Using older mobiles for APRS is challenging, but as you say, fun. There is real need for hams to fill in the map with APRS base station digipeaters and iGates

Digirig Mobiles are my go-to sound card and PTT control boxen for APRS. Denis's support is outstanding and his products are top-notch, and a lot cheaper than, say, a SignaLink. I buy Digirig shielded and choked cables too. Other than figuring out how to properly configure Direwolf setting up a Retevis RT95 digipeater was almost plug-and-play because the little box and the cables Just Worked.

I have to figure out a good test - I'm guessing in an area where there is no APRS traffic "forever" is a good answer, but we need more APRS usage and its still too difficult to grok for most people.

I noticed after you hit Initialize (7:31) your baud rate went back to 115200. I assume that is the baud rate the digirig is configured to work at. Is it 38400 or 115200? Also your Rig number and Device file changed. Could you clarify the setting you used to make the Digirig to work? I have a Yaesu FT2800M that I am considering doing exactly what you have done here with Digipi and all those parts. Thanks again for the APRS content.
@temporarilyoffline3 ай бұрын
Hey Brian, sorry about the confusion there. Those are for cat control settings and this radio doesn't support cat control. I could have been more clear about it, but I forgot since it doesn't apply. The APRS is sent as audio and the digirig injects the PTT for you.

Did the 3ah Bioenno cost more than the radio? The same Pi gets the same address every time in the shack so I use IP address, not digipi.local, which is problematic. Since the FT90 does not have CAT control, a Digirig Lite would be a little cheaper.
@temporarilyoffline3 ай бұрын
The bioenno was a gift from another ham, but yeah, they are pretty much the price I paid for the radio. Both are examples of being at the right place at the right time and realizing it (aka luck) Yeah, its a DNS problem more than a digipi problem on "digipi.local", IP is more reliable to use, but not as friendly as the name. Yeah, digirig lite would be a great idea - there is a cabling mess in my future that I'm not happy about.
