd mentality” farmers. Sure, you can’t predict prices and the market, but IMO that was the biggest risk, but it is ALWAYS a risk. FTR pretty much just “Money Balled” his way to a more profitable year thru wise decision making. Big congrats to him for not only succeeding, but for establishing a very sound, improved approach to his operation, versus simply loading the calves up on a predetermined calendar date and relying solely on luck. A job very well done by farming standards.

20k congrats!! Like this video! Nothing more fun then math! Yes need to do your own math to see what your markets on hay and cattle are doing. Talking to some of the farmers that are moving to the soil Health side with more intensive grazing and grazing management. One thing they are seeing is that after some time of getting their system figured out they are able to Market animals a hundred pounds heavier in the same time frame while lowering their feed cost. That's money in the pocket!

Your politicians are lying to you. Ireland beef will be supplying a lot of Europe's depleting grocery stores because US beef import to Europe is being cut back right at the moment. Hold off a little longer and your calves will be worth more to fill the demand soon when the SOB's are forced to pony up the cash. They created an artificial shortage here that hurt really bad for 3 weeks but the market doesn't lie and prices are headed back up.

Farmer Tyler...not all life follows the best plan's. ..I have always thought it was the best to get more than you need just in case plan's do not go well....it is an old motto, be prepared. ...if it goes well then great, if not you where prepared. ...just in our case we cut back on the cattle, to make sure the end of the year..it was manageable. ..on our 350 acre, farm, we grew, corn, oats, and of course hay...the corn and oats became silage, for winter feed, along with hay...we did not need to buy for anything. .we also had, chickens, geese, ducks and rabbits..and our horse's. ..we seemed to pull through just find with left overs..come summer...we also kept our steers a little longer ..then off to the Sale barn..it is trying to maintain a certain number of cattle ...to big of a herd can cripple you same with not enough..but there is just that right number when you can relax and know in your heart you have made the right choice...good luck to you and your farm...

That's one way to try and add income to the farm. I myself run around 70 cow/calf pairs, but with everything going on, I'm having to hold on to my left over calves, hoping they gain weight and have the markets recover enough to sell at a profit. What I'd like to see more of, are ways to value add on a cow ranch that isn't typical. If anyone could post some ideas they would like to consider or try, please do.

would you consider taking the biggest calves to market early, and pasturing the smaller ones? Because it sounds like the open space made the biggest calves lose a little weight? We raise our own hay for cattle feed but if we had to buy hay, it wouldn't be worth it. Not for us anyhow. It all comes down to weight, with more pounds of beef equaling more payout. Running 100% Black Angus as we do helps as they always are worth more per pound at the auction.

What if you played both ends of the idea. Take about 1/2 of the calves in at the normal time and keep 1/2 back. Hay cost will be lower. You could take the largest calves in during the first group and give the smaller ones time to put on a bit more weight.

I think you should figure how much you could have sold the extra hay for, instead of figuring how much you had in it. It is called an "opportunity cost " . Also I assume that your calves would have brought more per pound at a lighter weight, at least they do here in Indiana, so that is not really an accurate comparison.

For every 50 lbs of calf over 500 you lose $0.05/lb on total weight. A 600 lb steer brings $0.10/lb less than a 500 lb steer. You get in real trouble real quick by putting too much weight on calves on the front end. Sell light or sell fat, selling in the middle takes you to the poor house. Advice from an old cattleman.
