We have spent another £1400 on the engine carbon clean and new injectors. So even though on the previous dyno run the car only managed a maximum of 351 bhp we are expecting a decent bhp gain, even though the v8 engine has covered over 150,000 miles in it 13 year life.
But the question is with how much horsepower will we be happy?

The bhp gain was more than likely to be from the new injectors rather than the carbon clean, though the carbon clean would of helped a little.

do a full MRC Stage 2, with intake manifold flap delete and airbox flap delete, ram air foam filter, full exhaust and decat and get the proper 450hp these are capable of!

That's a very tidy gain in power. The timing issue is almost most definitely stretched chains and worn tensioners after 150k worth of milage. Before you even think of supercharging you'll need to refresh the chains tensioners and guides - you'll be running the risk of putting a rather large hole in a piston from detonation if you push the engine at anything other than its prescribed timing specs. Yes the costs are mounting up - but you'll have a properly sorted car at the end of it - whether you decide to supercharge or not. If you've got the budget I'd do the chains tensioners etc and supercharge it at the same time to create a monster. 👍👍

While I certainly agree that the engine timing circuit is faulty, “timing pull” is completely unrelated. Timing pull refers to your motor delaying the spark event. The ecu decides to do this when it detects knock (through knock sensors, little microphones). Knock is the combustion mixture reigniting, which is dangerous and will eventually destroy an engine if left. The ecu retards timing as damage control: trying to manage the effects of preignition.

I use to have a silver RS4, at about 27000 miles I had engine management light come on, Audi (as it was still under warranty) performed this procedure on the engine, it was night and day driving after, I'm surprised you didn't feel the extra horses.

The engine can make more than 390 the engine in the rs4 is the same audi just took the engine out of the r8 then just de tuned the engine on purpose the engine can make 450 no problem with out blowing up as they keep saying

@@rogerlivsey634 but also what I said is that the engine can make more power because its technically out of a r8 the biggest thing they would need to do is intake exhaust and compression ratio as its pulled out for reliability timing yes can take them a bit further but also they would need cams to be put in for extra lift but not to much as it can make the valved hit the pistons if its wrong

Look into getting a Dragy too guys, you can time 100-200kph runs and it gives you a great indication of whether any mods are increasing performance. Saves you going to the dyno all the time!!

I’ve heard about carbon build up causing these engines huge power issues, just goes to show what a decent clean does. Apparently revving the engine out from 2nd-4th keeps the carbon build up down, the engine struggles if you drive it like a granny constantly.. lol

Not true. Higher rpm does not get rid of carbon deposits on these engines. You have the blowby gasses going into the intake which contain oil vapour and that just deposits on the intake valves, no matter how hard you drive it. Only thing that helps a little is meth injection.

I would perform a compression check and inspect spark plugs. Engine is most likely not making the same compression is made when new.

New injectors, carbon clean and decent (not supermarket) fuel will give you more economy and performance. It's true in every car but probably quite pronounced in the V8. Good work!

As others have mentioned it might be worth getting the timing chain's checked for stretch, or maybe guide or tensioner wear, great vid as always guys, Ben is there finger nail marks on that passenger side inside door handle ? lol

there will more than likely be wear to the chain and guides, my thoughts are the actual sprockets on the crank and camshafts will have worn teeth , therefore even a new chain wouldn't really help it, wants a full rebuild really at that mileage, but might aswell redline it and send them pushrods to heaven LOL

I’ve got a b7 S4 in the US and everyone parts out the RS4 when they need timing chains serviced because the job is going to be worth more than the car. Here in the US the parts are $ 7,000 and labor brings it up over $10,000 for the chains. It’s crazy but I’m curious what you guys pay.

@@dwdrum11 Correct, the chains & guides on the RS4 will never break, but one on 150k engine depending on how its been serviced and used could stretch or the tensioners could wear. Its only the back of the guides that's metal, the bit the chain runs along is still some sort of plastic/nylon material.

@@stevenroach4955 Would it be possible to install a chain and tensioner from the newer 2019 engines? I've done the same on a 2010 VW 2.0L TSI engine. Tensioner and chain are used in new 1.8L TSI engines. No more risk of chain stretch.

I carbon cleaned my B7 RS4 and mapped it to stage 2 at the same time. Ended up with 426 on the dyno - up from 372. So your figures look about the same in terms of gains.

Yeah I dont agree. They are doing health checks and at the same time checking the numbers. They can see now even with the stock tune and a carbon clean the car is still pulling timing. There is some further issues they need to fix which this helped them realise.

It’s a really nice motor if you want to tune it especially with a bolt on turbo and 1bar of boost and you can keep revs around 7500 It can make easily over 600whp with stock internals and you can enjoy the car so much ;).

The knocking YES DO GET THAT SORTED PLEASE.... my A4 diesel B7 had a knocking from the suspension anyhow it went on for a while, then part of the (front) suspension snaped as I dropped a week down off a curb. Hopefully you'll not have that drama again thank you for the vids.

You will find the new injectors are the biggest contributors to the increase. It is torque that gives you that chest feeling not BHP. That is why turbo cars feel quicker over normally aspirated engines. Even the V8s. If you supercharge it, that feeling will be there.

Exactly this! The torque of a turbo gives the big acceleration in a small powerband lower down the revs but the bhp of a big v8 keeps the car accelerating at the top end and higher speeds when a turbo will be out of puff.
