Slightly older video but will comment anyway. I have ridden all 3 pedals. The DS1 are ok as flat and great as any clipless. The DS2 where just trash as flats same as the DS1 clipless side. Crank Bros changed the composite "spikes" to be more square and pyramid shaped compared to the cone spikes on the DS1. Now the DS3 are my favorite. The metal grub screws on the flats (and clipless side) grip into all my shoes very well. Other than a smaller area, I feel the DS3's work nearly as well on the flat as the small size Stamp flat pedals. Again, clipless side is the same other than a bit more grab from the screws. Screws on the clipless side make it a bit more difficult to unclip if you cleat is deeper into the sole of your shoe. I found I pulled most of the screws out of the clipless side since they are not needed for the most part.

Very helpful! I was looking at the double shot 2 because I want to be able to use both on the trail…as in if I want to ride with my flat shoes or on a backyard trail or clip less at the local bike park.

The DS 3 probably addresses most of the issues you had with these. Adjustable grubs for grip and better materials overall

what pedals do you recommend? I am an older rider, kind of new to single track, love my clipless road pedals but trying to feel comfortable being clipped in for single track.

I would go with shimano spd with the multi release cleats. I found them to be the easiest to get in and out of

absolute most comfortable pedal and cleat setup but axles are very brittle. Strong riders beware.
