Have a 2017. The dealers have not been helpful at all and treat me like I'm the first person with the problem. I'm an ASE certified mechanic so know my way around an engine. I will never buy another Honda again because of the way the dealers and Honda corporation have treated us. Things happen when new technology is used but there's no excuse for treating customers poorly.

Do you have any thoughts as to the cause? I think it's bad rings and Honda has decided it's cheaper to deal with people after than proactively fix. It's also possible the problem isn't bad enough to actually make a difference to the life expectancy of the engine.

Unfortunately it just can’t compete with today’s modern turbo 4cyl despite it being bullet proof and easy to work on. You can still get the K24 motor while you can in some cars like the Acura ILX and TLX but even the modern ones are direct injected

@@NinjaPickups because most new car buyer's are a bunch of idiots that don't understand the important factors of owning a car such as long term reliability and easy maintenance. They only care about what the gas mileage is, how much horsepower it has and maybe the crash test ratings if they have a family. They don't care how easy a car is to fix and how long it'll last because the dealer will take care of it under warranty until they dump it. That's why I'm never giving up my 2000 Acura TL even with nearly 300k because it's such an easy care to diagnose and repair with parts being cheap and plentiful because it shares platforms with the Accord.

I've got an '18 CRV with the 1.5T. So far, I've got 39k on the clock. I wasn't aware of oil/fuel issue until a few months ago when I stumbled onto the subject in the CRV forums. Anyway, I switched to Amsoil at the first oil change. Just for fun and to monitor engine wear on this 1.5, I decided to use Blackstone Labs for oil analysis. My last sample was sent in with 6049 miles on the oil and 31,629 miles on the clock. Here's an excerpt from the Comments section of the lab results: JOHN: We're seeing good progress with this sample. Its lower metal levels are partially due to this being a shorter interval (at least so far), but there's also plenty of improvement on a per-mile basis, perhaps due to lingering wear-in washing out. Regardless, these are healthy numbers, so your engine is maturing well and without any major issues on the horizon. Silicon is fine at 41 ppm, but it may come down more in the future once the oil is changed. There's still fuel showing up, but 1.5% isn't a harmful or problematic amount. The 3.0 TBN shows plenty of additive left. Nice! I'm no engineer by any means, but I guess the 1.5% number quoted above suggests that there isn't an issue. I just sent off my latest oil sample to Blackstone, as I'm now at just under 38000 miles on the engine and the oil sample had 5941miles on it. I started with Amsoil Signature Series 0W20, but have decided to switch to Amsoil XL 0W-20 just to see the difference, if any, with lab results. Also, I switched to ethanol free gasoline after last oil change, which has increased my combined mpg from 28.6 avg to a consistent 34.2 avg. Lastly, I just stepped outside to sniff the oil dipstick. If it's got gas mixed in it, I can't tell, as that Amsoil has a pretty healthy scent to it. Sorry for the long rant, but I love this kind of stuff.

The new 2019 2020 Rav4 generation looks nice what with all the new modern cabin features. And the hybrid is supposed to get something like 40 combined mpg. But they do supposedly have an issue in some with the baffle design in the fuel tank making it hard to fill past 10 gallons of the 14.5 gallon tank. The previous generation still looks good but has far less in the way of modern tech in the cabin. I mean a lack of rear climate vents in upscale trim levels in 2016, 17, 18 is pretty unacceptable That said, you're right the CRVs were a lot nicer than the outgoing Rav4 generation.....if only the powertrain was worth a damn
@henryhonda8408
@henryhonda8408 5 жыл бұрын
That problem wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. Even if you can only get 10 gallons in the tank.... @40 mpg that will get you 400 miles on that partial fill-up which is more than most vehicles with a full tank.
@ram89572
@ram89572 5 жыл бұрын
@@henryhonda8408 Oh yeah. And my understanding is that it isn't a problem with every fuel pump out there. Just some of them seem to cause the problem and you can work past it to fill all the way if you pull the nozzle out just a bit and fill slowly so the fuel has time to work it's way down past the bottleneck without backing up. If I was in the market for a new vehicle then the new generation Rav4 Hybrid would be quite high on my list. Sadly the vehicle currently on my shopping list is a compact cargo van to convert to right hand drive for running mail. Still debating which one of the 3 I want
@henryhonda8408

I agree...... just pull the nozzle a bit, I do that all the time to top off the tank. Some manufacturers say not to do this..... I had a 2009 Santa Fe & the manual said in bold letters to not overfill the tank as it could cause some engine damage. All the civics I've owned in the past & my present Insight hybrid don't say that in the manual so I do it. The Rav4 hybrid is definitely very high on my watch list as is the Rav4 Adventure (Trail in Canada).

We have even had a few close to or over 100k miles that were uber or Lyft cars still going strong. Dilution or not I have yet to see any engine damage. A more common failure in these engines is oil starvation to the cylinder head due to a clogged oil passage through the head gasket...almost always caused by a small piece of plastic wrap from an oil filter.

I had a 2017 1.5L turbo CRV in Alberta Canada. Drive it 30 mile commutes in winter. So engine had lots of time to heat up. It still had serious oil dilution issues. Also the cab would not heat up in winter. Engine took all the heat. Froze my butt off last winter. Was my third CRV. Traded it in and bought a 2019 Mazda CX-5. Had it for 10 months. @fiveowaf454
@fiveowaf454 5 жыл бұрын
What I cannot understand is the time it's taking these engines to warm up as that seems key to the issue of the oil dilution. Most modern vehicles warm up very quickly, manufacturers worked out decades ago that by reducing the volume of coolant in the actual engine, they would heat up quicker and fuel mileage would increase. So what is the issue with the CRV, even an old Isuzu Rodeo we have will warm up from a 25 degree start within a few miles. Did Honda put a lot of coolant capacity in the engine block and head because a turbo charged engine can produce so much heat when using lots of boost? It seems the whole problem is caused by some fundamental design fault in that 1.5 engine and will never be solved until there is some major redesign.
@troyjollimore4100
@troyjollimore4100 5 жыл бұрын
@@fiveowaf454 Nothing of the sort, AFAIK. Your Rodeo would have held around 11L of coolant. The CR-V? I can't find the actual spec, but I can't see it being over 9L. It's a much smaller engine. You don't 'hold' the heat in the coolant, you cycle it through the radiator (intercooler) as quickly as possible. It's more a result of ignition timing and fuel. The computer runs the engine rich at startup to ensure easier running, as well as getting fuel to 'burn up' in the catalytic converter to heat it up faster. But rich mixtures run cooler. Leaning it out heats the block (and coolant) up faster. It's a balancing act.
@fiveowaf454
@fiveowaf454 5 жыл бұрын
@@troyjollimore4100 You are confusing overall coolant capacity of the system, with the volume within the actual motor and controlled by a closed thermostat at startup, until the engine warms up sufficiently. As to he rest of your comment about "cycling it through the radiator etc". as a Mechanical Engineer who has been working on vehicles for over 45 years, I have no idea what point you are making, relative to the point at hand.

Folks are mixing up the reason why Toyota added port injection to their GDI engine. Port injection helps keep the intake valve cleaner of carbon deposits, an issue that is associated with GDI engines. Having some port injection will help reduce oil dilution. I have a 2017 CR-V in Tennessee and have some oil dilution so I change my oil at 4000 miles and use Mobile 1 full synthetic. I get GREAT gas mileage, 35 mpg and so far, no issues at 40,000 miles.

It happens in every single engine ever made, not just direct injected ones. It's the reason oil needs to be changed, rather than just changing filters. The problem here is the quantity. VW/Audi TSI engines are also high offenders. Ford Ecoboost seem to be the only turbo charged direct injection engines that don't have a greater problem with dilution than their N/A port injected counterparts (they have other issues to be fair, but not this one).

Couple that with the fact Honda uses 0w20 in their engines and there's a dilution problem - it's easy to see why folks are getting upset.

Relatively-high compression combined with low-tension piston rings seems almost a guarantee of fuel leaking down into the crankcase. This technology - along with tiny, turbocharged engines - which benefits the consumer with better fuel economy and higher power, seems mostly, though, intended to help manufacturers meet increasingly strict fuel economy standards, regardless of maintenance/repair issues down the road (which will likely be described as "normal," "they all do that," or "it's within factory specs, there's nothing we can do," to the owner).

i think too because they use turbocharging and direct injection on the 2 liter and it doesn't seem to have this problem so clearly the problem is not turbo related or GDI related like every supposedly mechanics are trying to tell us. My 2011 ecoboost is turbocharged and direct injected, never had any oil issue and it has 155 000km. It's just a badly engineered engine and they don't know how to fix it without opening the damn thing because it would be too expensive.

the fact that it takes forever to heat up now clearly explain that rings doesn't seal properly or the engine would not heat up fast enough to make them seal properly on high idle cold start so they went the Lean way to try to prevent fuel to get in the oil.

I traded my Subaru for a Honda b/c I’ve always loved Hondas. And I wanted a CR-V.But when I found out the engine of the 2017 was turbocharged I decided to lease instead. A turbo on a SUV was a red flag for me. Later when I heard about the oil dilution problems a test I pulled out the dip sticks and smelled it to see if the rumors were true. The strong smell of gasoline almost made me throw up. Engine longevity issues can show up beyond the 6 year so-called extended warranty. And then the owner is stuck with a major repair. I am glad that I only leased this thing. Honda,the largest manufacturer of engines in the world should know better.

It seems to me as well that the excess fuel will wear the bores over time allowing more fuel in to the sump. The reality is many vehicles are not going to show signs of excessive wear until after the warranty has expired. You were right to lease IMO, because anyone buying the CRV thinking they'll keep it and run it for 150k miles or so is likely to have a disappointment in addition to the fact that if problems become common, the resale is going to take a big hit.
@fiveowaf454

@Trigger Troll Agreed unless you can get enough extra gas in to keep the level up. Manufacturers fitting these low tension piston rings to reduce friction have me worried about the performance down the road with some miles on them compared to the reliability level we had reached where without some other design issue, engines were doing 200k with proper maintenance. I feel longevity and reliability are being sacrificed on the alter of environmental issues with out due regard to the benefits to the environment of things lasting a long time. In addition I can see these engines burning oil and causing far worse pollution combined with the need to be replaced than the mpg improvement achieved by this new technology.

Totally agree. Oil dilution started on my 18 CRV around the 9K mile mark (after the alleged Honda "fix"... I'm hearing "change your oil more frequently" but I get gas fumes in the cabin in less than 1K miles after an oil change now. There is something seriously wrong with this engine design and changing your oil more often isn't the solution. Honda needs to do something more than giving a modest warranty extension.
@fiveowaf454
@fiveowaf454 5 жыл бұрын
@@markp6586 Interstingly from information I saw elsewhere, the extended warranty only covers the cylinder head of the motor, so it sounds like if the surplus gas damages the bores, main bearings, crankshaft etc. then you are on your own. If that is true, the guy read it from his extended warranty letter from Honda, then really they are giving you little to nothing. Perhaps OD might damage the camshaft bearings, but it seems the bottom end of the engine is just as vulnerable if not more so. It really irritates me that people like yourself can have such issues, while Honda plays the "they all do that"/"it's quite normal" game.

When I take it to the dealership I explained it to them when I went for my oil change and they told me that they didn't smell any gas "lie" and when they tested it there wasn't any gas in the oil "lie" So I asked them how come after my last oil change my oil level was exactly at the full line and now it's registering about 20% more full than before and all I got was deer in headlights glare with no explanation so I will be sending off my own sample to have tested cause they are full of shit! Dealerships are not going to admit it. In fact, if you ask them if there are others with the problem, they will say no. They know there is no fix, so they sell BS just like Honda does. If you take for example my radio screen keeps beeping and going black off and on as you drive down the street. There are many others that have the same problem and its posted all over the internet. I called Honda last week. I asked her if others are having this problem. She said "No, mine was the first one she has heard about". I asked her if it was her first day on the job. Told her she was full of shit because it is all over the internet and Honda is telling the dealerships that there is nothing they are going to do until the manufacturer of the display comes up with a solution. Honda was replacing the radio heads, but now they have issued a bulletin telling the dealerships to do that. You think after a problem of 3 years, you really think anyone is working on a solution?

I was about to pull the trigger on a 2018 CRV with the 1.5 turbo. I had watched several videos on KZbin reviewing the CRV including one by Redline Reviews. It was after watching that video That decided on the CRV with the 1.5 turbo. Then I started reading about oil dilution problems that people were complaining about on Honda forums. That was enough to change my mind. I tried a Rav4 out but didn't care for it and ended buying a 2017 off lease Toyota Camry with a naturally aspirated V6. Not being able to buy the CRV was very disappointing but the Camry is awesome and I feel as though I dogged a bullet. In closing, apparently Honda is in the process of creating their own oil to fix the problem of the oil getting past the piston rings. I wish the folks with these CRV'S luck with the hope that this will solve the issue.

Honda used to produce an extremely reliable 4cyl engine. In the early 90s Accords had distributor bearings failing, and Honda was still paying for new distributor sub assemblies free at 140,000 miles. Reliability and customer satisfaction was top rate. I had always owned Honda 4cyl cars until last year when I went to splurge on my first new car in 40 years. The only CRV that did not have a turbo was their bear boned with no safety features we required. So I now find myself without a Honda for the first time in 40 years. I think Honda made a mistake leaving their non Turbo 4cyl engines. Won’t tell you what we bought, but it came down to the Toyota RAV4 and the Subaru Forester.

@@DriversOnly As a "former" non franchised VW TDI only sales, service and full repair entity named Wild Rose Motors, Ltd. out of Southern CA, the only real issue with diesel fuel dilution we discovered was when owner's were using higher percentages of bio diesel and such was mostly an issue with the common rail TDIs from 2009 to 2015 which were the engines that fell under the emission's cheating scandal. Engines slated for 10K oil change intervals that do not have oil dilution issues should not be subject to early oil change intervals due to the fact the anti wear additives need the extended heat/pressure cycles to effectively protect metal surfaces via molecular adhesion process because when new oil is added, the very strong detergent additives flush out these anti wear additives which now need approx. 2K - 3K miles of heat and pressure cycles to get back to max wear protection which results in approx. 7K to 8K of this max protection out of the 10K interval. If one changes oil early say, 3K to 4K, the max wear protection never reaches it's intended effectiveness.. Bottom line here is the possibility that this oil dilution issue which, IMO, is serious, these 1.5L turbo engines are subject to premature wear from both the fuel dilution as well as the early oil change practices resulting in possible much earlier engine wear compared to engines w/o oil dilution issues that adhere to the full 10K oil change intervals. Here's hoping most understand what I am presenting here.

I have a 2019 Civic Hatch and the oil dilution is not terrible, but it is there sometimes. Half of the time I do smell some gas in the oil when I open the oil cap or check the dip stick, other times it just smells like oil. I can't remember if it's worse in the winter time than the summer time. One way I could see this be almost completely eliminated, is getting the block heater installed. Once it's installed, you could plug your car in for around 20 - 30 minutes (as you are getting ready to start your day) to preheat the engine, then unplug it when you're about the start the car, and head out after idling the engine for about 30 seconds. I hear that the oil dilution commonly happens on the warm up cycle, so the block heater might be a good solution to reduce it down. I also found blasting the AC causes the engine coolant to warm up faster compared to without it. But I only do that when I am getting in my car after it's been parked outside for around 7 hours in the sun. Doing that early in the morning is not exactly ideal...

Here's the real description of the issue: when it comes to fuel combustion, GDI engines share some similar characteristics with diesel engines. One of those is that at low load or idle conditions in cold outside temperatures, the engine is not burning enough fuel to maintain adequate operating temperature and, because of that, will not fully combust fuel. That unburned fuel will either go out the exhaust or get pushed past the rings into the crankcase. In diesels, this is called "wet stacking" because enough unburned fuel will actually make the exhaust pipe ("stack") wet with unburned fuel. The main way that diesel engines can combat wet stacking to increase the engine RPM at idle to increase fuel consumption enough to maintain engine operating temperature. That will likely be the way that GDI engines will have to be managed to solve their wet stacking problem. To be clear, oil dilution is a direct result of wet stacking. So, any regimen that does not cure wet-stacking won't cure oil dilution. Wet stacking was seldom an issue in multi-port-injection (MPI) gasoline engines because those engines have to burn more fuel to maintain idle and will, thus, maintain operating temperature in all but the very coldest of environments.

Great to see someone actually knows what they're talking about. So basically it's the owner's/driver's driving usage. If they very-cold start the CRV, then drive 5 minutes and stop/park it at the grocery store, while it's still cold, then shop, then come back to a very-cold start again, and drive 5 minutes to get back home, and they also don't regularly change their oil every 3,000 miles, and they beat the crap out of it, while it's still cold, and low miles on the engine, then there's oil dilution. This is common knowledge with people like you and I... however the public is not educated in this bad owner/driver behavior.

2018 Honda Accord sport (1.5 6 speed) problems here. Multiple check engine lights (misfires) and eventually the engine stalled out. Honda replaced the entire fuel management system and cylinder head on my Accord under warranty since they weren't sure what the exact issue was. I'm only at 25K miles!! I do live in NY, but I do 90% highway driving. Not sure how long I'll keep this car. I love it and get incredible fuel economy, but I wont replace a fuel system or cylinder head on my own dime.

Had my 2019 CR-V at 846 miles break down due to the oil dilution problem causing no acceleration when pushing the gas pedal down, brought it in and the dealer did an oil change which was a temp fix, but now at 1190 miles in and about 2 months after the first oil change i'm having problems again. Bring it back for another check up this monday which will probably be just another oil change.

I'm waiting on the hybrid CRV. I assume based on this information, this motor should not have excessive oil dilution since it's not a turbo gdi?

They do have an earth dreams engine they fixed the problem on 2013-2017 accords. Not sure about the new 1.5t though. I have a 2014 accord with the 2.4 earth dreams and i never had the oil smell of gasoline. I make my own maintenence on my car and i live in a cold climate. I mostly just burn off the oil than having dillute gasoline.

I found another issue in 10 gen civics. The corner of rear tail lights is to close to the body and by vibration it destroys the paint specially at summer.
