The guitar at 5:07 is the "Austral Guitar" model by my brother Diego Vila. He's a great luthier. That guitar will stay at Walt Grace Vintage, in Miami, Florida until it finds a definitive home. I'm glad you liked it! I actually love that model, and think it’s one of the best he's done.

Not a fan at all of that kinda reverse Thunderbird style. That price tag is quite high. Bullshit I have 2 LP Style guitars both with the same set of pickups, same string gauge and brand in them but one is a mahogany body with maple top, Mahogany neck and the other a fully alder body and neck (both neck through construction as well) And the Difference in TONE is night and day, Do an A/B test like this yourself and you can't miss it (Unless your DEAF)
@Speedojesus
@Speedojesus 6 жыл бұрын
Carl McLean Except there are plenty of A/B b;ind tests out there, and most show that woods have a very small, if not negligible effect on the actual tone. Most of it's just complete placebo. You also have the fact that different trees are different ages, different compositions, grew differently, have a different grain. All of that. If you were to be correct, two Mahogany and Maple cap Les Pauls, or two basswood Ibanez guitars should sound different to each other as well. Which brings me to woods like basswood. What's supposed to be the absolute worst tone-wood in the world is considered by people like Steve Vai the best. Showing that even with the same wood there's no actual conclusions on what it does. I'd honestly have more faith in tone-fret metal than tone-wood. And are you sure you're not letting on more than what you're saying? What are the other differences between these guitars? What years are they from?

There is a german publication (I believe currently being translated to english) by german professor Manfred Zollner, that describes in great scientific detail (1300 pages) how sound on an electric guitar works. Every minute detail has been lab tested and the result is: On an electric guitar, the wood has *zero* influence on the tone. The book is called "Die Physik der Elektrogitarre" and you can read it for free online. There is even a quite from Ulrich Teuffel himself (the guy who built the birdfish) in there stating that the influence of the wood is greatly overestimated.

... as an owner of a Teuffel BirdFish: like many other boutique guitars its only after weeks or months that you get to the point where you really understand what and how you get real value out of the THING. It's not just by plucking around for 5 minutes that the revelation happens - like with the middle of the road gibson-fender-ibanez stuff. And the 5 to 10 times more expensive will definitely not improve your playing by itself - subtleties will emerge over time only - and depending on your approach - that's where the real value is brought back to you - beyond all design hype and luthier's craftmanship ... and - encountered more than once - a lot depends on the guitar - [effect chain] amp combination - some combinations are more bitchy and touchy than others ...

In regards to the guitar from the design assignment, some of you guys are misinterpreting the intent of good industrial design. I am a professional designer and I can assure you that aesthetics and mental model matter a lot to the quality of the function. It would require a learning curve for someone to appreciate playing on a scalloped or floating frets what they imagine to play. I don't appreciate the lack of the whole of the head-stock, and imagine something similar to the form of the base or even a customisable attachment in the desired form! Even the overall aesthetics achieved by the form are questionable by many cultural standards. Going literal about form following function is an abstract practice because words are relative in the context of their meanings.

That fish is strange, and cool given the engineering concept. I feel like you should be playing only shreddy intervals stuff. You should show up to a country sesh with that thing. LOL> One more thing for the internet to chew on. sounds like engineers may understand things such as cellular density in wood. Imagine that. I am sure you can understand that concept in human bodies/muscular/fat tissue.

That aluminium guitar was a good innovation with those moveable pickups, but I don't believe the tone wood tone bar bollocks for a second. 😆 I think the builder knew it too because he just so happened to change to a different pickup at the same time he changed the 'tone bar'.....of course it's going to change the sound, it's a different pickup ffs. Come on, please, don't take people for idiots. 😐
@RhettShull
@RhettShull 6 жыл бұрын
Jamie isn't the builder, he runs the showcase. And the tone wood thing certainly is not "bollocks" as the person who actually played the guitar in the video I can tell you changing out the wood made an immediate difference in tone and feel, and we actually switched the wood before changing the pickups. I edited that out of the video to keep the final version from being too long. Wood makes a huge difference in a guitars sound and feel.

Same ol shit. Stick a hefty price tag on it....therefore it must be unbeatable. Not necessarily. I mean these things are great to look at; and aesthetics are important. But as far as tonality goes, the sound does not stretch as far in proportion to the amount of input cost the further it goes. It's like saying if the doubling effect of HD television from 4k to 8K etc., carries on then that means the human eye will have no issue keeping up with it. True: Image rendering will get better but the human eye won't. Same with the human ear. You can put all the bells n whistles on a guitar you like but it's still a bloody guitar.

@aGabay

You should have kept that in the final video. You can't expect people to take it seriously when you do invalid comparisons like that. Therefore, I don't believe that the "Tone" bars make that much of a difference in the amplified sound. On body resonance and feel - of course it matters, but in the end of the day, what matters is what the audience/listener hears, and that is NOT tone wood.

Very cool show. There is no doubt that guitar playing is going to evolve quickly over the next 20 years or so. New materials, new manufacturing techniques, etc. Like so many other things where people are attached emotionally, I wonder how much it will change people's buying habits away from traditional guitars, both stylistically and material-wise. Having interchangeable rods and carbon fiber is awesome, but there is something about the sound and the resonance of a traditional wooden instrument, not to mention the familiar body shapes. Thanks for sharing!

The last one you showed really interested me, as i've long thought of a guitar that was built from a complete mold. I always thought it might be cool to carve a complete guitar, totally out of a solid block of wood, no bolts or glue joints etc. Or maybe genetically engineered wood that could be grown to a specific shape. Or maybe you just need a slab of Sequoia (never cut down a Sequoia.) 3. Thoughts on anything you played? Did anything have distinctly different feel to anything you have ever played?

Love the Birdfish.... but if I coud buy one of Ulrich's guitars it would be the Tesla. Mike Sankey from Ottawa Canada has some forward thinking ergonomic designs I wouldn't mind playing. Too bad there were no guitars built by Chris Forshage, particularly his Orion models.

super cool guitar! just thinking just how much the wood bars actually affect the sound. i mean, is just that bit of wood gonna change the resultant resonance that much? since im thinking the metal in the construction would be resonating as well so how much of those little bars are actually coming through?

I was really surprised that you didn't play that three pickup one that looked like a cross between a Deusenberg and a Novo.

This comment section is exactly why people judge guitarists and guitar based music. Everyone has their nose stuck up in the air, they think they know everything, and they think innovation is stupid. That the 60s and 70s is all that matters, and that classic guitars like the strat, tele, Les Paul, etc. are all we need. And that’s exactly why guitar based genres are dying. People would rather believe they’re right than accept that they’re wrong, and unfortunately everybody BELIEVES the best has already come and gone, rather than ACCEPT that we can do ANYTHING with music and guitars to forward our processes and defy genres that have already been created

Who is the maker of the carbon fiber guitar at the end?

Alright, so i get that the whole point of this (as described at the start) is to show cutting edge new designs by boutique designers rather than the run of the mill big company stuff like fenders, gibsons, and acoustic brands like martin (since a lot of boutique brands are focused on acoustics), but a lot of these brands still feel like they're stuck in that vintage feel. I don't particularly get what's innovative about taking some slight variation of maybe 5 traditional shapes and making them super expensive. Don't get me wrong either, I absolutely love vintage stuff (chasing vintage guitars is a good example, great brand) but I disagree when people say they're innovative. Brands like dingwall, aristides, strandberg are truly innovative, whether people who are vintage purists like it or not.

Tarkenton these designers are just making what they want to make in order to produce the type of music they like? All the brands you stated as being innovative are all guitars mainly used for metal or prog styles. I really think it’s as simple as that. People make what they want to make. Not a lot of boutique designer at this level concerned with chugga chugga riffs.

@@allstopblue5717 All of these brands are now being adapted more into other guitar playing styles but it was the technical metal guys that took it on first (apart maybe from the jazz guys). It's more of the adoption of extended range guitar across the guitar spectrum and not about the innovation of these brands per se. All I'm saying is if the only things that change about these "innovative" vintage style guitars is the wood choice and how aged they look, there's really not much reason to buy them. Just because tech metal players are the most obvious these days for having used innovative designs, it doesn't disparage how innovative it is. Hell the fusion guys used these designs before them, it just wasn't as obvious
