It depends on the places you visit. Big cities in India do have these problems, but smaller cities like Pune,Indore,Mysore, Mangalore, Trivandrum, to name just a few, don't.

It's 23 December today in Mumbai and we see foggy weather in early morning and after sunset. It's not pollution which is causing it. It's very short may be max. 1-2 week long, good dry weather of the year in Mumbai. It's due to mixing of Cold winds from the North with hotter winds from South. It's Temperature Inversion phenomenon. The same thing happens up north in Delhi after mid November when Cold winds from north mixes with hotter winds from south. It happens ONLY this time of the year whether Mumbai or Delhi.

Why don't many travel to India? Quite frankly due to the constant negative portrayals of the country by the western media. You can only guage what India is really about, if you spend many weeks travelling the length and breadth of the entire nation. From tropical beaches, to rainforests, to deserts to the highest mountains on earth! Hundreds of languages (many of which are classical with thousands of years of literary traditions behind them), thousands of dialects, people who come looking like almost every ethnic group on earth, advanced classical music, massive diversity of delicious and sophisticated food, incredible ancient monuments, artwork, temples, beautiful clothing, great diversity of wildlife, modern developments that has so far made it the 5th largest economy on earth etc. For sure the negative aspects are also there, but it is very unfair to only focus on that.

Human overpopulation is the root cause of the tragedy in India. Not to mention a host of other socioeconomic problems we face today. In 1947, the population of India was close to 320 million. India has added another 800+ million since then. And somehow, magically, its citizens expect a supply system that periodically adjusts to a large population's demand for goods and services. China is the only country on the same scale and has done better at achieving order/governance. But, then again, they have earned it by brute force. Not to mention all the industrial activity has resulted in large-scale environmental damage - water/air/soil for which we will pay sooner or later. In comparison, the population of the U.S in 2024 is close to 349 million. The total land area is about 3.5 times that is of India, and an economy that is many times bigger. Picture India in 2021 if it were around 500/550 million people.

The first thing that hits most people on their visit to India is the total disregard for traffic laws, incessant honking and filth and garbage thrown everywhere. I have always been sick of street food, but now, Indians as a whole are becoming sick of the street food and the government not enforcing regulations. Personally, I consume street food at just a few places where I know they maintain really good hygiene. It is just a bad PR for the country as a whole. These people only concentrate on very few places and give reviews. Most of them can't even afford expensive hotels, and when they see much better things. Top Gear went to the USA and showed their worst areas, and they were later rejected for their visas. London is the worst place other than the main areas; you can get mobbed or killed at any time. USA, you can get shot any time. Health is much cheaper and more accessible compared to many countries. This can't be shown in developed countries. If common citizen knows treatment and medicine can be given cheaper they will go against the government.
