Kirby 64 was my first Kirby, so I'm excited to jump right back in. Funny thing is, because it was my first, I used to think "Why did they remove combining Copy abilities from later games?" until I realised that was exclusive to 64. Now I wish they'd bring it back.

The games's definitely slow and not that challenging, but I think what's there has just enough meat to give it backbone, while novelty of the abilities, and absurdly comfy music and visuals help carry it the rest of the way. As was stated, the game can be completed in only a few hours anyways, so by the time stuff does get old, you're at the end anyways. I do think it's worth the time it takes to get through it, and it cannot be overstated just how appealing the visuals and music is.

One of the things where it was challenging were the hidden crystals that could only be acquired if you had the correct combination of abilities to solve a puzzle and/or destroy a hidden block or wall. A lot of people would ignore them thinking it was just an out of place asset when in reality it was destructible all along. When I was a kid I had to resort to Nintendo magazines that gave tips and walkthroughs because I couldn't complete the game at 100% in the first try.

I'm quite nostalgic for this one, but I have similar thoughts about it. The pace is a bit too slow, and while mixing abilities were really fun, they mostly get boring fast. I never understood why they ditched the full-on moveset abilities introduced in Super Star for such a long time after that game came out. This game is pretty similar in many ways to Dream Land 3, as they are both slower paced, have some sort of mixing gimmick with tons of variations (but with the abilities getting dull quickly with their single attacks), encouraging replaying most of the levels to get all the collectibles, and even the sountracks have a similar feel for the most part. The thing I like in Dream Land 3 more is that it has multiplayer. The most common way of replaying Kirby games nowadays is in co-op with my wife, and while we have played through KDL3 a few times, we can't do that with 64.
@MajoraZ2 жыл бұрын
I'd guess they abandoned the full movesets because most enemies die in one hit anyways, so they're mostly unnecessary. I always felt it was overkill there and in the Return to Dreamland games, i'd rather each ability only having a few moves each and trhen focus on more abilities in total or power mixing.

Eh, I would say that despite it being my first mainline platformer in the series since the early 2000s, Kirby 64 is the type of game that has its "ups and downs", in my opinion. On one hand, the soundtrack kicks and the cut scenes are quite charming on their own, as well as the multiplayer mode being quite the boomer (with Checkerboard Chase, especially, being the most fun). I'd go as far and say that I enjoyed the multiplayer portion more than the single player portion (though speaking of...) On the flipside, the Power Combos system is completely broken and unbalanced (you can get the Bomb + Cutter power combo in the very first stage of the game and you've pretty much beaten the game from there on), and while I get that the easy difficulty is the series' selling point, Kirby 64 is one of those few instances where I felt like the game wasn't even trying to challenge me (yes, I played Star Allies, which was pretty much on so in the main campaign, but the complete opposite in the side content) and even with those instance where I died, it was either due to sheer boredom or just things that came out of nowhere. There are other problems I had with it, but at the very least Kirby 64 isn't Bubsy... Overall, I can't say that I had a bad time with this game, but I can't say I had a good time either...but I only replayed it on my Wii via Kirby's Dream Collection: Special Edition back in 2012, so hopefully once this game lands on NSO+EP, my feelings for Kirby 64 will improve then because (once again) it's my first Kirby platformer in my lifetime.

I think the review is fair. Kirby 64 has the benefit of the legacy it has as the first 3D Kirby game as in 3D rendered. It's slow but I think it's quite approachable for people who don't play many games, at least making it through regular ending. I recommend using a guide to complete it though. Mainly because like Andre said, the game is bad at telling the player when and where a certain copy ability is required. A lot are just blocks colored as the copy ability that's needed, and others are obtuse drawings that aren't completely clear at first glance. Overall, as part of the service is a nice addition, not all N64 games were standouts. Some just added a bit of variety to the mix.

I still wouldn't call it the first Kirby 3D game...usually 3D is applied to the gameplay, not backgrounds, so it should be here as well. "Forgotten Land" IS the very first 3D Kirby game, 64 is a 2D game with just 3D backgrounds.

I really wish they would use this ability combine mechabic again like they did here. I can see it being utilized really well in modern gaming.

Loved Kirby 64 as a kid. I find it has aged fairly well. The copy ability mixing was fun and unique to the series and the game just oozes charm throughout its presentation with adorable character models, phenomenal soundtrack and colorful environments. And the cutscenes are some of the most amazingly animated on N64! While not my favorite game in the series, I still consider Kirby 64 to be an absolute must-play.
